Chapter 3:

Section 3: Subsection 4: Clause 5: Paragraph 6

Omnium-Gatherum

Long ago, in the Town of Thornwick, there was a question raised among the general populace. Which part of the egg was best for eating: the yolk or the white? Which contained the nutrients? Could you eat just one and get the same benefit as eating both?

Well, as it happened, a convent of holy woman was charged with finding the answer. They had quite a many chickens you see, and quite a many chickens means quite a many eggs. Also, they were well known for their delicious assortments of baked convections. They knew how to work an egg.

Receiving their task, they set out to answer the question. Separating the yolk from the white proved easy enough, but then came the difficulties. How were they to discover which was best for eating?

They mixed the yolk and white into separate pig troughs to see which the animals would prefer. With their keen animal instincts, perhaps the pigs would choose the one where the nutrients were to be found. But nay, the hogs consumed it all, favoring neither yolk nor white, merely making pigs of themselves. And when asked which was best, the animals had no answer, but only squealed their piggy squeals.

Other animals the woman tried—dogs, cats, rats, horses, chickens—yet none proved any more inclined to provide an answer than the pigs. Alas, they were at their wits end, and it was clear they needed humans for their test. But what manner of barbarian would perform such vile experiments as this on his fellow man?

The holy women shook with the very thought. Yet still the question remained unanswered, and did they not have a duty to their fellow man to find the answer? They did! And they would!

The most timid of women were removed, sent off to other convents until the experiments were completed. Only the most stouthearted remained, and blessed they were for trudging on as they did.

With a prayer on their lips for the strength to do what must be done, they were granted custody of many a convicted villain, for they could not subject common fellows to such treatment as this.

The women separated their eggs into yolk and white. Of half the subjects, they gave yolk and to the other, white. And so the experiment went. Day after day, it continued as the people waited with bated breath.

The subjects of the trial, villainous as they were, grew all the more horrifying to behold. Many of the women could not bear the scene and were forced to depart. Brutal though it was, those who remained pressed on. It was for the greater good, they told themselves and each other.

Finally, finally, the answer came, and, finally, it all came to an end. After enduring so much hardship, the holy women of the convent offered a final prayer to their god when the last of the subjects followed their fellows and perished. The significance of these results could not be understated. It was a most important discovery that could not be denied. When the egg yolk and egg white are separated from each other, they become poisonous.

A new law was put in place to immortalize the results of this noble quest. Laws and Governance in the Town of Thornwick Section 3: Subsection 4: Clause 5: Paragraph 6: None shall separate the egg yolk from the egg white, under penalty of flogging on the first offense and death by hanging on the second.

And what do we learn from this tale, you may be wondering. Well, it is simple, when in the Town of Thornwick, do not separate the egg yolk from the egg white.
