Chapter 2:

meet the new world

Master of none

“ I’m the new master of none? What is that, and why are you so sure I’m the new master of none?” I was very surprised at the news. I took a few steps backwards purely out of shock. “ The master of one is the hero’s lowly servant… I mean, sidekick more of a secondary fighter hero B to hero A, you know. Ms.Orzala says nervously. “ What? I didn’t come from another world just to be a sidekick, did I?” This whole conversation was just blowing my mind. “ Well, it’s time to get to class, try your best! Oh, and you can call me Sabriya since you're the new master of none.” She said, shoving me out of the room. I took a look at the map I got of campus and made my way to the Dojo for my swordsmanship class. When I walked in the room, I saw Chacham sparring with another kid from our class. At Netzach, they spar with real swords to make sure nobody dies; they coat the students in light magic; whoever gets through the other’s defenses first wins. Chacham pulls his front foot back as his opponent attacks using the force of his blow to knock him off balance, then effortlessly cuts the back of the light shield, giving him the win. I looked around for a sword of my own so I could start practicing. “ Hey, los, I mean um, foreigner use my blade, it was made for practice, in fact, I just want to see you fail so do it already,” Chacham said, walking over to me. He shoved the sword into my chest with a cocky grin on his face, pushing up his glasses. “ You’ll never beat me,” Chacham said, walking to the sidelines to watch. Mr. Dror covered me in the light shield, then scanned the crowd for an opponent. “ I’ll do it, Sir, if you don’t mind seeing the destruction that is?” A kid around my age walked up confidently. He had fiery red hair and blazing orange eyes. “ Very well, Gen, you’ll be facing Ziv.” Mr.Dror counted down with his finger from three. As his fingers drew in, he drew a whistle to his mouth, and as his count hit zero, the whistle sounded out, indicating we could fight. I know it’s not good to judge people by the way they look, but I could tell how he’d fight just by looking at him. The fiery red hair not being styled meant obviously he’d rush in. As he gets closer, I pick up the sword, drawing it behind me, ready to counter his attack. He pushes forward his right foot, so I step my left foot into his inner thigh and slice him right across the chest. “ End of match! The winner is…” The room was dead silent. I looked around the room, and everyone was shocked. Even Chacham's jaw was practically on the floor. “Defeating our top seat Gen Ryoushou!” Mr. Dror says solemnly. “ How’d you do that… you’re nothing but a slacker!” Chacham walked up to me, and I couldn’t tell if he was mad, happy, or sad. “ Not bad, noob.” Afela placed her hand on my shoulder and smiled hollowly. “ Oh, thanks, here’s your sword back, a little too heavy for my liking though,” I said, putting Chacham’s sword back in its sheath and handing it to him. “ With that last match, it’s time for lunch, Chacham, Afela, and Gen. You all will sit in my room and eat your lunch. What a pain.” Mr.Dror escorted us back to his room, looking more annoyed than all 3 of us combined. “ You all will be provided lunch, so don’t leave the room for any reason. The bathroom is right there, use it before you go into isolation!” He said coarsely. We were all escorted off to his room like criminals. The only things missing were the handcuffs and jumpsuits. “ Melamed, what’s for lunch? I'm so hungry I could eat a jerk or Gen,” Afela said with saliva running down her face. “ First, clean your face off, second, we have leftover falafel’s Sabriya, I mean the dean thought we should have a staff party, and they're only three days old, you’ll be fine.” Mr.Dror said that last part a little maliciously, almost like he was praying for us to get sick. The door slammed shut, and we sat there staring at our lukewarm, old falafels. “ So, um, how are the magic classes?” I asked curiously. “ Joyful!” Chacham says smiling “ Death and destruction,” Afela says grimly “ Oh, those are different um experiences… I guess it depends on the teacher, well, both of them will be teaching me, so I guess I’ll learn for myself… Thanks for the feedback.” I look down awkwardly. I look around at Chacham and Afela poking around they're food; they’re not really eating it. “ What’s wrong, guys? Not hungry?” I asked cautiously to eat my own food now, despite how hungry I was. “ Don’t tell me you don’t know transfer…here at Netzach academy, every student until you came along is born from a noble family. For example, I’m from the Beit Yamir house, and Afela is from the Beit Lailan.” Chacham said with an audible face palm.“ Our food is usually fish with some rice and carrots,” Afela added, staring daggers into her falafel. I ate my falafel, and it was horrible, lukewarm, old, and a little stale. “ Come on, guys, you need to eat something. It's not that good, but it’s food, right?” I throw my container in the setup tub for the students in detention. “ Let’s go, Chacham, you big baby.” Afela shoved her falafel down, leaving just Chacham. “ Fine, I guess… first though.” Chacham used his water magic to freeze the Falafel, then extracted the liquids to heat them up before putting them back in. “ What was that!? Why is it warm now?” I ran back up the stairs in awe. “ All I did was condense the water, making it heat up basic water magic, really.” Chacham flexes a little by forming a water ball that he turns into an ice knife. “ Oh, cool, do you use a spell? Is it based on concentration?” I asked, looking down at my hands, feeling something resonate with my body. My palms glow with the same blue as the puddle I was summoned through. I see a screen appear before my eyes that reads ‘ Use Water Ball selected.’ Just then, a small ball of water appeared over my wrist. “ You use water magic, too Transfer…” Chacham started a water ball of his own. “ I don’t have water magic, but I’d like to join this competition.” Afela started a small ball of darkness, and our individual spells all grew slightly until they touched. I watched the collision, scared we might have done something dangerous. We all flinched as a hydra-like figure came out of the circle. ‘ New spell saved, Mayfelah. Requires friends Afela and Chacham to activate.’ “ Dispel it immediately!” Mr.Dror yelled at us as he walked into the room. We slowly moved our hands further and further away until we individually disabled our spells. “ You three might just be special… nonetheless, save all magic for magic practice. I'll build time into your schedules for combo spells since you have such good chemistry together.” Mr.Dror said with a hint of sarcasm, although we could tell he meant every word. “ Is detention over?” Afela asked dryly. “ Yeah, head to your magic lessons, Gen, you get to choose which element you want to practice. I’d recommend sticking with either Afela or Chacham for today, though.” Mr. Dror asked. “ Come with me, Gen, it’ll be plenty disturbing,” Afela said with a sly grin on her face. “ Go with her. I don't want you in my magic class, Transfer.” Chacham said, coarsely walking away. “ It’s settled then, Gen, you’ll go with Afela today and Chacham tomorrow.” Mr. Dror sat at his desk searching through his drawer. “ Oh! Dror, why is he accompanying us? People only have one magic type at most, and he’s shown a talent for water.” Afela asked, full of curiosity. “ He’s this generation's master of none according to the Dean. You two are also pretty special; only the top 5% of magic users can form a triple combo spell.” Mr. Dror says with a slight scoff. “ No way, Master of none!” Chacam exclaims, springing back. “ I knew you were special, Gen.” Afela pats me on the back. Mr. Dror cleared his throat. “ It is surprising for sure, but nevertheless, it’s time for class, so leave.” Mr. Dror wrapped himself in a blanket and closed his eyes as we all headed out of the room.
