Chapter 1:
Lost In Ruins: A Search For Meaning
"Finn! Wake up, Finn!" A voice called out, tinged with panic. Finn's eyes flickered open, recognition crossing his face as he saw who had woken him.
"You had another syncope episode." The voice stated, gently helping Finn off the ground.
"Thanks, Malachi. I didn't even realize." Finn said to his friend groggily, brushing dust off himself.
The bell suddenly rang overhead, making Finn's ears ring. They rushed off to their next class: Career and Technical Education. They made it just as their teacher was closing the door, who marked them as tardy. "Wait! Mrs. House, I know we were late, but we've got a reason for it!" Malachi quickly explained, watching as she marked on her clipboard.
"Doesn't matter, Malachi. Rules are rules. I expect to see you both after school."
"But-!"
"No buts," she said sternly, motioning for them to go to their seats before starting the lesson.
The lesson seemed to drag on forever, but Finn never noticed. He was too distracted by what he saw during his episode. It felt so real, so terrifying.
Before Mrs. House could even get halfway through the lesson, the announcement chime rang.
"Excuse me, students and staff, we are going on lockdown. I repeat, we are on lockdown," the principal's voice rang through the room, his voice tight with fear.
Everyone glanced at each other before they began to panic. Kids ran around to find hiding spots. Finn stayed in his seat while Malachi tried to drag him from it. Fiin eventually broke from his trance and followed Malachi to the supply closet, taking a couple other students with him. The huddled in the small space together. Some kids were crying, some were calling their parents, others were blocking the door. There was the sound of screams outside as others tried to find their own hiding places. A sudden flash of light appeared under the door, so bright it could blind some. It smelled of rotting flesh and dust filled the air. Every scream was cut off the moment the light flashed, then everything was still.
