Chapter 53:
The Hero Who Shouldn’t Exist
The girl couldn’t breathe.
The figure standing before her was Kael… yet not. His body bore the scars of silence, fragments of ash still trailing from his skin. But the chains wrapped around him were alive, slithering like serpents of light and shadow.
They didn’t restrain him anymore.
They followed him.
Her lips trembled. “Kael… is that really you?”
He turned slightly, and for an instant, she saw the same eyes—the boy who had once shielded her, who had carried his burden without complaint. But behind them burned something else. Not hatred alone. Not vengeance alone. Something older. Heavier.
The Sovereign of Silence lowered her veil. It was the first time the girl had seen the faint curve of her lips—an expression caught between curiosity and disdain.
“Your soul should have unraveled,” the Sovereign whispered. “And yet you bind yourself tighter. Foolish child. Do you think chains make you strong?”
Kael’s answer was quiet, but it rolled across the broken cathedral like thunder.
“No. Chains don’t make me strong.”
He clenched his fist. Every shackle around his body rattled in unison, a sound so sharp it made the girl’s bones ache.
“They make me endure.”
The ground collapsed beneath him as the first chain lashed forward, shattering the silence.
The girl stumbled back, her heart racing. She couldn’t tell if Kael had returned as a savior… or something far more terrifying.
But one thing was certain.
The Sovereign of Silence no longer looked untouchable.
