Chapter 1:

Now It's My Turn

Kitezh the Invisible Phenomenon

Olga – a stupid girl who thought getting out of her comfort zone was the best way to live life. Little did she know that everyone else had their own way of living the “best life”. One’s happiness grows easily from another’s misfortune.

For example, a scene at a shop completely surrounded by weapons, run by a clerk who can use weapons. And yet, he has not raised a weapon as he is held hostage by two cloaked figures working for the demon lord.

Why do these cloaked figures threaten to kill? Why do they support a so called “demon lord?” Everyone has their story. Otherwise, it is seen as nothing more but just plain unfair evil toward the innocents for their happiness.

“Surrender all your weapons right now,” said one of the cloaked figures eerily.

The other cloaked figure turned to the innocent customers. They could only see a dark robe with darkness fuming out of it. Glowing red eyes scared the patrons to the point of wetting themselves.

“If even one living human doesn’t comply, we’ll just have to kill every one of you one by one. Let the guilt of not giving up your weapon eat you away to the end.”

“AAAAH”

CLANG!

The clerk is locking one of his swords against one of the cloaked figured. The cloak only turned its head.

“I can’t really use this scepter for melee combat, but it works well to defend against your futile weaponry. Now, look at where my scepter is pointing to see your mistake unfold”

FWOOSH!

A dark burning cloud emits from the scepter. The customers are one fire!

“Are these shoppers really the so called warriors to fight against our lord? Such a waste of life. Put them out of- GAAAAAAAAAHK!”

The second cloaked figure fails to give the rest of his threats as he lies dead on the ground. The dark cloud fade away, and reveals a hideous face underneath that matched his evil.

The clerk jumps back and looks down and back up. He turns to the customers who are now rolling on the ground. One of them attempts to use a healing spell to extinguish themselves. It was clear none of them were responsible from the violence he witnessed.

“Yeargh!”

CLANG!

The cloaked figure with the scepter spins and makes contact with something metal. It wasn’t the clerk’s sword again. Instead, a strange floating flesh greeted the cloaked figure and the clerk.

The cloaked figure raised his scepter, and it began to glow.

“GAH-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!”

He too falls on the ground, and suffers the same fate as his comrade.

Three people began to melt into existence. Two paladin guys appeared, but the main attention is on the odd looking woman that stuck out like a sci-fi alien. She is wearing what appears to be a weird helmet, a cape, and brightly colored t-shirt and shorts.

“If know it’s invisible, but I made it very clear. DO. NOT. LOSE. THE. INVISIBLE. DAGGER!”

A dagger suddenly melts into the woman’s hand.

“I bet you didn’t realize I was holding it up to your neck.”

The man gasps and backs away from the woman.

The woman looks at the crowd of burning patrons.

“I don’t know this stuff, so now it’s your turn.” She turns to the clerk. “Oh, and don’t act like you’re the hero of your own story. People like you wouldn’t be extinguishing the very people that you put in danger.”

“But, I was only trying to help! What was I supposed to do?!” exclaimed the clerk.

“Yeah, yeah, I don’t feel like arguing. I had this conversation a billion times now.”

The woman stopped paying notice to everyone.

“Leaving now.”

The sound of the bell to the weapons shop rings as she slams the door open.

“Wait, you just saved my shop! Don’t you want something in return.”

“I’m getting that right now at the guild.”

“But, I didn’t request the guild. This was a hostage situation, so this must’ve been an order by the constable, so there is no”

“Alright, alright! I’ll take whatever!”

The woman snatches the gold pieces from the clerk’s desk, and walks off without another word.

The paladins were speechless. The clerk tried whatever he could to help the patrons.

“Owww! This is dark fire magic. It doesn’t heal like regular fire magic burns.”

“Ow ow ow! Let’s go, we could probably find a cure at the pharmacy.”

The customers rush out as the black smoke continued to make them jump in pain.

“That woman. I hope my guess isn’t correct, but is that the invisible phenomenon Kitezh?”

One of the paladins groans and looks away. “I’m surprised you didn’t know, but Kitezh is a total bitch to work with.”

“Stuck up as always” says the other paladin.

“Isn’t she some sort of Goddess? She was the one who saved this city! We need to respect her!” said the clerk, as he tried to slowly comprehend everything.

“She doesn’t deserve that treatment! She thinks just because she’s some Goddess hero that she can treat us like pawns on a chess board?”

“I don’t know what her issue is. She comes out of nowhere buck naked and in a helmet screaming. Next time we see her, she turned the entire damn city invisible, and flabbergasted the demon lord’s army when they found nothing.”

The clerk paces around and looks at the swords and bows on the walls and in his cabinets.

“So, this Kitezh girl came out of nowhere just to save us? Well, it is apparent she continues to save us, but she also hates doing that kind of work. Where did she come? Does she work for someone?”

“Sigh, no one knows. She claims she is a Goddess, and we address her as the namesake of our city of Kitezh.”

“So, she just wanted to name herself that, or her name was really-“

“I DON’T KNOW! We keep asking her, but she just ignores and goes on with saving people reluctantly.”

The clerk pulls out a broom to clean up the mess of dead cloaked bodies, and burned wooden panelings.

“Well, as long as she isn’t trying to kill us, nothing we can do but praise the phenomenon. She’s probably doing all of this just because she’s bored. She didn’t ask to do any of the work, but I bet she doesn’t want to sit around doing nothing too.”

And that is how Kitezh, the woman who was once Olga, had reset her life to become the invisible phenomenon of the city! Oh, but these side characters are almost correct. Kitezh didn’t actually try to save the city. It was all just an accidental experiment with her newfound powers.

However, these characters have raised some interesting points. Why did Kitezh come to this world? Does she actually have a goal in her life? No one was able to break an answer out of her, but one shall create an answer.

Just like an unfortunate encounter at a café, a simple guild task in the fantasy world can suddenly change one’s life.
