Chapter 7:
The World Of Trace And Kat
Katherine spun around, running back toward the others. "Felix!" Xander yelled, leaping over logs and bushes, his stride matching Katherine's, they burst out of the bushes, Felix's leg was caught in a rusty metal bear trap. "Shit!" Katherine said, leaping down into the small dip, grabbing the metal pole from Ivy. "Help me, Xander!" She said, trying to pry the bear trap apart with the pole, there was blood pouring from Felix's leg. Xander grabbed the bar, helping Katherine pry the traps teeth apart, freeing Felix's leg. Mila pushed her way through them. "Move, I can help him." She said, a look of worry and fear in her eyes. "He needs a doctor!" Ivy said softly. "I am a doctor." Mila replied, pulling a medical kit out of her backpack. "My glasses...Where are they?" Felix asked weakly.
"Max, Ivy, help me find Felix's glasses, Xander, help Mila." Katherine ordered, they obeyed without question, soon the glasses were found and Felix's leg was bandaged up. Katherine used her own walking stick as a splint. She hauled Felix to his feet, helping him stand, Xander took the other side. "You're gonna be okay buddy, we've got you." He said, a tinge of worry in his voice. Katherine could tell Xander cared about his friends just as much as she did Max and Ivy, they were more alike than different. He gave Katherine a worried look, they might not be able to make it to the human city with Felix's injuries. And both of them knew that, but they weren't leaving him behind. "You guys should've just left me." Felix said tiredly, stumbling a little, Mila ran up and took over for Katherine. "Not a chance buddy. We're making it, together." She said softly, placing a hand on Felix's chest to steady him. Katherine could see the way Mila looked at Felix, she was in love with him, and he might not make it.
Katherine told Max to take over for Mila, she pulled her aside, keeping her voice low. "Mila...Felix may not make it, he shouldn't even be moving right now, and he won't survive unless we get him to a real hospital." Katherine said softly. Mila teared up. "No, no, you're wrong, he has to make it!" She said in a shakey whisper. Katherine shook her head gently, putting an arm around Mila's shoulders. The girl sobbed softly as they walked, she couldn't stand to think that the man she loved wouldn't make it. Katherine made herself a promise, never to fall in love, because she didn't want to lose anyone.
After while they made it to a road, they could see buildings in the distance, they were close, within a few miles. Close enough for an ambulance. "Does anyone have a phone?" Katherine asked, running up to the others. "I think..." Xander said, realizing what Katherine wanted to do. He fished the device out of his bag, tossing it to Katherine. She powered it on and dialed 911, they picked up on the first ring. "Hello? My name is Katherine Willis, I need an ambulance just south of the city, my friend Felix is hurt, please hurry!" She said, feeling a rush of hope in her chest that maybe, Felix could be okay. Max and Xander set Felix down in the grass beside the road, Mila ran over and held Felix in her arms softly. "Alright ma'am, we have an ambulance en route. Can you tell me more about what happened?" The dispatcher asked, Katherine had it on speaker. "He stepped into a bear trap, it was old by the looks of it." Katherine said, her voice betraying her hope. "Okay, they're about 15 minutes away." The dispatcher explained. "He doesn't have 15 minutes!" Mila said softly.
"Could you ask them to go faster, he's pretty bad off, he's lost alot of blood." Katherine said frantically. "Alright, give me a moment." The lady said, it was a few seconds before she said anything else. "They've turned on sirens and lights, they will be there in about 9 minutes." The Dispatcher said. Mila turned to Felix. "You hear that Felix? You're gonna make it!" Mila said softly, stroking his face with her hand. The tension mounted as they heard sirens in the distance. Mila kept telling Felix that he'd be okay. Then he said, "I love you M..." His voice was quiet, the whisper of a dying man, he had lost too much blood, and Katherine could see it seeping through the bandages, staining them red. "I love you too Felix, just hold on, they're almost here." She said, tears falling down her face.
His breathing was labored, he wasn't going to last much longer, everyone knew it. That's when the lights appeared in the distance, Max and Xander began jumping around, waving their arms. The ambulance rolled to a stop infront of them, the paramedics wasted no time when it came to getting their equipment. One of the medics checked his pusle, having Mila step back, she didn't want to let go. Ivy had stayed silent for most of the time, her face pale. "Ivy, what's wrong?" Katherine asked softly, watching the paramedics work. "Felix. If Max hadn't been debating with him about plants, Max would've stepped on that bear trap." She whispered, fear in her eyes. Katherine frowned, knowing what was running through Ivy's mind. "It wasn't your fault Ivy." Katherine said softly, placing a reassuring hand on her sister's shoulder. "I know, but if I hadn't pointed out that stupid leaf and Felix tried to correct me..." She whispered, tears beading in her eyes.
Max hadn't gotten hurt, but it could've just as easily been him that got clamped, but it wasn't, and the paramedics were offering them all a ride to the hospital. Katherine gladly accepted for all of them. They piled into the ambulance, riding to the hospital.
Katherine found herself walking around in the lobby, waiting with Max, Ivy, Mila, and Xander. "I'm sorry Xander. He shouldn't have gotten hurt." Katherine said, placing her hand on his shoulder softly. "It's okay. Felix is strong, he'll make it, now that he has a reason to." Xander said, looking over at Mila. Mila was talking to Ivy and Max, tears still running down her face. Xander walked over to her and hugged her softly. Katherine followed, doing the same, Xander gave her a smile. They all five stayed like that for several minutes, until a doctor came out with some good news.
"He survived the surgery, he's in a room now if you'd like to go see him." The doctor said softly, smiling lightly as Mila gave him a thankful hug. The doctor led them through the hospital, they were quite the sight, a group of battered, dirty Kadriens, marching single file through the hospital, amidst other humans.
Eventually they reached his room, he was hooked up to about three machines, all of them necisarry to keep him alive. "Oh Felix..." Mila whispered, her voice barely audible, she ran over to him, grabbing his hand. She squeezed it softly. Xander walked up and put a hand on Mila's shoulder. Katherine could see the care in the way Xander dealt with the situation. He really was like Katherine...
