Chapter 1:

The silent library

Into the light: In a new dawn

The girl kicks her feet as she is sitting at a desk; she was not put out by the height of her chair. She had blonde hair and blue eyes; she didn't seem to be from the area. The library ambience was comforting; she always came here whenever she had to do heavy thinking, and the silence happened to always help whenever in a gruelling studying situation. Her Japanese textbook open in front of her, she squeezed her pen in agony and confusion.
"Why does Japanese have to be so damn hard, I have no clue how to answer this," she sputters under her breath, loud enough for anyone a in close proximity to hear.
She rests her head on the table and sighs, completely exhausted from her futile attempts of answering any kind of question. A nearby janitor attention was grabbed from her antics, he looked quite bothered. The janitor puts his yellow cleaning mop in the bucket and goes up to the girl with a smile on his face. With a quick tap on her shoulder, she quickly shot right back up and looked him in the eye.
"Hey, could you please be quieter? There are a lot of people trying to read and study here at the moment" he says in fluent Japanese.
He is getting a stunned look from Eliza, not understanding a single word she was just told. Looking around and observing her surroundings makes her realise that people around her were staring, it didn't take a genius to figure out what was going on.
"I am sorry," she says in her broken Japanese, almost letting a British accent slip.
A second later, sees an opportunity. She points her finger that she stained with ink by repeatedly crossing things out, at a question from the textbook. She begins to repeatedly tap her finger in the same spot, hoping he would take the hint. The janitor began to question what sort of weirdo he was currently interacting with. He then arches his eyebrow, leans over her desk, and puts one hand on it. Then proceeds to look at the question she was pointing at, just to realise she circled the wrong thing. The janitor looks at the book and then back at her and does a deep sigh.
"Foreigners really can be strange sometimes," he says to himself, the girl still looking at him innocently, having no clue what he just said.
He picks up her pencil and circles the correct answer, decides to forget the weird behaviour he just witnessed and doesn't question it further, walking away without a second thought. The girl begins glooming at the realisation she got the question wrong. While her head being down, she tries looking up to the guy to thank him, only to see that he seemed to have already vanished. She places her head back on the table, wondering how she expects to answer the rest of the questions in the book.

Two days go by, and the same girl from before is lying on her bed with her Japanese textbook on the floor, staring at her ceiling with stress and worry. She peeks into her phone calendar and sees an event she has scheduled on her phone.
"Crap, the new school year starts in a week, I got to lock in," she says clutching her fit and waving it in the air, her body filled with new motivation she never had before.

Her pencil begins slipping out of her hand, as she is slouching back on her office chair. The exhaustion from all the writing she has done was beginning to make her reach her breaking point.
"I can't do this anymore... I want to go back to sleep..." She says with closed eyes.
She leaps off her chair and lands on her soft, comfortable, warm blanket, slowly beginning to cover herself with it. Suddenly, her peace was disrupted from a constant noise coming outside. With a gloomed look, gets out of bed and walks up to the window to see what's going on. She briefly glances outside and sees people with a strange uniform moving boxes into her apartment building.
"Could someone actually be moving in next door?" She ponders, wondering if she should do something if that was the case.
It made sense, she did remember there being a vacant apartment right next to hers, however she had to confirm this. The before tired girl, goes to her front door, slowly opens it and looks both ways examining the hallway to see what was going on. Then quickly realises she was making direct eye contact with a boy outside the apartment next to hers. The boy looked at her with confusion in his eyes, clearly wondering why he was being stared at by his new neighbour, in complete embarrassment, she slammed her door shut.

A day later, with a room filled with boxes, the neighbour hears a knock on his front door. He tries to quickly rush to open it, playing some sort of game of parkour on his way there trying not to step on any of his boxes covering the passage. A few seconds go by; he places his hand on the handle and begins to slowly twist it. As the door began to open, he gets a glimpse of the person outside, unsure on who it may be. He opens the door fully and gets bombarded with a girl.
"Hello! My name is Eliza Avery, uh..." A worried look began to appear on her face; she seemed to have forgotten some of her lines.
He realises that it may be the girl who he helped a few days ago at the library but decided it would be better not to mention it. It wasn't hard to guess that she wasn't from the country, however he was still wondering where she was actually from.
"I am sorry," says Eliza in broken Japanese.
"Why?" He responds back in Japanese
"I look at you yesterday"
"Oh, it's fine"
Eliza in relief with his forgiveness begins looking at him with a smile, beginning to wonder if she has seen him before, his face just seemed so familiar. She began to try remembering a boy that looked similar to her age, but the only person that came to mind was the janitor from the library.

"Hello, my name is Kuroseki Shizujō, I appreciate the warm welcome but if you don't mind me asking where are you from?" he asks in Japanese.

Eliza begins to panic; she understood nothing that just came from his mouth; in a quick attempt she tries taking her phone out and searches for gooble translate. Kuroseki can only sigh from her poor display.
"I can also speak English, if you want me to." Kuroseki suggested in English.
"Oh, that makes things a lot less complicated, hello, welcome to the neighbourhood." she says with her panic quickly coming to a halt.
A quick thought then came into her mind, she began wondering if she should ask and decides to ask anyways.
"Uhm... since you can speak English, I was wondering if you could teach me how to speak Japanese by any chance?" She says as she has her fingers crossed behind her back, hoping for a yes.
"Why do you want my help?"
"It's just that there aren't many people who speak English here," she says awkwardly, never been more embarrassed in her life. "I just thought knowing someone who spoke both languages would be helpful."
Kuroseki thought for a moment, he knew this was more trouble than it was worth, however he was new to the area. He needed to make some friends in the area he just moved to, even if they were a foreigner.
"Sure, I can help, however only in my free time and on the days I don't work."
Her eyes light up after hearing that agreement, it was the best thing she has heard all day.
"Thank you so much, appreciate you a lot! Alright, I'll leave you be, now. Bye-bye!"
She quickly begins to run back home, waving goodbye, as she watches her new neighbour wave her back.

Once she entered her own apartment and closed the door behind her, she rested her back on the inside of the door.
"I can't believe it, my first friends since I first moved into this country!"
