Chapter 52:
The Hero Who Shouldn’t Exist
The battlefield was frozen.
The Sovereign of Silence stood at the heart of the broken cathedral, her veil drifting like smoke. Every breath she exhaled dimmed the world, erasing sound, color, even memory.
The girl pressed a hand to her chest, gasping. Her voice wouldn’t leave her throat. Even her heartbeat felt muffled, as if stolen.
And yet—something resisted.
The air trembled, like a storm straining to break through a dam. Cracks rippled across the marble floor, each one pulsing with silver light. The Sovereign narrowed her eyes.
“…He dares.”
The girl staggered backward. She didn’t understand. Only moments ago Kael had been swallowed by silence, his body dissolving into silver ash. He should have been gone. But now—the cracks in the floor were spreading outward, humming with chains she couldn’t see.
The Sovereign raised her hand. The air folded, and the cathedral walls disintegrated into dust. All that remained was her shadow stretching against the fractured ground.
“You should have vanished with the others,” she said softly. “But if you claw your way back—then I will erase you myself.”
The ground ruptured.
Chains erupted, lashing toward the sky. Bells rang—a sound so distorted it was almost pain. The girl dropped to her knees, clutching her ears. Yet through the agony, she felt it: Kael’s presence. Raw, burning, unrelenting.
Then she saw him.
A silhouette dragged itself out of the rift, bound in chains but moving as if he commanded them. His eyes burned with silver fire, each step heavier than thunder.
Kael had returned—no longer swallowed by silence, but carrying it like a mantle.
The girl’s breath hitched. “Kael…”
The Sovereign tilted her head, veil shifting, unreadable. “…You’ve changed.”
The chains around Kael pulsed once, rattling like a thousand tolls. He raised his head slowly, voice breaking through the muted air—hoarse, but undeniable.
“I told you…” His words cut, echoing across the still world.
“…You can’t erase me.”
The sky shuddered. For the first time, the Sovereign of Silence faltered.
