Chapter 18:

Ice King of the North

Blades of the Shattered Chaplets

In a far frozen land, an elderly couple walked in the freezing snow and rain. On the brink of death, they trekked in hopes of finding anything that could help them survive. A male and female wolf walked towards the couple with a menacing look. The old man pulled out his sword to protect his wife. He was so weak however that he fell to one knee immediately after taking up his sword. The wolves ran and jumped at the men biting his arm off. The woman screamed and a figure approached them both from the right.

???: “Keep your head down!”

The wolves' heads were cut clean off and fell to the ground. The couple looked up, surprised at a young girl in front of them. She reached out her hand to help the couple get to their feet.

“I’m Isara. Nice to meet you guys.“

Thank yo…”

The man and woman’s heads fell to the ground as they began to speak. The girl opened her eyes wide in shock. She gathered her senses and turned her head as quickly as possible. A blade targeted her neck from behind.

‘Crap! I messed up! I’m gonna die!’ Blades clashed and a man with blue hair and blue eyes stood in front of the girl in less than a second. “Run!” he screamed out. The young girl turned around too quickly, falling flat faced into the snow. She got up and ran as fast as she could in the other direction.

Arata: “Now…What happened to our agreement, Masugo Aelig, Ice King of the North?”

Silence filled the air for a minute until a man with whitish blue hair walked in out from the snowy fog. His blue eyes matched the strands in his hair. He was encased in armor made of ice and a blue star looking diamond at the top of his armor. He wore a necklace of a blue blade and held an ice helmet at his side. The snow and fog suddenly disappeared in a circle just between the two men, but still surrounded the outside of them.

Aelig: “They crossed the border, Arata Sanji. I had free reign to kill them. Nobody is allowed near my castle. Isn’t that our agreement?”

Arata: “It was an old couple and a young girl, Aelig. What were they going to do to you? You’re a former Great Swordsman.”

“That’s not the point. This is precisely why I left my duties.” He sighed. “Masaru promised me that people would understand my beliefs if I joined that stupid organization, yet I still encounter fools. And now…he’s dead anyways. Oh, wait, you would know that, wouldn’t you?”

Arata: “Stop this nonsense.”

Aelig: “Have you come out here to lecture me about the past, Arata? If so, then please leave.”

Aelig turned around and began to walk back. Arata began to expel massive amounts of blue mana from his body, causing Aelig to turn back around to assert dominance.

“Oh? Is this what we are doing now?”

Aelig’s body lit up in white mana far greater than Arata’s. “Don’t think you can beat me with just resolve now, Arata, especially in my territory.”

Aelig lifted his left arm to the left and pulled a glowing white sword from out of nowhere and grinned at Arata with the intent to kill. The two stared at each other as Arata began to reach for his sword in his scabbard on his side. Aelig sighed, “Ahhh…I’m not in the mood for this right now.” His mana released and his sword disappeared. “I apologize Arata. I will evaluate their skill level next time they cross my border before I decide to kill. How’s that?”

Arata: “Keep up this stupid facade, Aleig. Masaru would be disappointed. Go play house in your isolated castle, idiot. There’s a reason you were chosen by Masaru and you tramped on his pride.”

Arata turned around and walked away. Before he was out of distance, his mana lit up the land many times bigger than Aelig’s. Aelig scoffed and screamed out, “Cocky bastard. Nobody cares anymore, Arata! Not even you! I’ll live how I want! Don’t pester me on what I want to do! And don’t ever speak Masaru’s name again you pig!”

He spit on the ground and walked back to his castle. “Not like I had the intent to kill you either.”
