Chapter 16:
Our Town in another world
Jenna sat silently in the car as it self-drove back to the mansion. With her injuries, Rosa had been taken to a medical facility for proper evaluation, meaning her audience with Muki would be on hold. Cleanup crews serving under Muki's direct orders had successfully procured Aoi's and Winona's remains, despite running into some trouble when a stray dog attempted to gnaw on what was left of Winona. But after chasing it away, everything was back on track.
"Madam, was killing that girl truly necessary in the grand scheme of things?" Jenna asked.
"Ngh, I can't shut you up with how bad my head's throbbing. Listen, she was too much of a chaos factor. You saw how she acted in the car, keeping her around would be too dangerous. She's not the type to follow orders."
"Even after you had me microchip her?"
"Jenna, you know how the terra link chips work. They connect to the terra server in the city which I have full control over. I can take control over anyone that has a chip in them at any given time, but it's straining to me and it's a pain to do it simultaneously. She might've had good reflexes, but what good are they if I have to be in control of them 24/7? At that point she's just another meat soldier who's body I can bend and contort to suit my needs."
"So she was expendable then?"
"I'll give her a heroic headline in the papers for her sacrifice if that'll shut you up."
Jenna shook her head and placed her hand on her forehead. She always hated Muki's Machiavellian demeanor and was more often than not forced to comply with it. Yet in the times she's was allowed to speak freely, she clung to a hope that perhaps one day, her words would reach Muki and cause her to reform her personality.
"I curse every day since Monika decided to abandon you in that alley. You clearly lost your humanity along with your eye back then," Jenna thought as she closed her eyes and took a short nap.
...
A bandaged up Rosa scowled as a young nurse with wavy black hair wheeled her down the halls of the hospital in a wheelchair.
"Isn't it GREAT!? You don't gotta spend the night!" the chipper nurse grinned as she leaned her face in close to Rosa's.
"It is preferable. But where am I going to go? My place is in Usagi, and Usagi is either gone or back in the real world."
An unsettling smile spread across the nurse's face. "You can room with me. I LOVE cute girls like you."
"Fuck no."
The nurse scowled and spat as she parked Rosa in the lobby. "I tried, but now you're stuck on your own. Ah, you know the Fuukuros wanted to drag you over. Hear the eldest daughter's a microchipping maniac. Won't get tears from me when they turn you into a robot."
"That kind of psychological attack won't work on me. And for all I know, maybe they already chipped me. I was knocked out for how long?"
"Not telling. I only talk to people that care about me. Bye."
And just like that, the nurse was gone.
"How many more crazy women is life going to throw at me? Hah, what am I gonna do now?"
Realizing her wheelchair wouldn't move unless the parking break was released, Rosa attempted to climb out and undo it herself. Her body ached greatly, but to her own surprise, she was able to move around without too much trouble.
"Huh, guess this is why they said I was free to go. Still, how can I move around like this after being pierced by all those arrows."
"Probably due to the healing properties of my earth magic," a familiar voice stated.
Rosa let out a shriek as DaVinci crawled out from under the seat of the wheelchair. "W- Were you there the whole time?"
"Affirmative. I have been sticking with you ever since we first met. All to keep you safe."
Rosa quickly scoured the area with her eyes. "And did anyone else see you?"
"No. I've remained-"
"AAAHH! WH- WHAT IS THAT THING!?" the nurse from before screamed as she returned.
"Great, she came back. Well, hope I can run, otherwise you're carrying me," Rosa grumbled as she ran outside with DaVinci hopping along behind her.
After gaining some distance, the two rested at a nearby fountain surrounded by bushes.
"Now that we have a moment of breath, care to talk knowledge?" DaVinci asked as he nestled himself in the bush.
"Sure. I need something to calm me down. So how about we start with you. Does this man look familiar?" Rosa asked as she showed DaVinci a picture of Leonardo da Vinci.
"Of course, that's the Da Vinci I've based my life around."
"How'd you first hear of him?"
"Hmm, say 50 years ago. The texts just arrived along with some of his creations. From there, a new fascination in my life started."
"They just appeared? Were they... summoned?"
"Perhaps, but not by me. Though our world is versed in magic, it is rather primitive, following just the basic elements plus healing and telepathy."
"There's telepathy?"
"Exclusive to the elves for now."
"Are the elves the only other mythical race here besides your own?"
"No. There are elves and dwarves, complete with respective subspecies like dark elves and dwears, but there are also beastkin and humans to name a few."
"There's other humans in this world?"
"Yes, but ever since the fall of the kingdom centuries ago, they're little more than patches of nomads on the map. Maybe you'll find a small village of them here or there, but no large settlements like that of this or the elven and dwarf epicenters."
"How do those cities compare to this one?"
"They don't. They are large and grand, yes, but lack all that you see in abundance here."
"How far away are these cities?"
"In human distance? About 5,050 km by tunneling to Evendale, the elven capitol and say 6,000 km south of here is the dwarven city of Buvaria. This area of the world is rather isolated and not very populated. It makes it almost perfect for your city to reside in were it not for the Aarlord elf tribe nearby and Hougen the fulguriter."
"Was that elf from before-"
"Yes, she was from the tribe. Be weary of elves you may encounter as the chances are high they're from Aarlord."
"Are they all really that bad?"
"It was the Aarlord tribe that felled the great human kingdom of Putopia, and have continued to reduce human settlements to dust ever since. And speaking purely from a dwarven angle, there's never a good elf. But in the chance an envoy of Evendale makes their way here, they would probably be more open to facilitating trade for the benefit of all."
A small smile formed on Rosa's face. That information is plentiful, yet sadly I'm just a girl from another town stranded here. My social standing is the lowest of the low, and I have no allies here, so I doubt any would bend an ear to me."
"But you are easy to approach, and posses the qualities of a leader."
"Now that's putting too much stock in me. All I am is a timid shut-in, scared of setting foot outside. And with all that happened to me today, curling up into a ball in a dark cozy room is all I want to do right now."
"Yet you don't sound timid in the slightest."
Rosa wearily smiled as a memory of her passionately debating others back during high school flashed before her. "No, I just lack a stutter... that's all," she chuckled as she gently rubbed her bald head.
