Katherine watched with a soft smile as Xander kept an eye on Mila and Felix. He seemed gentle, calm, nothing like his arrogant and flirtious attitude earlier. Katherine, Max, and Ivy hung back, watching from a distance, this was Xander, Mila, and Felix's time.
That's when Felix woke up. "Ugh...Hey guys.~" He says, his voice soft and raspy. "Did we make it?" He asked, Mila was crying tears of happiness, she tossed her arms around Felix, hugging him tight. "Yeah, we made it Felix...We made it..." She said softly, her voice choaking up. Katherine walked up to them, she was going to apologize to Felix. "Hey Felix." Katherine said softly. "Hey Katherine, sorry for you guys having to haul my ass..." He says, his voice soft. "No, I should be apologizing, I should have been nicer." She said, giving him a gentle smile. "To all of you." She continued, looking at Xander and Mila too. "I thought you weren't trustworthy, and I apologize." She said, giving them a soft bow. Xander let his tail wrap around her's. "It's okay Katherine. He's alive, that's what matters." Xander said, giving her a soft smile.
She blushed lightly at the gesture. "And I won't forget how you helped keep us all calm when Felix got hurt, and how you let us stop often so Mila could patch up Felix's scratches from your fight." He paused, taking a step closer to Katherine. "You're a good person Katherine, don't ever forget that." He said softly. She returned his smile, a sparkle in her eyes as she gazed into his. His hazel eyes shimmered with unshed tears, that he somehow held back. Katherine couldn't look him in the eye, she felt guilty, like somehow it was her fault, for not noticing the trap, or not sensing the danger. Xander gave Felix and Mila a look, walking with Katherine out of the room. "Hey, this isn't your fault. Seriously. None of us blame you." He said softly, a sincere look in his eyes.
That's when Katherine fell apart, the tears finally falling. It wasn't just Felix, it was a collection of things that had been building up for years. "I should've hung back with everyone else, instead of running ahead..." She said, looking up at Xander with tears running down her face. He brushed them away softly. "No. It isn't your fault. At all. Got it?" He said in a quiet voice, gazing into her eyes, his hand rested on her cheek. She felt a blush spread across her face as she met his gaze. "You're annoying as hell, y'know that?" Katherine said, then she kissed him. They stayed like that for a moment, then Xander leaned back, his face red as a beet, he hadn't expected that.
"What...W-" He stuttered, unable to comprehend. "I could see the way you care for Felix and Mila...We're not as different as I thought...And I regret not giving you a shot, no matter how much you annoy me." She said softly, giving him a soft smile, then a punch in the arm. He grinned back, letting his tail intertwine with her's gently. "That means alot Katherine." He said with a quiet chuckle. "Don't mention it, but if this is gonna work out, we can't keep things from each other." She said, her voice soft, she wasn't used to being vunerable with anyone.
Not even Max and Ivy knew why she came with them, they wanted a better life, she wanted to join the PETA Protection Force. "Okay, deal." Xander said, holding out his hand. Katherine shook it, flashing him a smile. "So, why did you want to come to the city?" Xander asked after drying the rest of the tears from Katherine's face. "I wanna join the PETAPF. You?" She replied, gazing into his eyes. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you." He said with a smile. She raised an eyebrow. "That's what I was coming for too." He said, laughing lightly. She chuckled softly. "See, we aren't so different." She said softly, nudging him in the arm. He gave her another smile. "I guess not." He said, returning the nudge. Katherine could feel the tension in her shoulders dissipate.
They sat there smiling for a moment, before Max walked out of the room. "Hey Xander...Felix wants you." He said, Xander gave Max a nod, taking Katherine's hand and giving it a soft squeeze before heading back into the room. "What was that about Katherine?" Max asked softly. "I think...I think I'm gonna give Xander a chance..." She said, her voice equally low. Max nodded, giving Katherine a gentle hug. "If you want to, I'll support you." He said with a smile.
It wasn't long before Felix was discharged, he apparently had medicare so they paid for his visit, and soon Felix, Mila, Xander, Katherine, Ivy, and Max were walking down the street, chattering like they were the best of friends. The more Katherine talked with Xander, the more she liked him. "So, you never told me your last name." She teased gently. He laughed, "No I didn't, it's Callahagn, Xander Callahagn." He said, giving her a smile, she gasped, that's where she had seen him before. He was the son of the oil tycoon Rodney Callahagn. "Wait, the Callahagns?" She asked, sounding shocked. He nodded, giving her a smile. "Tired of dad trynna tell me what to do, so I bolted, Felix and Mila wanted to come along, so I let em." He explained, a twinkle of mischeif in his hazel brown eyes.
Suddenly Xander was grabbed from behind and slung to the ground, Katherine's eyes widened, and when she was grabbed she wasted no time, she flipped the man over her back, yanking his gun out of the holster, she rendered it safe with military precision, glaring at the man holding Xander,
Max and Felix stepped to stand on either side of her as the man got up from holding Xander, drawing a nightstick, Katherine gave the man a smirk, obviously enjoying this. She lunged at him, blocking his blow with her forearm, hitting him with a kick, he looked stunned that a Kadrien could move so fast. She used it to her advantage, sweeping his leg, she spun around, sensing the man's partner standing, she hit him in the crotch, he let out a squeal that was more femenine than manly, then dropped to his knees.
The fight was over before it even began. One of the guys groaned, rolling over to look up at Katherine. "Ow..." Xander muttered, looking up at the two downed men. Katherine grabbed the man that had cuffed Xander's keys, unlocking him and helping him up. "Nobody touches my boyfriend." She spat, growling at the men. Xander gave her a worried look. "Katherine...Those were Animal Control officers." Xander said softly, a look of fear filling his eyes. "Doesn't matter, they had no right to attack you, or me." She said angrily, taking his hand softly. Xander shook his head. "We were supposed to go with them, it's part of the PETAPF entrance exam." Xander said, giving her a frown...
