Chapter 7:
Beta Test? We got more than we bargained for in our game’s beta test.
“I am Stephen, the town cleric. Who am I to be taking a look at?”
“Her, she took an attack from the Burasu to the midsection without any armour. I tried to stop the bleeding best I could with what I had available to me.”
“Right, well I will give this my best shot. You might want to stand back, healing spells can be intense at high levels.”
Lexa and Ilev both take a few steps back as they watch Stephen activate what they can only assume is a high-level magic spell that is used to heal people. As a multitude of small green orbs appear from thin air and float wistfully towards the injured portion of Suieol attaching themselves to the damaged section and disappearing into the ether from which they came. Slowly it looked like the wound was healing, but Stephen stopped and started panting clearly exhausted.
“That is the best I can do… for now at least… The wound was so large that it took all of my remaining magic power to get her into a state where she will no longer die, but… the rest of the healing process will have to be done at another time or by nature itself.”
“Thank you for all you have done already, I’m sure you will need something in return. Right now, we can only repay you in quest work as we have no money.”
“I am a cleric, I took an oath to heal those who need healing, no matter their race or opinions. Therefore, I cannot accept payment for my actions, I was doing what I studied so long to be able to do. The act of saving life should not be restricted by monetary or other means; it should be given to all when needed with the only payment being that the life extended is lived to the fullest possible.”
With that Eule helped Stephen out of the house and back to the church, leaving Lexa and Ilev inside to ponder what they should do next. As most of the group have fallen asleep after the long and stressful day and a half that they had previous.
“Ilev you not gonna sleep?”
“Probably not, still to amped up from the mountain and worried about Suieol to even close my eyes for more than just a blink.”
“I guess that’s fair. It took me a while to get to sleep before you found me in the forest earlier as well because of the adrenaline and Suieol’s condition.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you move as fast as you did when you grabbed Suieol and went down the mountain, but I guess that explains the state you yourself are in.”
“What do you mean? I’m fine, aren’t I?”
“Well, you’re in a bit of a state with your clothes all ripped up from your first aid attempt, but the real damage is what you did to those poor shoes.”
“Huh. Oh, yeah I guess sliding down most of the mountain because of the gravel and loose terrain might not have been the ideal way of getting down.”
“No I doubt that it was. Hopefully we can get some new clothes and some proper gear from this village if we’re willing to bargain with a fae race.”
“I wouldn’t mind getting a sword and armour everythin’ else is a bonus.”
“Same here. Not like we could beat, I think you called it the Burasu, even if we had the best gear in the land.”
“True. This place at least seems friendly, so it might be worth trying to get some information and see if we can’t get appraised here to see if we do really have those godly powers… Ilev?”
Lexa looks over at her companion only to see that they have fallen asleep, a faint smile forms on her face as she knows how hard he had been pushing himself to make sure everyone was safe. As he once more took the mantle of the leader when this time his instructions could have much more severe consequences than a delay or a bug in the game’s development. So, she gets up and lets her friends sleep as she goes to explore the village, outside she finds Eule having returned from taking Stephen back to the church. And the two start to walk around the town with Eule providing an explanation as to where all the shops are and the purpose of each one when they pass by it. After the tour of the village Lexa returns to the house that she and her friends have been put up in, finding it full of still sleeping bodies. And with a new wave of exhaustion sweeping over her she too finds a place to curl up and nap. Unfortunately, her nap and the sleep of the rest of the group is interrupted by the alarmed ringing of a church bell, with such a loud and frantic sound the group rush to get ready and head outside into the village square where at its center was a four-legged beast that was black with a blue outer hue. But its form kept glitching, with it looking like it was having certain parts stretch or move location within space before returning to normal before anyone could register the changes that had happened to the creature.
“So, the hell is that thing?”
“That’s the teeny tiny problem I told you about, Lexa.”
“Right. And what does it do?”
“It’s a void beast we don’t know where it appears from, but it causes havoc then tries to take someone away with it we don’t let it. And then it just leaves.”
“Well that’s great. So how do we make it leave, without it breaking a bunch of stuff?”
“By fighting it and making it scared of us. I think. No one has ever tried to fight one before, we’re all too scared to get near the thing.”
“Right, and how exactly are ‘we’ meant to fight it? We have no weapons after all.”
