Chapter 499:
En Passant Grandmaster
Mimoko's eyes widened in shock as she stared at the chessboard before her and Daria. "Okaa-chan... This is..."
"The reset mate. It's difficult to pull off, though more so because your opponent will resign before you can complete it," Daria stated.
"And not the fact that one wrong move equals stalemate?"
"Hmm? Memorizing things is the easy part. All you gotta do is get things to a certain position, then, everything's forced for the king."
...
Mimoko opened her eyes as she recalled all that Daria had taught her a few nights prior. "Kuon, I'm angry. That's why I'll be subjecting you to judgement and execution upon this very chessboard. And that's all in addition to the punishment you'll get from the DESPER," she glared as she moved her pawn to c1 and promoted it to a rook.
Kuon was taken aback, but ultimately burst into laughter. "You're trying to do what your mother tried to do to Xiao Lin. TRY IT! You're nothing before me!" she scoffed as she moved her pawn to a4.
It took many moves and lots of careful thinking, but by move 96, Mimoko moved her queen to d1 and the picture was complete.
"You... So that's what this was all about... Go ahead. Your arrogance will allow me to escape this with a draw," Kuon thought as she moved her king to c7.
What followed was more piece shuffling with some checks as Mimoko attempted to set things up for the reset mate Daria had taught her about. It took a bit, but by move 108, Mimoko could finally see a path to victory as she moved her rook to d8.
Kuon scowled, but still remained confident things would end in a stalemate as she moved her king to b6. "She's beginning to flounder. All for bravado. But that bravado will be my salvation," she thought.
However, she couldn't have been more wrong.
"Mate in 7," Mimoko declared as she moved her queen to e7.
"Um, what?" Kuon snarled as she was forced to move her king to c6.
"Check. Mate in 6," Mimoko growled as she moved her rook to d6.
Kuon gritted her teeth as she moved her king to c5. Her frustration only grew after queen c7, check, forced her king to b4, but subsided slightly after Mimoko moved her rook to d2. She was still left with just one legal move, king b3, but after that, Mimoko moved her rook to h2, allowing her to move her king back to b4, though it was key to note that ever since Mimoko first declared mate in 7, not once had Kuon had a choice on where to move. The same was true after Mimoko moved her rook to h1, as all Kuon could do was move her king back to b3. And then, came the penultimate blow that ultimately decimated Kuon; queen d6.
"What? It looks like stale- ...! NO! No, my only move is c2. No, If I go there, IF I GO THERE... IT WOULD BE HUMILIATION! NO, I can't allow that. I'll run out the clock. Yes. I'll- ...!?"
Kuon's thoughts froze as she suddenly found her hand moving her king to c2 on it's own. "NO! STOP! WHY!? WHY!?"
"I believe it's because the DESPER will give you the courtesy of making the move for you if there's only one possible legal move you can make. And that just happens to be your only one," Mimoko glared as Kuon completed the move.
"No, no, NO! Mimoko, darling, how about we call it a draw, OK?" Kuon pathetically smiled, her pale face now encased behind a constant torrent pf sweat.
"No. You've actually angered me beyond hatred. I'm disgusted in you for what you've done. Fuck you. Checkmate," Mimoko glared as she flipped off Kuon while slamming her queen down on d1, winning the game.
Kuon screamed in horror, tears blasting out of her eyes, but this was only the beginning. Metal tentacles then sprung forth from the DESPER, restraining Kuon as they stripped her and shaved her completely bald. Her muffled screams echoed as she was encased in wax, and then unceremoniously unwaxed and dropped onto the ground with a dull thud.
Trembling, she slowly rose to all fours, yet refused to look at her hairless state in the mirror the DESPER had placed before her. Thus, Mimoko took the liberty of getting up and forcing Kuon to look up, by clutching her cheeks and forcefully tilting her head up.
"Take a good look at yourself. This is what you yourself deemed as proper humiliation. And don't forget, this is how your professional chess career ends. Now, the only chess you'll play is in prison, where you'll get no personal glory. I hope you suffer for all that you've done," Mimoko glared as tears oozed out of Kuon's eyes.
Kuon was then warped away to the WWCF's holding facility where she was at least given the decency of being clad in an orange jumpsuit. Back at the playing hall, Nyoan somberly stared at the floor as her DESPER deactivated. "Kuon-sama, nya..."
While it would take some time for Nyoan to come to terms with Kuon's betrayal, for team Japan, this victory over Kuon was celebratory all around.
The others silently hugged Mimoko, refraining from celebrating too much in the open, as the hailed their historic achievement of sweeping the United States of America 4-0. This meant that for 11 straight games, 12 if the Finland match was factored in, Japan's women's team had won with perfect 4-0 margins. Kuon might have put Mimoko in a sour mood, but now that she had been properly punished, Mimoko could smile once more as she basked in her achievement.
