Chapter 17:
Our Town in another world
A crowd of people murmured amongst themselves as they gathered before a makeshift stage and podium.
"Whazzup, Ohana! You ready to meet some amazing people?" Machiko smiled as she strolled onto the stage with mic in hand.
The crowd cheered with excitement as Ikebukuro and Bisento joined Machiko on stage.
"Why the hell do we have to put up with this?" Bisento telepathically snarled.
"What's wrong with it? She's glorifying us for saving her daughter. Plus it's fascinating to watch her attitude relax and become more casual. You'd think this would be the time she'd stiffen up, but she does the opposite and loosens up. Dare I say she looks more enthusiastic here than in private," Ikebukuro telepathically responded back.
"Now some of you might have seen the news, so you might be aware of who Ikebukuro and Bisento are, but if you don't, allow me to introduce them. These two beautiful ladies are elves of this world which not only slaughtered the goblins that attacked us last night, but also saved the life of my precious daughter, the pride of our town, Yamane."
On cue, Yamane slowly stepped out, smiling and waving to the crowd.
"She was in rough shape, but rough shape is nothing for our badass Mary Sue. Her aura drew Ikebukuro and Bisento to her, and powered her to a perfect recovery," Machiko gushed.
"Mother, you're exaggerating quite a bit. I just got lucky, nothing more," Yamane modestly smiled.
"She's so humble. That's why she's perfect!"
...
Machiko let out an exhausted sigh as she sat down in the back of the limo.
"That was quite the showing we had. You really do know how to hype up a crowd," Ikebukuro smiled.
"I've been hyping up crowds for years, long before I became mayor."
"How so?"
A giddy smirk formed on Machiko's face as she flashed her phone before Ikebukuro. On screen was a young woman with long bleached hair, clad in shorts, sneakers, a bra top, and fishnet leggings and gloves playing an electric guitar.
"That was me in my teens. Surprising, I know, but back then, I loved nothing more than blasting my eardrums out by stringing an electric guitar. Sadly, lineage and social status meant I had to retire from my rock career, but my rebel spirit never died. I showed up my father by beating him in an election, then kicked him out of the family and took all his assets. Now my stage is writing policy instead of music to make this place better for all."
"This electric guitar... it reminds me of a lute."
"Do you play?"
"Oh no, but there were some I knew who did."
"Wanna try your hand at it? I got spares back at home. OH! How rude of me, I haven't even invited you to my home for dinner! The day's just been so hectic."
"And the sun's just risen. But I will take you up on your offer to see your-"
"SPLENDID! It's been ages since I last jammed with someone. Yamane's more into harp while Mu refuses to play any instrument other than the fake ones conjured in her brainrotting video games. None of my friends play guitar either, so you'll be the first in a long time."
Ikebukuro nervously smiled as she began wracking her brain on how she'd tackle this challenge.
...
Muki scowled as she stared at a stack of papers that had been recovered from Winona's knapsack. "Collier's... The Most Dangerous Game... The hell? And it says it's from January 1924. Gotta be a replica, but then how did it get into the hands of an elf in this world?"
"Have you tried carbon dating it?" Jenna asked.
"No, but it might not be a bad idea to head to the university. We can get lab results from both this and the elf's remains, and further testimony on what happened with her."
"My apologies, but I don't follow."
"Kagerosa."
"'Kagerosa'?"
"Sana Kagerosa. She's the top researcher there and Pinky Rosa's mother. With no way back to Usagi, Rosa's next course of action will likely be heading to the university to see if her mother's around."
"But if she's her mother, than isn't there a possibility she was back at her home in Usagi when the warp occurred?"
"Nope, I saw her on camera. She's here. That's good for us on four fronts. Now I can ask her to help me modify the terra link chips to be even stronger in addition to the other stuff."
"Is that seriously all you think about?"
"No, in fact, we're gonna swing by the farms on the eastern side and collect soil samples from there and outside town. I need to know just how hostile the land really is gonna be to us."
...
As the limo pulled up to the mansion, Machiko got out and walked inside, calling out for Muki. Hearing no reply, she inquired her whereabouts to a servant and was informed of Muki's departure.
"That girl, always doing her own thing. She better not be playing games wherever she is," Machiko huffed as she went back outside to escort the elves inside. "Have you ever been to a place like this?" she asked the two.
Ikebukuro smiled silently while Bisento began to scowl.
"Bisento, don't. I'll send you off on your own if you dare so much as ruin the atmosphere," Ikebukuro telepathically warned.
"This is just like all those other noble mansions. I can't help it if it brings back bad memories."
"Well strengthen thy temperament, because it's showing on your face."
"Sister, must we keep up this charade? You've learned enough about how things work, so let me slaughter everyone here."
"No. We don't know everything. We can't just attack blindly."
"Do you truly want to attack? You seem like you're more fascinated with these humans than not."
"I do, which is why I want to learn everything I can before so our takeover is seamless. Bisento, have you not had faith in me for centuries? Now is no different. Trust me and follow my lead."
Leading the elves to a room on the bottom floor, Machiko flicked on the lights to reveal a wall of electric guitars and a floor full of speakers.
"Just to be clear, I've never played the lute before," Ikebukuro nervously smiled.
"No worries, I'll give you a visual demo," Machiko grinned as she took off her suitcoat, revealing her green undershirt beneath was actually a t-shirt with rock logos plastered on it's back and front.
Selecting a guitar from the wall, Machiko plugged it into a speaker and began rocking out.
The sound was unlike anything the elves had ever heard before.
"Wh- What a repulsive sound! It's infuriating to listen to. How dare she compare this to a lute," Bisento thought.
Ikebukuro had a different opinion. "This... This is MAJESTIC! I've always hated how calm the lute sounds! This is a battle cry! Our people have longed for something like this! I must learn it. I MUST LEARN IT!" she thought as a demented smile spread across her face.
"That's the kind of look I like to see! So, wanna try?" Machiko smiled as she stopped playing and held out her guitar to Ikebukuro.
"Teach me to play this majesty!" Ikebukuro grinned as she grabbed the guitar.
In no time flat, Ikebukuro was rocking out, letting her hair loose and whipping it round n' round as she jammed with Machiko, and Bisento couldn't be more horrified. "S- Sister... No, you're losing yourself. SISTER! Ngh... Ugh!" she cried.
But Ikebukuro had completely tuned her out, forcing her to just stare and watch. The jam ended soon after, with both Machiko and Ikebukuro panting in exhaustion as they stood over pools of sweat.
"Heh, shit's lit, huh?" Machiko grinned.
"Yeah, lit shit," Ikebukuro grinned back.
