Chapter 15:

MAGIC vs POWERS

STAR AWESOME

The white concrete floor of the lounge shone under the sunlight, reflecting the amber rays all around. The soft clattering from the tableware resonated as everyone indulged in their breakfast.

Riley patted Ren's shoulder and sat down next to him. "Morning, Ren."

"Morning." Ren continued eating.

I wonder what she is actually like.

Riley took a bite but kept her gaze fixated on him. Before she could say a word, Dacoria cupped Ren's face and turned him to himself.

"Ren, Amanda told me to give you a potion for powers; let's go."

Ren blinked, right, the powers.

"Should I come along to explain stuff?" The voice lingered in silence. Ren turned to face Sen, who sat with a smirk. Ren stood frozen.

"Sen, just leave him alone." Riley jumped up.

"Shut it, Riley, this doesn't concern you." Sen glanced at Ren. "Come on, Ren, aren't you going to try changing? Hmm? Or all you can do is whine and hate yourself?"

"Sen, I will explain everything to him," Philomena said softly. Sen sighed, still smirking.

"Let's go, Ren." Philomena grabbed Ren's cuff and pulled him gently.

The door to the potion room slid open.
It was a long, white hall with multiple shelves lined against the walls.
Conical flasks with colorful fluid were arranged on the shelves.
The center of the room was empty.

Ren took a step, following Dacoria and Philomena. He strolled along the shelves, examining the flasks that bore labels. He was still shivering from the encounter with Sen. He stopped in front of a pink potion. "Love potion?"

"We got hate potion here too," Dacoria added proudly.

Great, they can play with feelings, too. Ren kept an uninterested face.

"We should start explaining things to you before giving you powers." Dacoria cleared his throat. "This world has two types of abilities: powers and magic."

"Powers are controlled by manoid, and magic by knowledge." Philomena picked out a flask.

Dacoria took a step closer to him, "and the potions will give you manoid."

Ren looked around. "So I will be able to use the powers."

Dacoria's eyes sparkled. "You are wizur (wiser) than your face."
Ren sighed, "I think you tried complimenting me, but you couldn't say it right."

Philomena handed Ren the potion. "The manoid gives two types of powers: species-orientated or the obvious powers."

Ren looked at her, confused. "I don't get it?"

Dacoria began laughing; Philomena glared at him. He turned around and sat down in a corner.
"Was that your power?" Ren shouted in astonishment.
Philomena giggled, "No, no, I just know how to leash him."

Dacoria glanced at them before staring at the wall.

"Well, let's go over everything. Magic comes from knowledge, basically about sigils and the magical language."

She sat down, rubbing her finger on the floor.
She tapped on it, and a symbol appeared.
Fire erupted out of it, twisting into the form of a phoenix.
It rose and began flying.
"Wow, that's so cool. Can I do that too?" Ren exclaimed.
"Nah, you're dumb," Dacoria called out from the corner.

"If you learn the magical language, you will be able to do this too," Philomena continued, glaring at Dacoria. "There are three types of magical language: Star, Moon and demonic."

Ren scratched his face. "O-oh."
Philomena noticed his confusion. "Star Area residents use the Star magical language."

"We live in the star area...so where are the demon and moon places?"

"The Fantasy Realm has 3 parts: Star Area, Moon Area and Demon Land. All three have their own magical languages, which are different from their native language."

Ren looked at the potion, "And I guess learning the language takes time."

Philomena smiled. "Yes, sorcerers are mainly linguistic scholars who spend their whole lives learning magic."
She pointed at the potion. "The potions are made of manoid; thus, they give the ability to use powers."

"Do I have to drink this?" Ren stared at the bottle.
"Yes"
"Aah, what's it made of?" Ren tried hiding his disgust.
"Garbage," Dacoria said, lying on the floor looking at them from afar.
I hope he is lying

"Manoid," Philomena smiled
I hope she isn't lying.

Ren gulped the whole thing down.

Tastes like water. I wonder how manoid was put in this.

Philomena took the empty bottle from him and put it back on the shelf.
"Manoid is extracted from other species, but it can also be made using stones and crystals."

"E-extracted?" Ren didn't like the sound of it.

"Don't worry, it's a painless process to get manoid.

Ren looked at the floor, trying to feel the difference. "U-um, so you said something about species-orientated powers and obvious ones?"

"Different species are born with different types of manoids, which gives those species species-orientated powers." Philomena paused.

"Like powers which are limited to their species?" Ren nervously added.

"Exactly." Philomena clapped her hands together.
"He be wuze (wise)." Dacoria got up and joined them.

"Why are you here?" Philomena glared at him.
"To show uff my powers," Dacoria smirked, and a tentacle tore out of his shirt.
"What is that thing?" Ren stared at the tentacle wagging midair.
"My ten-ten-thingie," Dacoria announced proudly.

"Aren't you a bit too old for mispronouncing things?" Ren snarled, but his focus was on the tentacle.

Philomena sighed, "Dac is a power taker, so he has tentacles which can grow out of his body."
Ren's eyes widened. "P-power taker?"
"Power takers are an extinct species of star area; they can suck out manoid from anyone. In fact, they can absorb, copy and use it." Philomena replied.
"I can absord (absorb) manoid even when outside body," Dacoria shouted.

Philomena looked at Ren, who was bowing down to Dacoria, who was posing. "W-what are you—"
"I am showing my respect to him." Ren remained in a bow.
"Yesh, Show me that, and I won't suck out your manoid." Dacoria spoke in a godlike manner, patting Ren.
Philomena knocked on Dacoria's head. "Ren, you are spoiling him more."
Dacoria went back and sat down on the floor facing the wall.

"So why is he not a human?" Ren glanced at Dacoria.
Dacoria ducked his head when he heard the question.
Maybe that was personal.
"That is a long story; we'll tell you later." Philomena looked at the floor.

After some silence, Philomena continued, "Obvious powers are powers that are common amongst all species, namely telekinesis, teleportation, flying, mind contact, manoid construction, manoid concentration, and a few more."
"That is so awesome," Ren exclaimed.
"Yes, we are star awesome." Dacoria shouted out before staring back at the wall.
Ren looked at him confused.
Philomena whispered to Ren, "He wasn't listening; he only heard 'awesome'."

He is strong but kind of drags the talk way too much.

The lights in the room flickered. A few potions came crashing onto the floor.
"Dac, did you do it?" Philomena shouted.
"Nope." He got up and walked past the fallen potions.
"Hmm, well these are:
Hate potion,
elemental potion,
love potion,
plantenosris potion,
memory manipulation potion, and
elasticitic potion."
The light flickering continued.

"I—is that normal?" Ren took a step closer to Philomena.
"Not really." She kept looking at the lights.
I hope this stops soon.

"Must be Damian; he is in the training room with Shar." Dacoria smiled.
"Then let's join them." Philomena walked to the door, followed by Ren. The two stepped outside.

Dacoria stood behind, glaring at the lights. I thought there was someone else here too.
