Chapter 4:
Flowers at the end of summer
The afternoon sun was slowly beginning to descend, tinting the sky orange and pink. The warm light of the last rays reflected off the leaves of the trees in the nearby forest, creating a perfect contrast to the calm surrounding the small coastal village. Ren walked along the path that bordered the beach, the sound of the waves gently crashing against the shore like a comforting melody.
It was a quiet afternoon, but he couldn't escape the sense of unease that had accompanied him since his last conversation with Aria. The words she had said kept echoing in her mind. He knew there was something more between them, something neither of them dared to fully explore.
Was it fear that was holding them back?
Ren stopped in the middle of the path, staring at the horizon, trying to collect his thoughts. He wasn't sure exactly how he felt about Aria. Something more than a friendship, something deeper. But how could he make sense of that when everything in his life had been so calculated, so predictable?
At that moment, Aria's familiar figure appeared in front of him, walking towards him with a firm step. His presence always managed to bring with it a mixture of comfort and confusion. When their eyes met, Ren felt that spark in the air, that palpable tension that surrounded them every time they were together.
Aria stopped in front of him, her gaze was soft, but there was something about her that Ren couldn't fully comprehend. Maybe a mixture of hope and caution, as if she was waiting for him to say something, to take a step towards her.
"I was looking for you." Aria said, her voice calm, but with a tinge of curiosity.
Ren didn't know what to say at first. The silence that was established between them seemed loaded with something unsaid. Something that floated in the air like an undercurrent.
"I was thinking of you, too. Ren replied, finally. I couldn't lie. The truth was that I couldn't stop thinking about her, about what that connection meant.
Aria stared at him, with a slight smile that couldn't hide the tension between them. It was as if they both knew something was about to change, but neither of them was sure how to approach it.
"You know?" Aria began, walking slowly towards the seashore. — Sometimes, I feel like there's something in me that I want to show you, but I don't know how. Something that I can't explain in words, but that I want to tell you.
Ren watched her in silence. He knew that what Aria was saying was important, but something inside him was preventing him from opening up completely. There was an invisible barrier separating them, one that neither of them seemed willing to completely break.
"You can tell me anything, Aria." Ren said, finally, approaching her. "I trust you."
That simple statement seemed to surprise Aria, who stared at him intently for a moment before looking away at the sea. For a few seconds, the sound of the waves was the only thing that filled the space between them.
"I trust you too, Ren. Aria replied quietly. "It's just... There are things about me that even I don't understand, and I don't want you to think that I am... rare.
Ren frowned, feeling an urgent need to get closer to her, to break down the barrier that kept her at a distance he didn't want. At that moment, he wished he could tell him everything he felt, everything he had been hiding.
- No one is weird, Aria. We all have our doubts and our shadows. The important thing is that we can face them together. Ren said, his words filled with a sincerity that even he did not expect. But he knew he had to tell her, that he had to open up to her somehow.
Aria looked at him again, and for a moment, her eyes met his, as if time had stopped at that instant. Everything between them, everything unsaid, seemed to finally begin to take shape.
- So, would you let me tell you what I keep? Aria asked, with a tone that conveyed a vulnerability she had never shown before.
Ren nodded slowly, speechless. I didn't need to say anything else. I knew this moment was important. He knew that what Aria wanted to share was a significant step in their relationship, and he didn't want to interrupt it.
Aria closed her eyes, taking a deep breath before speaking, as if she was collecting her deepest thoughts.
— Since I was a child I have been afraid of what people think of me. He began. — I have always been the girl who has to be strong, the one who cannot show weakness, the one who has to give everything to be accepted. And I've been losing myself in the process. Aria stopped, her hands trembling slightly. — I've been looking everywhere for an answer, something that will help me understand myself, but I think what I need... it is trusting someone.
Ren felt a knot in his stomach. Aria's words resonated with something deep within him. I knew what it was like to be afraid of not being enough, of not being understood. And in that moment, he understood more than ever what Aria needed.
"You need to know that you're not alone, Aria. Ren said, taking a step closer to her. "And no matter what has happened to you, I am here. I will always be here.
Aria looked up, and her eyes flashed with an emotion Ren couldn't describe. And then, something in the air changed. The distance between them disappeared, and without thinking, Ren hugged her. A hug full of comfort, understanding and, above all, acceptance.
Aria did not turn away. Instead, she clung to it with the same need Ren felt in her chest. It was a silent embrace, but so deep that it seemed that everything they had kept until that moment was fading away.
The sun had already completely disappeared, and night was beginning to cover the sky.
Ren and Aria remained in each other's arms, in no hurry to separate. They had taken the first step toward something new, something that even they didn't know exactly how to define, but that they both knew had begun at that moment.
Ren was no longer afraid. And Aria, for the first time in a long time, felt free.
