Chapter 2:
Mugendai Hane: From Stars to Embers

She took a step first, then began to run faster. Her feet felt light despite their hardness and she crossed meters of length with every leap, like the wind was carrying her in waves.
By nightfall the starlight had grown narrow, and she could see the end where the clouds rejoined.
“IS THAT ICING?!” She quickly cupped some in her hand and brought it to her mouth, coughing it out even faster. A fluffy golden deer glanced at her judgmentally, and spit to the side in disdain.
“Disgusting! Milk existing in this world should be a felony…” Wait, do they even have those here?
Her feet hurt and she crawled like a crippled old man in the desert, clutching at the tall grass.
“I’m…so thirsty…water…” She stumbled herself to a giant bed of hydrangea and plopped down like a stuffed animal. “This is asking too much from a former neet…”
A family of blue swans opened their beaks towards the mini raincloud above their heads, gatekeeping with fierce eyes. A spark ignited in her gaze as she readied herself and pounced towards them. But right as she was about to grab the big swan’s neck it flapped its wing and blasted her with a wall of cold milk, making her fall into the stream unsightly.
The glowing candy-looking fish bit at her hair and she barely dragged herself ashore, her hair now slapping over her face like seaweed. She turned around and met the eyes of the swans who swiftly paddled upstream with their dark cloud. “I WANT WATERR!” She screamed as she pointed at the sky when suddenly, a large droplet fell and smacked her face, making her skin extra glossy. She was stupefied and blinked. “huh…?”
cough cough “Ahem! The- the principle of magic is a will that overwrites the will of the world’s laws in a certain area!”
She jolted her head towards the voice and saw the goddess, flaunting her hair and continuing her ramble. “There exist 8 magic ranks. Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Royal, Behemoth, Calamity-Scale…Divine-Scale…and above that-”
“YOUVE BEEN WATCHING ME THIS WHOLE TIME AND COULDN'T EVEN BOTHER HELPING?!” she annoyedly complained.
She looked away, wiping a bead of sweat to hide her guiltiness before her hand returned to fidget behind her back. “I may have…forgotten that transmigrators get a starting wish…ahaha…”
“After all of this, I totally deserve more than just a wish…”
“So what would you like! Immortality and infinite riches are popular choices! Or perhaps you’d like to be a hero with the power to subjugate a demon king?” The goddess opened her eyes to see the face of the girl, and shivered at seeing a water fountain of drool and lust.
“Please don’t say…you’re one of those rare transmigrators who ask for an elf girl harem…” Her face turned blue at the resurfacing of a scary memory, “or loli wolf girls…”
She wiped her drool with her long dark sleeves, feeling a burst of determination.
“I want... my Princess!”
Switching to rest her chin on her index finger, Kasumi admitted, “I’m not sure, what that means!”
He opened the window and poked his head outside to catch a breath of cold. His eyes locked onto a rainbow trial falling from high above, his mouth falling slightly open at the biggest shooting star he’s ever seen. While distracted, he had no idea words were being typed automatically on his computer right behind him.
[At this time, the crevice of starlight in the sky closed, and the world went dark when suddenly a comet broke through the clouds with a blazing trail of light like a miniature sun. Her eyes widened, a strong wind blowing her hair behind her head.]
He put his hands together, while she smiled smugly at the blinding light.
“I wish-”
“I wish!”
“-to be at her side!”
“To have Princess Konstelle!”
Drip. Drip. Drip.
She drooled lecherously at the girl in front of her. Golden hair that fell around like a whirlpool, a pink Mahou Shojo dress complete with an edgy flipphone WITH a skull, and tiny black horns and a dragon tail. Starycite fell over and fainted in happiness.
poke pokee
…
boooop
“mmh?”
“Wake up wake up!”
Starycite opened her droopy eyes to see a face looking over her, the sun’s light gently falling on the girl's head playfully. Soft batches of golden hair tickled her neck, making her shift around until they fell on the floor like a cage surrounding her.
Her cheeks felt a little sore like someone had been pinching them. Wait, are they soft?
As if reading her mind the girl poked at her cheek again. “Where is this place?”
She jumped up and cupped his…her face.
squeezee
“Feels like tofuu…” said Starycite while melting.
“eek!” The girl stepped back and raised her arms into an X shape. “It’s important to ask for consent first!” She said with a pouty face.
“I’m sorry…but you look so cute in this form!” She scanned the new Kon and pointed at the bottom of her dress.
Kon looked down, slowly processing the pink…and the white…and seeing how small his hands were…
He looked inside his costume to double-check.
“I’m…I’M A GIRL??”
She rolled around laughing on the ground at his response, keeping it secret that she’d basically pranked him forever.
“Who- who are you?” The mahou shojo asked nervously.
She stood up, quickly covered an eye using her bangs, and threw her arm outward. “My name is Starycite! Born from Stars! And you…are Konstelle, born from a wish!” She smiled mischievously while holding back a giggle, almost to the point of tears.
He still has no idea about my identity! Maybe I can…take advantage of this roleplay.
That voice… “are you…Minthe?” He asked impulsively.
She froze- suddenly feeling awfully guilty. “Who…might that be…” she looked around at the air, inspecting its beautiful quality. “I seriously have no idea haha…”
He took out his flip phone and caught her eyes sparkling at the case. “IT’S DEFINITELY YOU!” He tackled her back and made them both fall over.
“Quick, now that you’re here give me your spit!” She opened her mouth and pulled his face towards her.
“Pretend you’re a mother bird feeding me! All the rivers here are made of milk, it’s disgusting!”
He reached behind her and brushed the petals of a small blue flower, a purpleish glow entering his fingers and settling in his heart warmly.
“I think…we were teleported into my story.”
“Huh?? Then you totally know how to go home right!” She started jumping in excitement.
“Maybe! I’m basically a god character!” He took her wrist and pointed in a direction after looking at the moons in the sky. “We have to go there, to the nearest kingdom!”
“We can have a lavish mansion and start our own cult!” She walked in front, leading them towards the destination.
[Standing within the waves of wheat, someone’s dark hair fluttered like a cape. He rode on a white lion with angelic wings, and from atop the hill he hopped down and offered his hand through the wind. He didn’t ask for my name, as if he already knew. But he did say his. “My name is Vesta.”]
He remembered writing that line as we neared the walls. The wheat hills surrounding the kingdom were a light orange in color. They were like this for most of the story, until the Lich of The Harvest took away their autumn mana and they only regained their pumpkin color after his defeat. That must mean… The Night Parade of Requiem hasn’t visited this place yet.
She grabbed the back of Kon’s sleeve, suddenly stopping. “Why are the travelers all talking to the guards…” she shook.
“We have to first provide a fee-” the realization dawned on him like a crushing avalanche. The two huddled against the wall like mentally traumatized beggars, neither of them strong-willed enough to overcome their social awkwardness.
“If you don’t ask first we’re both going to starve to death…”
“My throat’s dry and the milk gave me an allergic reaction…I can’t speak for the next five days…”
Kon took out his phone from habit, staring at the time and realizing flip phones don't have calculator apps. “Do you think they have cellular here…”
“WHY DIDN’T YOU ANTICIPATE THIS AND ADD WIFI CONNECTIONS!” she bonked his head unreasonably which made the victim sniffle.
“I’m calling emergency services…” beep beep beeep…
Unexpectedly, a deep voice actually answered, his words reverberating like a teenage boy in an echo chamber, “Moshi moshi…”
He hung up immediately. “We’re not going to make it through winter at this rate…do…do gems taste good…?”
She scooted away vigorously from the foul creature. “I’m not one of those candies you wear as a ring! But uhm…you can try once if you get us in the gate…maybe…” She looked away, abashed but intrigued at the fantasy.
He stood up, eyes filled with indomitable conviction as he took her hand and strode over.
They first came up to the guards via the merchant path: one cloaked giant, and one cat girl with three scratches on her cheek. “I wonder if they have cookies! Oh and cakes too! What do you think the inns are like!”
“Excuse me…is the entry here free for…merchants?”
Flame colored hair approached Starycite first, her fluffy ears pressed against her chest.
sniff sniff
“I smell…spoiled milk…” she made a slightly disgusted face.
sniff sniff
“I sense poverty-”
He blocked the cat girl from casting further verbal attacks and retreated with Starycite, “I should’ve expected that from a neko…” spits.
“A bet her chest is padded…” she murmured while glancing back. An extremely angry face towered over them, her mouth leaking out the smoke of retribution.
“He…hello…” The two of them turned back around slowly and sprinted for their lives.
After a few minutes of running both of them stopped to catch their breath, Kon now being piggybacked. He let himself slide off and fall onto the ground like a bag of rocks. His eyes were closed, panting heavily. He was never good at running, and the weak body he was in made him feel like sinking.
“K-KON! WHY IS THE DIRT BENDING LIKE THAT??” Like a jinx, the dirt below them broke and they fell into a cave tunnel, bumping into each other uncomfortably. Starycite managed to start running using the momentum while Kon continued down like a barrel in horror.
They crashed into a midst of plants that resembled bushes made of purple rose petals, glowing from the inside like lotuses. He felt like he was dying, but a tingly sensation traveled up from his fingertips touching the flowers.
Wait…are these!?
Spirals of mana began to circle around him, supplied by the petals as they fell and scattered into a formation. He felt a burning sensation on the left of his chest as his pupils expanded.
[“When I was a child I followed a lamb into a lake, but the water felt gentle. It let me walk through without the least bit of resistance. I could even breathe.” He was chewing on a lizard tail while recalling the memory, surprised at the strange faces the party members made. “Eventually, as we went deeper it became hard to see, but I trusted the sounds of ripples in front of me. Then, when it was completely dark, a nest of purple flowers under the foot of the lamb began to glow like lamps. And that was how I awakened my first Mana Heart.”]
