Chapter 2:

A Day in the Life of a Prisoner in Another World

Kusunoki Naoki: Swordsman in Another World

A couple of days had passed since the incident. At least, I think it’s been a couple of days. There are no clocks to tell time nor could I really tell if the sun had set or risen. I’m completely isolated.

Being brought to a prison cell was definitely not what I expected my first experience in another world would be like. That’s right! I’m in another world. I don’t know how it happened, but this definitely isn’t Japan or any other country that I know of. I didn’t seem to time travel as well, though slavery was a thing of the past, elves aren’t real.

My stomach growled. I haven’t eaten for a while. It seems like my elven captors have no compassion for prisoners. Doesn’t something like the Geneva Convention exist in this world? Just another reason why I’m not on Earth.

I lay on the ground, cold, thinking to myself if I could’ve done anything to change this outcome. I think back on that time when the beautiful elven girl pointed her sword at my throat.

As she winds her sword to strike me, another elf came to my rescue, at least that’s what I think he did. I couldn’t understand their language. At first, I had assumed that it’s some sort of European language but after considering the “other world” theory, they’re probably speaking Elvish, something that’s also not real on Earth so I couldn’t associate the language with what I already know.

The other elf, who I quickly identified as a male with his broader shoulders, although he also has his hair long like the girl, stopped his “friend” from killing me. They had a back-and-forth that I couldn’t understand but ultimately, it seems my savior won the argument as she pulled back her sword and retreated deeper into the woods.

I told my elf savior thanks but before I could get a response, something was placed on my head that restricted my vision and air flow, making it hard to breathe. Later on, I found out that it was a burlap sack, the same ones they used in kidnappings.

I hear bushes rustling nearby as my hands was bounded yet again by rope along with my legs. I feel my wounds throb once again as the bullet wound that I have on my right shoulder made me scream in pain.

They didn’t seem to care what happened to me as they simply dragged me for an amount of time until we stopped. And that’s about what happened ever since I got here. I don’t even have an idea if they stopped for camp or if I’m at an elven village. I could only hope that I wasn’t forgotten in some random prison cell to rot.

Still fully bounded and the sack still on my head, I end up doing the only thing I could do, wallow in my own despair. I start sobbing as I think of happy memories from back home. I miss my parents. I miss my friends. I still have no idea what happened with Ako and the damaging post she allegedly made about me but I do not believe it! Not one bit. I wish I could’ve resolved that somehow.

I miss food. I miss my bed. I miss playing games. I miss everything.

I continue to cry.

In the distance, I hear muffled voices as footsteps approach where I am at. Perhaps it’s due to being unable to see that it enhanced my sense of hearing? I’m not sure but I guess I’ll be having company.

A creak of a door could be heard as a masculine voice said unfamiliar words.

My body gets lifted up, at least to a sitting position. I gasp for air as the pain from my shoulder becomes unbearable. They removed the sack covering my head, blinding my eyes from the sudden light coming from outside while also feeling the touch of damp air on my face. They kept the bounds on though. Unfortunate.

A figure approaches and kneels in front of me. My eyes, still getting used to the light, aren’t able to see well yet. I have to wait for it to settle. The figure starts talking to me, a man, but still, I cannot understand it.

The man kept on speaking to me; I assume he’s asking me questions. That’s the only reason why someone would talk to me right now, if I’m being honest.

Still, he kept on doing it. My eyes are starting to get used to the light and the surroundings. My eyesight adjusted until I was able to see the person in front of me. It’s the same guy from a couple of days ago! The same one who saved me from the elf girl.

Behind him is a figure of a person who’s definitely crossing their arms as they lean their back on the wall. I look at this person intently and to my unfortunate surprise, it’s none other than my elven executioner. The same elf girl who pointed her swords at me.

My body stiffened up, afraid that she’d hurt me again. I can only hope that with the presence of this elvish man, I would be safe from danger. That wasn’t the case at all as it appears that I assumed wrong.

The elf man didn’t stop the girl from killing me to save me. He did it to get answers out of me. But I do not know the questions so he became aggressive, almost desperate to get something out of me.

He’d start to punch my face whenever I don’t tell him what he wants. I keep on telling him I’m sorry and that I don’t understand, to no avail. Everything hurts; my face, my body, my dignity.

The beatings never seem to end until another figure came into the room. It’s another elvish man. He started shouting at the one beating me which led him to stop and step away. The elvish man knelt beside me, inspecting my body. I could only give a weak look in return.

He started speaking to me in his language. I didn’t understand the words that came out of his mouth but I could feel his good intentions. “I’m here to help you.” That’s what I believe he’s telling me.

Relief washed over me, so much so, that I begin to lose consciousness. It’s going to be fine… I just want… to rest my eyes… for a bit. I’ll wake up…

.

.

I hear the gleeful laughter of children in the distance. Such joyous laughter. I remember wanting to get married and having children at some point but I never got to. With Emily doing… you know… Anyway, I don’t want to think about that right now.

I slowly opened my eyes. Light shined directly on my eyes making me flinch and turn to shade. I only notice now that I was sleeping on a bed that’s as soft as cotton. It felt really nice.

As I feel the bed with my hands, I notice that the handcuffs are still on my wrists although the chain that connects it has been cut quite cleanly, as a matter of fact. The rope that bounded my hands and feet are now gone, although it did seem to have left a mark.

The rest of my body seemed to have recovered quite well. The bullet that was lodged in my right shoulder isn’t there anymore and the wounds have all healed up. There aren’t any bruises in sight as well. Weird. You’d think I’d get a few with the kind of beating that I got.

Aside from that, the place that I am in currently is definitely not the same as the one before. I sit on the bed and inspected the unfamiliar room. The most eye-catching object is definitely the walls. It’s made out of wood and has these seemingly carefully-crafted designs etched on it. There’s also a dresser, a table, and chair, all of which are also made out of wood and have those same etchings as the wall.

I further survey the room and recognize nothing else of note. That’s right! There’re those children’s laughter I heard earlier, but where did it come from? It started to become warm as I feel the sweat form on my hands. It made me realize the sunlight that’s entering the room.

Behind me is a window that has a view of the outside world. As my eyesight adjusts to the sunlit, outside world, I am graced by the most magnificent view I have ever seen in my entire life.

I stood atop of everything in the forest, towering over all the little people below. Several massive trees are seen at the distance, although not as massive as the one I’m in. Looking closely, I notice windows like the one I’m looking through in these trees. Perhaps the trees are houses?

Still, this sight is amazing! It’s forests as far as the eye can see surrounded by a mountain range, and in the far distance, I can make out a couple of tall, man-made buildings. The first thing that came to mind were the men in full armor forcibly taking away those elves. Will I find those people there? That’s not a comforting thought.

My focus shifts towards the door at the corner of the room as I hear gentle knocking coming from behind it. It opened slowly.

“Y-you’re…”
