Chapter 5:

The day I learn about the new place

Powerless soul reincarnated to a unblessed body

My aunt took me in a carriage, the carriage went straight to town and it only took 2 hours to get to her place. In a carriage, she didn't talk anything to me.

Mom never took me to the town so this is the first time I came here. She let me play in the garden, sometime, I went to the forest near my house and she didn't forbid it, but she never let me go to the town, I don't know why, I guess she just didn't like crowded place. Even though I like to brag that I'll research more about this world, the truth is that most of the time I just enjoy life with my mom, and if Mom said she didn't want me to go to the town, I will do what she wants. So in terms of my knowledge of this world, it's probably on par with a 10 year old.

But I have to admit that the streets here are really crowded, much more bustling than in the countryside. There are markets, shops, people coming and going, bustling and noisy, laughter mixed with calls to sell goods, it's really a bunch of mixed noises that make people tired, I understand why my mother doesn't like to go to town.

The carriage stopped in front of my aunt's house. It was a small house, probably much smaller than my mother's. My aunt took me inside and helped me put my luggage away, but still didn't say a word to me. I thought she must be the type of person who doesn't like to talk. My aunt took my luggage to a room, perhaps this would be my room from now on. The room was much smaller than my previous room, there was only a bed in the room, a table and chair to sit on to write or work, that was all the furniture in this room.

"Your name is Edna, right?"

This is the first time she talks to me. Her voice was hoarse and rough, not quite like a woman's voice.

"Yes, madam, nice to meet you."

"My name is Avis. Your parents have told you, right? From now on, you will live here with me. I will prepare 3 meals a day for you and there is a room for you. You can do everything you want. I know you will miss your Mom, but there is nothing I can't do now. From now on, you won't be able to see your mother often anymore. Maybe your mother will come to visit, but I don't know when. If you miss her too much, just cry freely. I heard your mother say that you like reading books, so come to my room and borrow books to read. But do you know the reason why you have to move here to live with me?"

"I know madam, because I can't use magic."

"You don't have to call me 'madam', just call me Avis or aunt Avis if you want. And I can't use magic too, just like you. You will have to face the fact that life without magic is quite difficult, finding a job is very difficult and also, as I must say frankly, discrimination and prejudice against people without magic does exist. Even though you are only 10 years old and you may not understand everything, I will still tell you in advance. But I will try to support you as much as possible, if you need anything, just tell me."

Well, discrimination and prejudice always exist against minority groups. If things are going to be like this, then I guess I'll just have to accept it. Luckily, this aunt seems to be a good person.

"Yes, aunt Avis, I understand"

"Very well, in 2 months you will be enrolled in a school in the area. I also studied there, as you know, there is no special school for people who can't use magic, so you still have to go to regular school. If there is any problem at school, just tell me. Get some rest, dinner is at 7."

After saying that, she closed the door and left me alone in the room. Even though she was a good person, she seemed clumsy when it came to dealing with children. I lay down on the bed, feeling my eyelids heavy, wondering where my life would go from here. I couldn't say I was at ease, because with a body that couldn't use magic, what kind of job could I find? I read in a book before that people without magic had a hard time finding a job because no one wanted to hire someone with low productivity, and if I couldn't even find a job, I didn't know what my life would be like in the future. I wondered what kind of job my aunt, who didn't have magic, would do.

Time passed quickly, living with her wasn't so bad. Even though she was a bit distant and awkward, she would always help if needed. I also learned that she did some work related to handicrafts, it seemed like she had to work very hard to get hired and maintain that job until now. She said that her boss didn't treat her well, the salary was quite low, but she still had to do this job because this was almost the only job that people without magic could do well.

"When I was a little, I want to be a Caballarius"

"A Caballarius? An army that protects people from the Binge?"

"You know a lot. Yes, that was my dream when I was little, actually it still is now, looking at the Caballarius team is so cool. One time they paraded past this neighborhood, I was a little kid then, your dad and I ran out to watch, ever since then I've been dreaming of becoming a Caballarian. But the truth is, I can't be a part of the Caballarius team. Without magic it's hard to find a job."

"So people without magic can't be come a Caballarius?"

"It's very difficult, if you want to become a Caballarian you will have to take a test when you are 13 years old, after passing you will be trained. But the training is very harsh, more than half of those who pass will give up halfway through the training. Caballarians focus on developing their ability to use magic, and also focus on strengthening their physical body. More special than other Magus, they are Caballarians who are proficient in strengthening the body, so it can be said that they will be taught quite a lot about the human body, but they will not be taught how to heal, the small groups of the Caballarius team will recruit Healers from outside when doing missions, after all, the number of Healers is small, studying and becoming a certified Healer is already difficult."

She said in a regretful tone. For some reason, I wanted to comfort her at that moment, but instead of comforting her as usual, an idea suddenly came to me.

"What if I want to become a Caballarian? Can I do that?"

She was surprised by my words. But then her face softened.

"Just try your best, do whatever you wanna do. I will support you to the best of my ability. If you pass, great. If not, that's okay too."

I know she's just trying to encourage me, after all, it's not a good thing to break the dreams of a 10 year old. But I'm not joking, I really want to do it, the fact that this body doesn't have magic is probably my fault, the fact that this body will probably have to live a miserable life of hiding for the rest of its life is probably also my fault. But I think, I can do something, at least let me try to gain a place in this society, even if I'm someone who can't use magic.
