Chapter 2:

With Questions Unasked

Where the Horizons Meet

My mother, in this new world, had me ready for dinner. She helped me sit on my chair and went to get the food from the kitchen counter for a while. It also so happens that my mother was a single mother, raising two children in her household. One was obviously me, and the other was my cunning little sister,  who just went to take the seat in front of me.

"Hello, big sister Aiya!" She smiled a smile that looked rather fake. I sighed as I think I have recalled something. "Did Vito ask you to play ball with him again? I always knew he had a crush on you!" While she said that, I felt the urge of wanting to die a second time again, and I just stared at her giggling face. "Apparently he also hit me with a ball, you know?" I told her with a stern tone. "Eeek~ That means, he really does have a crush on you!" My crazy sister screamed happily at the top of her lungs after hearing that. And finally, my beloved mother came to the rescue with the food.

"Aika! Stop making crazy assumptions about your sister." My mom scolded her after placing the tray in front of me. I watched her lecture Aika while the little one tries to give an answer to each word that she says. Thinking about what she said, I don't think I have feelings for anyone. I don't even know who I was and am now.

My mom had scolded Aika enough, and she gives a glance at me. "Aiya? You haven't eaten a single bite. Is there something wrong?" I shrugged. "I'm sorry, I think I spaced out a little, mom." She gives out a worried sigh of relief. "You should eat your food now, I cooked that your favourite for you to make you feel better." Aika looks at her slightly envious. "Ma! How come Aiya always gets her favourite food?!"

I ignored the bickering that the mother and the daughter had, and stared down at the dish. It had what looked like to be chicken roasted to a brown colour, and served with what looked like potato slices around it. I took a bite...

And I was ecstatic. It truly tasted good. But there was a feeling of nostalgia flowing through my veins. I remember a familiar taste, and a vision of orange candlelights, beside a landscape of stars, while I took another bite. And again. And again. Every bite, the orange-tinted lights, grew dimmer, while the light of the twinkling circles grew bigger.

The last bite, was when I felt I was a part of the galaxy, as these stars had aligned around me. It was odd, but a beautiful sight.

My mom then poked my cheek. "Seems like someone enjoyed the meal a lot." She took mine and Aika's plate for her to wash. "Since the meal is done, it's time for you girls, to go to sleep. But don't forget to clean up first!"
