Chapter 24:
What The Master Calls A Butterfly
November 3, 2652 – 360 Days Before Judgment Day
Three days have passed since the culling took place and life had returned to Columbus Server in a manner very similar to the life it had before the week and a half prior. In the end, the Crafting Guild re-instituted repair services and started producing weapons again, and most complaints against them were simply forgotten, swept away like it had never occurred. One thing that did change though was the Hunter’s Association decided to do some vertical integration of their own and began to developing their own crafting division to prevent over reliance on the Crafting Guild. It will take time for any real competition to occur and there’s no telling if another cartel will form but as of now, the two giants were in competition.
Virgil died and Aaron became an administrator and like his predecessor before him, has chosen to hide that fact and keep it to himself. When Lucius and Riley woke up the day after they thought they were supposed to be dead, they hounded Aaron, who explained that Virgil must’ve sponsored the two of them as a back-up plan, just in case they didn’t make it through Mt. Inferno. Aaron explained that their survival must’ve been Virgil’s last great act and the two believed him.
The amount of hate and discrimination against the C-rankers remained but it wasn’t as obvious as it once was. After all, a bleeding and compassionate heart lies within the chest of every liberal, and who wouldn’t take advantage of their understanding?
Amongst many others, Dante and Millie died. When Beatrice found out, she was beside herself in grief as she was certain that Dante would survive based off of the September 30th rankings. However, many A-rankers and above had also sponsored other players, which affected the actual end result. Beatrice was upset that Dante died, but she didn’t blame Riley for being alive. That didn’t mean that Beatrice was okay though as she quietly cloistered herself away in her lonely coffee shop.
Stacy changed her appearance back to her default settings and left Chad’s side.
Yes, people died and it was sad but ultimately life just continued on, just as it had, and just as it surely will – right up until the point it doesn’t.
The End.
