Chapter 8:

Kaidas Husband

The Secret of the Flower Girl

On Wednesday it was once again time for dancing class, but this time I was excited for it. I hadn't told Kaida anything about what happened, not even that it went well or that we had met at all. So when I saw her I couldn't help but sport a big smile. Kaida of course knew what that meant.

„You rascal you. Did you get her? Tell me what happened boy.“

Instead of telling her I showed her my phone with the contact info of Sophia and I had added a bunch of hearts behind her name and Kaida didn't fail to see that.

„I'm impressed boy. Your plan actually worked. So what happened then?“ She seemed truly anxious to know how my little adventure went down.

„Well, I went to the shop on saturday and she wasn't there. When I thought it was all over, out of nowwhere she appeared and dragged me to a nearby park. There we confessed to each other and promised to go on a date this saturday. That's basically it.“

„You make it sound so easy boy.“ she said, seemingly more excited about the development than I was.

„And what about your date? What's the plan?“ she continued.

„I don't really know to be honest. We texted a bit about it, but nothing really came up. I want to make it something special, but I don't have a great idea.“

Kaida stopped and seemed to think about what great date spots she could recommend.

„So it's your first date with her.“ she started.

„It should be something fancy, right? For your special girl?“ she kept going.

„Maybe. I don't really know what she likes is the thing. I don't want to make it pretentious and have her hate it.“

Kaida kept nodding. Apparently she tried to channel her female intuition and make a great suggestion about what I was to do. Then she seemed to channel a brainwave and snapped her finger.

„I got it boy. That's what you ought to do.“ And she wore her devilish smile again.

„A-And what is it?“ I was scared about the answer.

„Oh, don't worry boy. I don't want to ruin you. I just thought of a cute place you can take her.“

I was relived. For the moment.

„And what is it then?“

„It's a small cafe a bit on the outside of Tokyo. A bit of a ride by train, but I guess that's no problem for you two lovebirds. But anyway, they sell cakes and cupcakes and stuff that is decorated with flowers of all kind, it's super cute. So take her there boy. She will like it, trust me.“

That indeed sounded like a place she would enjoy.

„Thank you Kaida, that really sounds like a lovely place. Can you send me the details?“

„Of course, you will like it.“

After that we started our dancing routines and afterwards we once again sat outside the bulding, but not saying much this time, after Kaida sent me the adress of the cafe and I looked at some pictures online that indeed made it look very appealing. Then her husband arrived. Kaida went to the car, but instead of getting in she was telling her husband that she forgot something and went back into the building. To my surprise her husband actually left the car and leaned against it, facing me directly. He was a very proper man, wearing a shirt and tie even in his free time and he was perfectly groomed.

„I don't think we ever talked to each other.“ was his greeting.

„No, I don't think we have. I've heard a lot about you though Mr. Kobayashi,“

„Call me Ren please.“

„Okay, Ren. Nice to meet you.“ He seemed friendly enough and I was happy to finally meet him.

„I heard a lot about you as well lately Sato. That's why I wanted to get to know actually.“

„I hope you don't think there is anything going on between me and Kaida.“ I said it in jest, but I wasn't completely sure that he wasn't thinking it as well. But after I said it he laughed and it didn't sound forced.

„Don't worry Sato. I don't think anything like that. You know, I wouldn't trust Kaida to make lunch without setting the kitchen ablaze, but in these things I trust her completely.“

„I'm glad. I can imagine Kaida setting the kitchen on fire though to be honest.“ Now we were both laughing.

„But Kaida still talked about you a lot lately and that made me take note, as she normally never does so. Seemingly your romantic exploits made her remember a lot of things.“

„That's what she told me as well. She told me about you trying to get her to be your partner. No details though.“ I didn't know whether I went to far just now, but it felt right to say it.

„Oh yes, that was quite something. Also a very long time ago. 30 years in fact. Wev've been married for 25 years soon. Pretty crazy to think about.“

It was indeed a very long time. Just as long as I had been on this earth. Would I be with Sophia in 25 years? Would we be married? It was too far fetched to really think about it at this point.

„It's nice to see someone making it work for so long.“

„Yeah, it's a lot of work as well. But it's all worth it. That's the thing.“

At that moment Kaida was coming back, looking surprised upon the scene she was witnessing.

„Oh, look at that. The boy and the other boy getting to know each other. Whatever next.“

„I was just telling him how much work you are Kaida.“

„Oh, shut up. You are a real nasty piece of work yourself you know.“ They were bickering, but it was obvious that it was between two people who loved and trusted each other a lot.

„Well then Sato, it was nice talking to you. Now I have to spend the rest of the night appeasing my long suffering wife, so good night.“

„Good night boy, I will make him pay later.“

„Good night, don't overdo it Kaida.“

„I will, trust me.“ And then they were off.
