One way or another, nature always wins.

After having lost dominion over the Earth due to self-inflicted climate change, the remnants of humanity descended into massive underground complexes called arcologies to avoid the wrath of nature. The idea was to wait out the clock until the Earth was no longer pissed but the extent of the damage was so great that the surface would remain uninhabitable until a thousand generations or more. That's a long time to spend inside a hole. And so, to pass the time, the overwhelming majority of humanity opted to escape from this grim reality and enter a virtual one instead.
