Chapter 3:

"What Creativity Could Be"

Mei To Emi

“What creativity could be”

The world was still beautiful, even today. Birds flocked through the sky, squirrels ran around listlessly, and people sat down on the cool grass, having picnics and enjoying time with their families.

This sight in front of me told me that summer had arrived.

Standing was getting tiring, so I finally decided to sit down on the hard floor. Why not the bench today, you may ask? Well… I don’t know? It was summer, so why not do something new for a change?

I was sitting on the edge of the canal. To be honest, the ground was a lot rougher than I thought it’d be. Ahh, my butt hurts, but SUMMER! I thought.

My legs hovered over the canal floor, swinging back and forth without a care in the world. For something attached to me, we couldn’t be more different.

Having found a seat, I reached into my bookbag and pulled out my enjoyment for today. A book titled“What Creativity Could Be” by Matsuri Matsurin.

Before I even opened the book, something about the name Matsuri Matsurin struck a chord within me. It was a cacophony. Not at all your typical name in any region of the world.

When I opened the book, the first paragraph was highlighted. It wasn’t official highlighting, though. The person I borrowed it from put emphasis on it. It read:

“ ‘Why write? Why strive? Why be passionate?’ is something I was asked before at one of my conventions. My answer was because of the idea of what creativity could be. That dormant potential. That unharvested, lingering potential for what we as people could achieve. That’s the driving motivation within all of us.”

That first paragraph hooked me, and by the time I looked up, the moon was out and the animals–the families, they were no more. All that surrounded me was darkness.

I stood up, then placed the book back into my bag and began walking home. On the way back, the final sentence of the book echoed throughout my mind.

It wasn’t anything fancy. Hell, it wasn’t even anything outstanding. It said, or rather, simply asked:
