HER NAME WAS STARYCITE

Mugendai Hane: From Stars to Embers

Whoosh

The night gales sung.

She stood under the blinking of stars, hands clasped around her phone. Her darkish hair blew with the whistles of late autumn wind, the blackish chuuni curtains dancing like ghosts.

Ding!

A message from Konnie! She held the device to her chest and fidgeted with the white rabbit keychain attached to the case.

”I, The great kondragon, have finished another part of the epilogue!”

She smiled sheepishly, rapidly moving her fingers while his status was still online.

“Welcome home!!” she wrote, overjoyed at his presence after a long day of waiting for him to return from his classes. They exchanged messages for awhile, both of them giggling from either side of the screen.

“...If there was one person I could domesticate…it would be you…”

“Me too!! Let me coordinate your outfits”

“I’ll be in maid outfits daily… I refuse!”

“How did you know?!”

“I HATE YOUUU”

RIIIIING RIIIIING RIIIIING

She fumbled her fingers, nearly dropping the phone off the balcony before putting it to her ear.

“I wish…you were here already.” His voice was gentle with a hint of sweetness, though he always claimed to have a deeper one with others. She secretly kept him named as Princess Konstelle on her phone. Though that was from when she threatened to force him into crossdressing.

The steam from her breath could be seen in the night air even when muffled by her scarf. He turned his camera on. The screen showed him smiling while tilting his head. One of his hands rested like a pedestal for his cheek, the other holding a cup of green tea on a red and white striped tablecloth.

She stared at him, before turning her head towards the night sky. “I wish I was too.”

“Do you want to try shifting again tonight? You can try appearing in my room!”

“Let’s try again!” she exclaimed- eager to be beside him. “Make sure to find me when I’m there!”

“Night night~” he said after a sip.

“Nini! gambare~” She walked back into the room and opened the fridge to find 6 chicken nuggets, plopping onto her couch later with her feet kicking in the air.

Zzzzzz….

Zzz…..honk…mimimimimi……

Rumblee

Bedazzling rainbow lights overtook her vision as she woke up, and she felt like she was falling while looking at clouds. No, it wasn’t just feeling like she was falling- she was actually crashing down like a meteor!

“AAAAAAAAAAA”

The sky above grew further and further away as other clouds came into her vision. She saw the tops of giant mountains and strange creatures flying in the sky. Was that a dragon!? The wind whooshed in her ear and a giant centipede flew by with a hisss. It was the size of a subway train.

“WHAT KIND OF BEEEEP DREAM IS THIIS?!?”

CRASHHHHHH. KLANG.

“GUEHH.” She landed on a rough surface and the lights around her exploded into glitter-like fragments. Breathing heavily, her eyes slowly turned around to see the world around her. Vast, expansive, a never ending horizon from all sides. There were valleys with milky streams, pink mushrooms poking their heads out of a forest, a tower that trespassed the clouds at the far right, and the roaring of life in the sky. Wait, are there 3 moons??

“Grrrrrrr…”

“AN EARTHQUAKE!!” she rolled on the white ground which suspiciously looked like scales and tried to get on her feet but fell. That was the first time she caught a glimpse of her arms. It was…made of gems?

Suddenly the ground stood up and roared, sending her tumbling off of it and onto a pile of jewel-like feathers. The white dragon turned around and observed the surroundings before spotting her. Its eyes were turquoise, containing the calmest ocean waters. Purple spiraling horns protruded from its head like a ram. Its face was actually…super pretty!?!

The dragon roared and scattered the creatures in the air, rocks shivering from outside the nest. It ran towards her while showing its fangs, turning its head to bite at her.

I’lldieI’lldieI’lldieI’lldieI’lldiee!!

She closed her eyes as she screamed with all her might, “SOMEBODY, SAVE MEEEEEEEE”

Tap. Something soft poked at her forehead, and a melodic laughter followed. She opened her eyes to find a girl shorter than her, just barely not a child in size. Long silvery hair with a touch of lavender, and ears that stretched like a fox’s. The one eye that wasn’t covered by a purple ribbon in her hair was the same she’d seen before on the dragon’s face. Long flowy sleeves covered her upper-half, save for the black gloves worn on her hands. She was dressed in a dark blue skirt and thin white stockings, with bandages circled above her right knee. Her upper outfit looked like a mix between a kimono and a scientist’s lab coat.

Her mouth opened and closed, completely speechless as a tear rolled down her cheek. Mom, your daughter loves girls. The image of her thumbs up slowly faded away.

“Hey hey hey~ Justtt kidding!” The “dragon” spun around in an elegant motion, so enchanting she thought they had to invent an 8th deadly sin just to describe her emotions.

“I’m Kasumi, the Dragon Goddess of this world!” The girl paused before somehow pulling out a human-sized mirror to display in front of her. “And you are~?”

For the first time she saw her face. Instead of peachy flesh her skin looked like a mixture of beautiful starry gems. Even her hair had this magical blue color and sparkled. I’m majestic.

“My name…my name is Mi-” This is totally a fantasy world! A grand adventure calls for a new beginning! She held her palm over her left eye and reached her right hand out, taking a stance and declaring, “My name is Staryc-” Her eyes widened at the epically shining blade forming in her right hand, stuttering while trying to play off of it. “C-c-cite, born from the Cataclysm of Stars!”

Kasumi retracted the mirror and flicked her wrist while holding a fan. “Then it shall be so~ may fortune guide your path.” The goddess stepped back and entered a portal before vanishing from sight, so suddenly she didn’t have time to react. She looked back at her hand to inspect her weapon only to see herself holding the air.

“EHHHHHHHH?!?”

He was chewing on a pen while resting his hands on his laptop, equipped with a black dragon onesie and a golden dragon lamp he stared at the screen. “How should I finish this…it doesn’t feel like a proper ending no matter what I try to do…”

[The 6 of them were resting by the warm light of the campfire. Underneath the head of Vesta was the spear from the God of Calamity, being used as an extra toasty pillow. He was chewing on a kebab stick in his sleep and his chest hosted a ball gathering for light elementals. Leer was leaning against a rock, his crown propping up a blanket draping like a cavern, hiding Alice from the night. A soft tale hummed from the lips of Soynami whilst she strung her harp made of Pink Lunarium, gathering a great audience of small critters. The night spirit of the party, Kasumi, was off near a mana-lake, nuzzling away at Ramie, the Sheep Behemoth, drinking from the water…]

“Ngggh,” he stretched his long arms and stood up, walking over to the window and sighing. She’d be asleep by now, I wonder what she’s dreaming of again. He turned around to stare at his computer screen, realizing he’d made a typo. Five, not six. I’ll fix it after a break.

She climbed her way onto the peak of the nest, taking in the landscape before her properly.

“I finally.. made it.” she said, exasperated.

Her hand stretched out, seemingly towards the horizon. Unexpectedly, the clouds above her parted as if cleaved, and rays of starlight began to pour down…illuminating a path.

Her heart shook, eyes gleaming at the sight as if they were fireworks.

She took a step first, then began to run faster. Her feet felt light despite their hardness and she crossed meters of length with every leap, like the wind was carrying her in waves.

By nightfall the starlight had grown narrow, and she could see the end where the clouds rejoined.

“IS THAT ICING?!” She quickly cupped some in her hand and brought it to her mouth, coughing it out even faster. A fluffy golden deer glanced at her judgmentally, and spit to the side in disdain.

“Disgusting! Milk existing in this world should be a felony…” Wait, do they even have those here?

Her feet hurt and she crawled like a crippled old man in the desert, clutching at the tall grass.

“I’m…so thirsty…water…” She stumbled herself to a giant bed of hydrangea and plopped down like a stuffed animal. “This is asking too much from a former neet…”
