Chapter 30:
Laurels Journey
Charlotte saw a massive pink heart-shaped explosion in the distance.
After that.
Charlotte cried out in pain.
It ended with a blade of wind tearing through her flesh.
Charlotte knew she could never beat the witch in front of her.
“I don’t really care about the exam you see, I’m simply here to kill a certain someone, and rectify a mistake I made.”
Alice had revealed her true nature and power to charlotte. She knew the power difference between them was wide but for it to be this great was downright depressing. Alice was in a league far above A grade. Alice was an S grade witch.
That simple fact made it impossible for Charlotte to even picture victory. Her only option was to run but her pride wouldn’t let her.
That and they were surrounded by trees—trees that would normally make running easy but against an S grade witch running and hiding meant nothing. The usually powerful Charlotte was nothing but hapless prey in her presence.
Charlotte steeled herself. “Dammit!”
She depleted all her magic defending Alice’s attacks.
Dying was a scary thought, still, her heart was serene as she stared down the attack Alice had just unleashed. An attack that would end her life in a moment.
Charlotte did not even have the energy to cry or scream.
“Don’t go picking on my little sister!”
The woman truly had no shame, showing up at a time like this.
Charlotte would have rather died than be saved by her of all people.
“You did this to my adorable little sister!? How dare you!? You made her cry!?” she shouted as she glared at Alice.
She’s got a lot of nerve, Charlotte thought.
Almost immediately, Everlyne used every ounce of magic she had to heal Charlotte’s injuries.
“W-will you…get lost I don’t need your help,” Charlotte said.
If Everlyne tried to fight Alice, she would die, and Charlotte realized this. There was no possible way for anyone to beat an S grade witch.
Everlyne covered her younger sister in a nearly unbreakable barrier.
“I’ll handle this. You just rest here, ok?”
“Take this more seriously, please?! I don’t need help from a mongrel!”
A part of Charlotte genuinely didn’t want help from her sister.
“Stop talking! A good witch is one who uses everything and anything to their advantage! If my love for you is a weakness, then exploit it! Or at the very least shut up and watch!” For the first time, Everlyne couldn’t help but raise her voice and lecture Charlotte.
Alice sighed.
“Charlotte always was such a whiny little sister.”
“Yup.” Everlyne nodded.
“Just so you know, my goal has nothing to do with passing the exam. I couldn’t careless about becoming an official witch.”
“Are you done?” Everlyne asked, with a glare. To her, whatever motives drove Alice didn’t matter. All that mattered was that she had hurt Charlotte, and that made her an enemy.
“I really am a simple-minded person.” Alice said to herself.
From the moment her first strike did no damage, Everlyne knew this would be a long fight. Witches had two way’s of defending and attacking. One was to cast defensive spells and attacking spells. The other was to cover themselves in a thick layer of magic, a barrier that could enhance and protect their bodies. For someone with endless magic like Alice, this meant destroying the barrier was practically impossible. A witch could switch to the magic barrier in less than a fraction of a second.
This did not mean Alice was unbeatable. A witch could only not attack and defend at the same time. While Everlyne’s telekinesis allowed her to attack, defend and repel attacks all at the same tim[H1] [H2] e.
This meant that against an S grade witch the only way to do damage was to aim for a moment when they attack.
After an intense exchange, Everlyne and Alice stood at a distance from each other.
Everlyne was looking for an opening, hoping not to make any unnecessary errors, while Alice looked on with nothing but pure confidence.
Neither of them spoke a word. They simply allowed their immense power to do the talking.
From the academy, the teachers and students couldn’t believe their eyes.
Those two were beyond human comprehension as they enjoyed a lively smashing context that practically rewrote the maps of the forest, their contest, better suited for monsters, was a display that practically made those watching wet themselves. They both swung at each other, like two monsters in battle.
Alice gained the upper hand.
Her attacks began to penetrate Everlyne’s telekinetic barrier, running through her entire body and affecting all her physical functions.
“You’re done.”
Alice unleashed a massive fireball.
Normally this attack would be easy to evade, however.
Everlyne had no choice but to stop this attack, if she didn’t, the raging fire would incinerate everything below it including Charlotte.
With a mighty shout, she raised both her arms and caught the supernova.
Yes, caught it.
Using every ounce of power she had Everlyne tossed the ball of fire into space.
