Chapter 1:

Flurryhearth

Heart’s Shadow

Flashback

I was named after my mother Flurryheart. I was born a Pegasus like my grandmother before me. Thanks to her teaching I was well adapt at flying. Because of her I also was very talented in love magic. I was no unicorn, but I was good with potions. Aunt Twilight had been my teacher. I didn't make love potions, but potions that helped ponies relationships. With every ponies permission, I could give out potions of communication, or beauty for example. Local couples counselors found my potions, quite helpful. Though I always felt my real talent was matchmaking. I always seem to have a knack for knowing who was fated to be with who. That was how I had gotten my cutie mark. That's why finding out a certain pony had a crush on me was so surprising. She had been using her horn to levitate a book in front of her. She reminded me a bit of Aunt Twilight when I first saw her. She had bumped right into me. Her book fell.

"Hey! Oh, hi Prince Flurryhearth."

"Flurryhearth is fine." I helped her get to her hooves. "Your Coldfront aren't you?"

"Yes." She answered blinking in surprise.

"I heard Sunburst had tutored you." I say.

"Yes he was a great help to my research. That's why I came here. From the Solar Empire you see. Sunburst had helped me get access to your beautiful royal library. I'd actually worked at the library down the road before dedicating myself to my own personal research projects." Much like Aunt Twilight then. Something about the air about her reminded me of Trixie though.

"Wow. You must be really smart." I say.

"I certainly like to think so." She says. We became friends after that. Heart and mind. It was only after she saved my life I realized I had feelings for her too.

It was snowing hard outside the magical barrier produced by the Crystal Heart. Coldfront loved the snow. A guard ran past the doorway of my room. It soon after I saw them, a the purple shield rose to envelope the Empire.

"What's going on?" I ask as two guards enter.

"The Princess has requested your presence Prince Flurryhearth." One crystal guard speaks.

"What's going on mom?" I turn to my mother Princess Flurryheart, but it is Princess Cadence who speaks.

"The Lunar Republic has invaded." Her voice firm, she rises from her throne to her full height, wings outstretched. I can't hide my bewilderment.

"Invaded?!" I ask. Cadence's eyes are calm, but her face grim with certainty. My mother answers.

"Yes. There where traitors amongst our guards, and a portion of the army has gotten though before Shining Armor had gotten his shield spell up." Shining Armor standing near Cadence on the crystal steps, horn's magic fizzes out before lighting up again. I can see it blurry though the crystal roof, and clear though the many windows. The violet shield blinks in and out of existence. The it's back in place.

"Sorry. I think- I think Princess Luna is amongst them. I can only shield from an alicorn's magic for long." Cadence walks down a few steps to her husband.

"My love will give you strength." Their horns met.

"I sent word to Princess Twilight in the hopes she can bring reinforcements in time." My mother speaks again.

"I hope so." Cadence answers. Her voice optimistic, and worried.

"She will be." Shining Armor says with firm finality. Coldfront who had been standing in the doorway with Sunburst to give my family space trots forward suddenly.

"We should evacuate the royal family." She announces.

It's Cadence who speaks. "No we're safest here." She speaks sense. After all the Crystal Heart is here. Shining Amor interrupts my thoughts.

"There's a tear in my shield!" Flurryheart, my mother rushed forward towards Cadence.

"Mom, let me join the fight." Her voice is filled with passion. So is Cadence's when she speaks.

"No!" One trying to protect the subjects, the other trying to protect her daughter. My mom pauses. A million emotions crosses her face. Then she takes flight.

"Flurryheart!" Cadence calls out. Flurryheart drives for the window. Then she disappears in a blink. I gallop to the window, and look down at the scene below. Flashes of magic, and moonlight light the battle. Blood on crystal streets. I don't think I has ever seen so much. My grandfather taught me to fight, but I had never seen anything like this before in my life. Ponies in uniforms. Amor, and armed with weapons trying to get though our guards. I saw two crystal ponies duck into their homes. My mother appeared in flight. A blast of Alicorn magic shooting from her horn. A javelin hit her wing. I gasped watching her go down. I lost sight of her in a crown of darkly dressed Lunar soldiers. Then I saw her. I would know that blue coat anywhere. It was one of Aunt Twilight's old friends. This was the Solar/Lunar war. The only war that could tear apart friendships. That could tear apart families. The war that proved that Rainbow's loyalty was first and foremost to the Princess. Princess Luna. My vision spun. I could just make out Shining Armor shouting orders to guards. Coldfront ran to me. Cadence was saying something. That's when they broke though. I thought about when this very castle was attacked by King Sombra. Not more could The Elements of Harmony come to save us now. It was Princess Luna who entered first, Rainbow Dash by her side. Lunar guards rushed in behind her. Spells flew. Our guards rushed to meet them. Luna flew forward. Alicorn magic hit my grandmother square in the chest, knocking her off her hooves. Her mane fanned out across the throne room floor.

"No!" Roared my grandfather. He galloped towards her. "Cadence!" He helped her to her hooves. She swayed. His shield surrounded them. Cadence's spell met Luna's.

"Come on." Coldfront urged me. No I couldn't leave. Couldn't abandon my family, subjects, my home. Cadence's eyes met mine for a moment. She only said one word to me.

"Go." Spells blinded me. But I galloped, Coldfront leading the way. I looked back once. Watching my grandparents. I could hear crystal start to crack. We galloped though halls, though halls, though doorways. When went though the side castle entrance.

"We have to get passed the barrier." Coldfront says over the wind. The barrier. Cast by the Crystal Heart powered by love, and light. We dashed for it. It was only when Coldfront cast an ice spell at a pegasus that I realized she was the only reason we had gotten this far. We were so close. I picked her up. For a moment, I thought she would protest, but then she relaxed. I flew through the barrier right into the unforgiving storm. We crashed into the snow. We were a few yards from the Kingdom now. I thought I saw something orange in the distance. Then to my horror the Kingdom, and my castle lowered into the ice. No! I walked back towards it. Coldfront bit my tail stopping me. She looked at me with her mysterious, cold blue eyes. I looked at her.

"Come on. This way. I know were we can hide."
