Chapter 25:

The diplomat

Our Town in another world

As she sat in the car, Muki looked ready to burst a vein as she stared at her tablet. "Are you fucking shitting me!? There's more of them, and they just fucked up the southernmost shotengai!?"

"Madam?" Jenna nervously asked.

"We got problems. Two more elves appeared, and based off the footage I'm seeing, they're not just OP, but assholes that do as they please. And of course, just as that happens, ANOTHER elf shows up!"

"There's three new elves?"

"Yeah. The OP ones left, but this new one's still trembling at the north end."

"We're not too far from there, shall we?"

"Might as well, but stay on guard. If this one's like the other two, there'll be trouble."

...

The green-haired elf looked up as the crowd of humans staring at her began to part, clearing way for Muki and Jenna.

"And what's your business here?" Muki asked as Jenna cracked her knuckles.

"Hiii! I don't know! I'm trying to get to Buvaria and just stumbled into this town! I have no idea why two humans fell from the sky at me! Please don't kill me!" the elf cried.

"Who are you?"

"M- Mizata. I'm a diplomat from Evendale."

"The hell's that?"

"T- To the north near the white woods, there lies the great elven city of Evendale. Many elves populate the world, but Evendale has always been the largest elf settlement for Xillenia."

"'Xillenia'? You mean millennia, like a thousand years?"

"Years? What is that?"

Muki clicked her tongue and began walking away. "Jenna, stay here and keep an eye on her. I'm going to go fetch that damn dwarf bear to translate."

"Dwarf bear? There's a dwear here!? Please take me to them!" Mizata pleaded.

"Can you use magic?"

"Oh of course! My wind magic is hailed as some of the strongest-"

"Don't use it."

"Y- Yes."

Mizata nervously followed the two to the car, getting in as she was told to and not bothering to ask questions even though she had plenty. Muki and Jenna on the other hand were on high alert, as they rode with Mizata to the university.

The drive ultimately ended up being uneventful despite it's awkwardness, but just because the group reached their destination, didn't mean the awkwardness was over. Silence ensured once more as Muki and Jenna led Mizata to Sana's lab.

"What's going on? Am I going to get punished? She seems so disappointed in me," Mizata dejectedly thought.

Optimism was about to find it's way to her though as she was led into the lab and introduced to Sana, Rosa, and DaVinci.

"Ohoho? Are you beginning to trust me?" DaVinci grinned at Muki.

"No, but you seem to have some grasp on converting your metrics to ours, so I thought we'd have you here to deal with her," Muki snarled.

"Hmm, that emerald headband and long ears... An eventyde elf, are you not?"

"Yes. I'm Mizata, diplomat of Evendale. I was tasked by the politicos of Evendale to forge a peace arrangement with Buvaria, but as you likely know, the journey from Evendale to Buvaria is a treacherous and draining one. I know not if the elders simply seek to eliminate me and have no such intention of mending relations with Buvaria."

"What's this about diplomatic relations?" a voice asked.

Muki grimaced in annoyance as she turned to notice Machiko and Ikebukuro entering the lab. "Why are you here?"

"I called her over," Sana growled.

"And is that any way to greet me after you've been avoiding me for so long!?" Maciko glared as she stared down Muki.

"Congratulations on your marriage or whatever. I hate it."

"I will deal with you later. For now, diplomacy with those that live in this world is our highest priority."

A scowl began to form on Mizata's face as she locked eyes with Ikebukuro. "You... You're an elf, but your head is shaved... your eyebrows and eyelashes too... Just what sin did you commit?"

"Oh, I just decided to join my wife in baldness. No betrayal, though I guess my tribe will take the act of me falling in love with this woman as such an act," Ikebukuro smiled.

"And your tribe?"

"Stanpelegrino."

Mizato glared in silence for a few seconds before shaking her head and turning her attention to Machiko. "And who are you, bald woman?"

"Machiko Fuukuro, the mayor of this town, though in a sense I could be more of a prime minister given I'm now the highest authority in the land," Machiko stated.

Mizata's eyes bulged as sweat began to pour down her face. "F- FORGIVE MY RUDENESS!"

"Chill, chill. You look like you're exhausted, so take a rest, shower too, before you sort out your thoughts. Diplomacy gets nowhere if the diplomat's an exhausted wreck."

"There's a hotel nearby we can check you into. Oh, but do you have currency?" Sana asked.

"Current c?"

"Drachma," DaVinci clarified.

Mizata nodded and reached into her pouch, pulling out a pouch of smooth white pebbles. "These are drachma, the rocks found only in the pure-water stream of the mountains of Eventyde. The rocks have many uses, notably in fashion and beauty. I know human cities tend to use coins of metal, but us eventyde elves are naturalists and prefer not to scar the earth for the metal to make them, unlike the dwarves. This tends to be why we're at odds with each other." ]

"You're a green girl? Me too! Green eco-friendly policy is one of my core tenets, but compared to you, I probably look like a smog spewing polluter," Machiko smiled.

"No, no, no! It's merely a difference in culture! Um..."

"Get some rest. Don't worry about the payment as I'll handle it for the time being. Once you're rested though, we'll have a proper dinner and discussion. Considering how much elves have done for this city, I'd love to forge a formal relationship with it's capitol."

"I- I had no idea there was a human city here, so my apologies for not being prepared. But once I am rejuvenated, I will begin talks with you formally as diplomat of Evendale before heading to Buvaria."

"And I'd also like to have talks with your people... DaVinci was it?"

"I'm no diplomat, in fact most of us dwarves just live wherever without really forming towns, save for Buvaria. But many know me well in this world, so I can act as a proper bridge between you and many," DaVinci nodded.

"I'm liking those words. So, how about we all rest up, and then meet up again for talks."

"That reminds me, how long do days last here?" Muki asked.

"In your metrics, the sun is up for 72 hours at a given time, while the moon just 12 hours."

"72 hour days and 12 hour nights!? Ugh, this world is such a pain."
