Chapter 9:

the beginning of the camping trip and the start of Misaki's fear:

Trapped Between Two Worlds"

Kaito: I'm heading to Rin's house now for study purposes. I don't really need it, but it’ll help keep those bullies away. I’ll keep doing this until I find out what those bullies did that day.

Misaki: So you’ve decided to stop running away?

Kaito: I was the one who suggested studying.

Misaki: Yeah, to try to get your dead brain working again.

Kaito: Can we please stop talking about this?

Rin (in front of her house): Misaki, Kaito, you're late.

Misaki: That's because his feet work just as well as his brain.

Kaito: If that’s true, then try speeding up to walk beside me instead of slowing both your brain and your feet.

Misaki: I just wanted to see how far a slow brain could go.

Kaito: Then welcome to the club.

Rin: Let’s stop now—we’ve got a study session.

Rin’s Mom: I brought cake to help you focus.

Kaito: Thank you.

Misaki: Thanks, it's delicious.

Rin: Yeah, my mom makes the best cakes.

Misaki: She really does.

Rin: Next time, we’ll have cake at your place, Misaki.

Misaki: Okay, but I helped make this cake, so I hope mine is as good as your mom’s.

Kaito: Don’t you live with your mom?

Misaki: I live alone. My mom has after-school commitments, and my dad works at his company and only visits during holidays.

Rin: Wait, your dad’s a businessman? That’s awesome.

Misaki: You think so?

Kaito: I’m sure your mom has at least one day off. Let’s visit her then.

(Kaito thinking: Even though I don’t want to...)

Misaki: My mom used to be a teacher for my sake, but now she has family responsibilities, so she comes home late every day.

Rin: Then we’ll try Misaki’s cake next time.

Misaki: Alright, let’s focus on studying now.

---

After the study session

Kaito: Finally, we’re done.

Misaki: I doubt your brain retained a single thing.

Rin: Yep.

Kaito: Have mercy...

(Kaito and Rin leaving Rin’s house)

Kaito: Studying was hard, but with you two, you saved me. So, how about another study session?

Misaki: I already made plans with Rin, so don’t drag me into it.

Kaito: Please, even for a short time after school?

Misaki: I study during lunch. If you want to come, I don’t mind.

Kaito: What about Rin?

Misaki: Of course she studies with me. Do you think we're like you?

Kaito: I think you’re heading this way, so… goodbye.

Misaki: Wait—I've never told you where my house is. How do you know?

(Kaito thinking: I slipped up. Should I have said that?)

Misaki: Stalker.

Kaito: Oh no…

(Kaito thinking: The bullies didn’t show up again today. I don’t know what they’re planning, but I hope they got scared and backed off.)

---

At Misaki’s house

One of the bullies: Ugh, I need to find something about that story.

(Flashback)

Bully: Are you sure that guy knows something about that girl?

Friend: Yes, he was with Misaki since elementary school. I used to mess with him until he saw a picture of a girl, got terrified, and said her name.

Bully: So he does know something about her.

Friend: Yes, and that information will help us get revenge. Now, tell us what you know about the girl.

Boy (nervous): All I know is that her name is Misaki, and she was in my class in elementary school. That’s all.

Bully: Listen, I didn’t bring you here to hear your life story. Either tell us something useful, or we’ll deal with you right here.

Boy (terrified): I-I remembered! She had a close friend back in elementary school, but that girl had an accident. I heard Misaki gets scared every time she sees her friend's picture, so her parents hid the photo from her.

Bully: Interesting… and where is that picture?

Boy: I don’t know.

Bully: What do you mean you don’t know?!

Boy: Maybe in her house?

Bully: And where’s her house?

---

Back at Misaki’s house

Bullies: Ugh, we still haven’t found that photo. Where should we search?

One of the bullies: I don’t know. But since we’re here, why not check her closet?

Bullies: Haha, you’re such a pervert…

---

Door opens

Misaki: I’m home… Why is the place dark and messy? Mom, are you back?

---

Bullies running away: That was close! Good thing we left someone to keep watch.

One of them: But what about the picture?

Friend: Don’t worry, we’ll find it next time.

Misaki (at home): Maybe Mom came to grab something and forgot to clean up.

---

The next day

Park: Kaito, I’m so jealous. You’re studying with the two prettiest girls in school! You’re gonna ace this year!

Kaito: Yeah, I’m sure.

Park: Stop bragging.

Kaito: Isn’t today the camping trip?

Park: Yeah! We’re going for two nights in the wild. I’m excited, but my dear phone won’t have Wi-Fi, which is sad.

Kaito: You’ll get smarter.

Park: Say that to yourself. But this time we’ll be together at camp—I'm excited.

Kaito: Yeah.

Teacher (gathering students): Alright, line up and get on the bus. We're heading to the campsite. Make sure you bring your stuff.

Students: Okay!

---

Whispers on the bus

Rin: I’m so excited for the camping trip—especially since we’re all together.

Misaki: Yeah, but one day with Kaito is enough. Two days is too much.

Rin: True, but you’re the one always arguing with him.

Misaki: You call that arguing?

Rin: Yeah, and I’m the spectator—just missing popcorn during your fights.

(Misaki hits Rin’s shoulder)

Rin (smiling): Am I wrong?

Misaki: Let’s just focus on today’s activities.

Rin: The teacher said we get to choose activities on the first day, but the second day is mandatory.

Misaki: I hope my mom doesn’t push too many things on us.

Rin: No use hoping—you know your mom.

Misaki: True…

---

Getting off the bus

Park: Is there another bus besides ours?

Kaito: Looks like it. But for who?

Teacher: It’s from Shobu School. They’ll be your camping partners.

Misaki: That’s bad.

Rin: Why?

Misaki: My mom and the teacher from Shobu are friends—and rivals too.

Rin: How bad?

Misaki: The worst kind.

Shobu student: So you’re the ones we’re camping with. Hi, I’m Dory, first year. Let’s get along!

Kaito: I’m Kaito, also first year. Nice to meet you.

Park: I’m Park, also first year.

Dory: Nice to meet you all! Since today’s free, how about we do some activities?

Kaito: Maybe after we finish setting up the tents?

Dory: No worries—I’ll call my friends. We’ll finish quickly.

Rin: Looks like the boys are already bonding.

Shobu girl: Hope we get along too!

Rin (startled): Ah! You scared me! Aren’t you supposed to introduce yourself first?

Eri: Sorry, that’s just how I am. I love to joke and can’t resist any chance.

Misaki: Clearly.

Eri: You’re Misaki, right?

Misaki: You know me?

Eri: Let’s say… kind of. Shall we shake hands?

Misaki: Nice to meet you.

...Click...

Misaki (panicked): AHH! Take it away! Take it away!

Eri: Haha! Don’t worry—it’s just a toy spider!

So even calm girls can act like this, huh?

Misaki: You haven’t seen anything yet.

Rin: Calm down, Misaki—she was joking.

Voice from behind: Eri, there you are. We were looking for you.

Eri: Sorry, I couldn’t resist greeting our camping friends.

Bori: Looks like Eri pulled another prank. I’m Bori, nice to meet you all.

Yuan: Hey, I’m Yuan. Nice to meet you too.

Rin: I’m Rin, and this is Misaki. Sorry—she’s still shaken from the prank.

Yuan: We get it. Once, Eri put a fake snake next to me in bed. I nearly had a heart attack.

Misaki: Where are the teachers? Aren’t they supposed to be here?

Yuan: They’re discussing tomorrow’s games now.

Misaki’s Mom: Hello, Sasha! I haven’t seen you since our last school competition.

Sasha: Hey, Ji-yun! Long time no see. Let’s make this a great camping trip.

Ji-yun: Yes, let’s make sure the games tomorrow are fun for the students.

Sasha: Agreed. Winning doesn’t matter as long as everyone has fun.

---

Back to Kaito and friends

Kaito: Thanks, everyone! We finished quickly thanks to you!

Dory: We’re glad to help. By the way, this is Jon, and this is Minto.

Park: Nice to meet you. I’m Park, and this is Kaito.

Minto: Alright, let’s start enjoying camp! What do you want to do first?

Jon: I say let’s go to the lake for fresh air and clear water.

Dory: You just want to watch the girls.

Jon: What’s wrong with admiring girls? It’s a noble man’s pleasure—and a feast for the eyes!

Dory: He’s at it again…

Kaito: I guess guys like him exist in every timeline.

Park: Let’s just go.

---

At the lake

Girls playing

Jon: Look at paradise!

Minto: Come on, guys—let’s have fun too!

Girls: Ugh, the boys are here too.

Rin: Don’t worry. If they try anything, they don’t know Misaki.

Bori: Are they afraid of her?

Rin: Something like that. She practices martial arts.

Eri: Cool! But the boys look decent. Let’s get to know them. Hey, boys!

Kaito: Is she calling us?

Jon: I don’t want to go.

Minto: Don’t you like girls?

Jon: Yeah, but not Eri…

Kaito: She doesn’t seem bad.

Eri: I’m not bad!

Kaito: Whoa! You scared me!

Eri: Sorry, I’m Eri. Nice to meet you.

Kaito: I’m K-Kaito—AAH!

Park: Why is your hair standing like that?

Dory: Because Eri zapped him with a shock device.

Eri: Haha! His reaction was hilarious—I loved it!

Rin: Haha! Sorry—I can’t stop laughing. Misaki’s laughing too!

Dory: Alright, boys—let’s declare war! Splash them!

Jon: No! Their angelic clothes!

Misaki: I can’t take what he said…

Park: Neither can we. But for Kaito…

All boys: For Kaito!

Yuan: We better run!

Rin: Yeah! Ahh!

---

We had fun playing in the lake, fishing, and chatting until nightfall.

I saw Rin sitting alone, staring at the stars.

Kaito: Nice weather tonight.

Rin: Oh, Kaito—come sit.

(Kaito sits a bit away)

Kaito: So… are you gazing at the stars or thinking?

Rin: Thinking about my family.

Kaito: What about them?

Rin: Being away from them makes me feel lonely, even though I’m usually around them.

Kaito: Being away from family is hard, but you’ve got friends.

Rin: Actually, just girlfriends… and one stalker.

Kaito: What?

Rin: You keep following me, even to camp. You followed me to the lake too.

Kaito: Not my fault! I wanted to see it too.

Rin: And a pervert.

Kaito: Please stop…

Rin: Beg more.

Kaito: Not happening.

Rin (loudly): Pervert!

Kaito: Okay, okay! Please, please!

Rin (laughing): Yes, keep going!

Kaito: Stop, please!

---

In front of Misaki’s house

One of the bullies: So, no one’s watching, huh?

(Calling)

Bully: Hey, the house is empty.

Friend: Looks like luck’s on our side
