Chapter 2:
Better Than Nothing
I wake up from the unfamiliar bed as a voice that wasn't from anyone I knew called me.
"Wake up, dearie. The sun has risen." The inn keeper said as I groggily open my eyes.
There wasn't much I could think about except for the fact that this isn't my home. There's no mom and dad. No sibling to frustrate you. Whelp. Less anger, less feeling like sh*t and meaningless. I brushed my teeth with was I was provided. I changed into the dress that I was given. I went downstairs and saw the inn lady making breakfast.
"Well, aren't you pretty? You look much more like a girl with a dress. I bet you could look even prettier with a smile. Could you get me the plates from the cupboard?" The lady asked.
I reached for the cupboard for the plates.
"How many?" I asked.
"Two will do."
I placed the plates down as she lays two sunny-side-ups and some bacon on each of them. Then she put a portion of salad on each of them and sliced a slice of bread for each.
"Done. There's also a fruit bowl on the counter. Help yourself if you want anything."
"Thanks." I said gratefully and started digging in breakfast with her.
I don't know how early it was, but probably earlier than most working people. The roads were still empty outside. After I was done with breakfast, the other tenants were waking up and other customers came in for breakfast.
"Could you wash the dishes for me while I take care of the customers?" She asked as I nodded.
I wash the dishes. Although not skillfully, I did my best for them to be clean and not to waste too much water. The inn had quite the customers. I see people with swords and staffs. Probably passing adventurers. Villagers and traveling merchants. Could I be one of those, one day? Magic is impossible unless you can do that by reading a book grimoire or using a magic artifact. That's my guess, at least. I guess I should settle for a job for now. I hope I don't get scammed with pricing. I'm not ready to do business yet, I get being employed should be enough until I learn more about business. But what can I do?
"Dearie, could you bring me a bag of flour from the pantry? It's right there." The inn lady asked.
"Okay." I went to the pantry and carried the bag of flour back to the kitchen.
"Thank you. By the way, I haven't given you my name. My name is Miriam. What's yours?" She asked.
Will it do if I told her to call me by my username? I'm not ready to be known by my real name in this world. It's very unlikely but what if I became famous or something? I don't want assassins of people coming after me by recognizing my name. Or that I get a very very bad reputation and they're going to execute me for it! But then, I don't want a bad reputation on a name I like either. Maybe I should introduce myself with different names depending on how much I trust the people.
"Please, call me Blob." I said.
"Blob? What an unusual name. Well, anyways. The village chief came by and told me to bring you these." She handed me the envelope.
Thank gosh she shrugged it off!
"Thank you." I opened it and read its content.
Several places were seeking to employ someone. A map came along with it. This is a bit too good to be true. They being so nice to me. I'm afraid that I might take them for granted and not be able to thank them. Or even forget that they exist once I leave this place. That is if I wanted to leave. But honestly, I don't plan to stay here forever. If I'm going to be forced to be independent anyway, I might as well create my ideal lifestyle in the ideal home, and live with my future husband- That last part was a joke. I! WILL NOT! BE IN A RELATIONSHIP UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE! I know that it's not all about kisses and bed time but knowing that those things are possible makes me want to avoid it either way. I mean sure, you'd only want to do those with the person you love. But I don't want to be with anyone IRL, not even in this fantasy world. My heart belongs to only Ja*** ***er. That is, if I can manage to not change the focus of my current crush. Either I'm those kind of anime girls that always infatuate over handsome guys, or I'm just not truly in love yet. What? I'm inexperienced. I dunno nothing!
Anyways, let's see the job descriptions. Janitorial work, farm work, apothecary assistance, and waiting staff.
I should probably consider something that could earn me Exp. Wait, how do I earn Exps? Oh, Competences and Skill. Why is it empty? Even the skills are trees. What? Are they like Sims competence? So, I have to unlock them before being able to view them? What a botheeer. And there more point usage mechanic in the skill tree. I'm guessing that I will need points to unlock skills? What are they? Passive, aggressive-? I mean, passive and active? I guess I'll see when I'll see.
So, what was I talking about? Uuuuuh... money. And... Exp? And since there's Competence, I am guessing that doing certain things earn Competence. And how much effort I am willing to put in it. Yeah.
Apothecary Assistance :
15C(oins), 6h/day (Saturday, Sunday)
Start: 9h, Break: 12h-13h, Finish: 16h
Competence : Apothecary (probably?)
Con : If have to make medicine, brain prob toast
Waiting Staff :
12C, 8h/day (Monday, Friday)
Start: 8h, B: 12h-13h, F: 17h
Competence : Customer Service? (I dunnooooo...)
Con : Prob social interaction. nooooo...
Farm Work :
10C, 7h/day (F, S, S, M, T)
S: 8h, B: 12h-13h, F: 16h
Competence : Mostly Ranching or something, maybe farming? I dunno, do they do farm field work?
Con : Stinky, could get hurt, will get dirty and sweaty, lots of heavy lifting, sore muscle
Janitorial Work :
8C, 10h/day (M, T, W, T, F)
S: 10h, B: 12h-13h, F: 21h
Competence : Cleaning (hopefully...)
Con : I don't know how to clean. Standing in the middle of an empty or busy room cleaning is so awkward. nooooo...
I guess that should do it. They're all around reasonable hours. Although, the most paid job has less hours and the least paid job has more hours. Is that logical? Maybe. I mean, comparing the guy who sweep your floor, and the dude who makes medicine that cure people, who makes more money? Wait, that's not even the point! Those are not the employer, although, for the apothecary, I would be assisting. I hope I won't be asked to do anything too difficult. Because I'm leaning to take that job. You know?
- Less hours.
- And even if I don't do the direct medicine making, watching could teach stuff.
- I could try and ask some questions if the employer is willing to answer me.
- And! More money!
Yeah, sorry. But I think between assisting someone, working alone, doing a lot of heavy work, and social-required work, I prefer assisting someone. That is, if the job is how I imagine it to be. Oh, well. We'll see if they are willing to accept me first. Well, maybe let's see the places first. Maybe get to know the people first then make further decision?
"Are you going out for a walk in the village? I would love to give you a tour but I'm quite busy with work right now. While you're at it, could you bring this order to the bar at the coast?" Miriam said as I nodded.
She pointed me the location of the inn then the bar before I headed out. Hm... Should I really go out on my own? But is there even anyone that I know that is close enough to show me around? None. I HAVE NO FRIENDS! WAAAAAHHH—! All right. Enough drama and more doing something. Doing nothing in that free room would only make me feel more guilty and like trash so yeah. Might as well get to know places or people before getting lost when something happens.
SPEAKING of WITCH- No! No! "Which"! Speaking of which! If this is a fantastic world, shouldn't I prepare in weapon, armor, and etc?! Healing herbs. But, ugh... I don't have money to afford all that. I should probably settle with basic needs first. Lay low in settlement, first. Then leave the borders only when I am prepared.
I started walking with the order still in my hand. It looks like the lady is ordering a bunch of alcomohol from the bar. I guess it's a bar that also sell booze other than serving them. I guess imma head there first. It's kinda my responsibility now that I accepted to bring the order for her. Imagine it was a quest, it would be so satisfying to receive a reward for doing the simplest things. Whelp, this isn't a game, enough "imagining".
I walk pass a clothing store and look at the dresses through the window display. They're all medieval clothes. I like old and vintage stuff, but I would have still preferred them to be a bit more modern. Maybe the rich people clothes will look better. I would have still preferred a plain white T-shirt, though. Or at least, cottage core dresses. I sure find plain stuff more comfortable but in the matter of aesthetic, I love old, vintage, retro dresses. I'm not sure which exactly fit what category but I know it ain't the modern ones, at least. Or simple ones? Eh.
Can I even wear dresses with armor? Am I gonna become an adventurer? No. Nooooo. I just don't want to get hurt. Maybe if I'm lucky, I could find magical stuff that could protect me from harm. And if I could use magic, it would be protection magic. And healing magic. I could also heal people. And if I could make potions, I could sell healing potions! And whatever that is I could sell. I dunno. I'll have to do some business thinking when I'll have time. That way, I could earn money in a more fulfilling way than being working during hours that I cannot control. It's this kind of world, right? They have magic and potions, right? It has to be! I did see a mage or something earlier! They had a staff!
So far, this place seem to have normal things. I haven't come across beasts of any sort. They seems to have normal fruits and vegetation. Which is good. Unique stuff are cool. But I still want to eat my comfort normal food like broccolis and rice.
You know, about the jobs. I should also think about the possibility that other people might apply as well. I can't always get what I want when I want. I should also probably try to remember the routes rather than jumping from thoughts to thoughts. Are there just private houses here or? It's not like they're tall building or anything. They're just cottage houses. I guess that's why they have a village chief and not a mayor. I don't really know the explicit differences except for the size and who mainly is in charge. Should I even remember the pattern of this village? I mean, I'm not gonna stay long, right? RIGHT?! Meh. I'm probably going to have to stay here 50 years till I get a stable life to move out on my own. Yes, I am totally exaggerating. Wait! I can just write on my map! Stupid! First is the inn, then the bar. *scribble scribble scribble*
Well, that's one thing sorted out. Let's just go to the bar.
