Chapter 33:

The heart remembers

Echoes beneath forgotten stars

Kaelrith’s cold smile cut through the hall like ice. “You’ve resisted me for so long… Now, let’s see what you are truly willing to sacrifice,” he said, his voice echoing against the steel and concrete walls like a blade.

Aiko’s gaze lifted—and finally, she saw him. Akihiko, his blue eyes. Their eyes met, and something unspoken passed between them. Her memories, long buried and hazy, surged forward like sunlight breaking through a storm: his calm smile, the warmth of his protective presence, the quiet reassurance that he had always been there for her. Her heart quickened, and a long-dormant power within her stirred, fusing with the memories now rushing back.

Aiko (internal monologue):

“Akihiko… you’ve been the missing piece of my heart. I feel it now—every laugh, every shared secret, every moment of quiet comfort. Your blue eyes, your gentle smile… it was all real. All of it. And now, I remember. I remember you. I remember me. I remember Akarihoshi.”

Akihiko, Mika, and Naoru paused, their muscles taut, sensing the surge of energy emanating from Aiko. Akihiko gripped his sword’s hilt, knuckles whitening.

“Release her,” Akihiko commanded, voice steady, cutting through the oppressive tension.

Kaelrith only smirked, silent, eyes glinting with dark amusement. He raised his hand, and shadows coiled outward like black mist, forcing Aiko’s body rigid in their icy grip. Her limbs froze, a puppet ensnared in invisible threads. Yet, deep within, her memories—the moments of love, safety, and trust—pierced the darkness like pinpricks of light.

Kaelrith advanced, his gaze sharper than any blade. “Now, princess Soraya, you belong to me. No longer free,” he intoned, his voice a venomous whisper that seemed to wrap around the hall like a shroud.

“Princess Soraya…?” Akihiko repeated under his breath. “Impossible…” His gaze lingered on Aiko.

Akihiko, Mika, and Naoru pressed forward, the tension thick enough to taste. Kaelrith’s presence was suffocating, yet Akihiko sensed the sliver of light still alive within Aiko—a spark that could not be fully snuffed out.

Kaelrith’s voice cut the air: “Show them that you belong only to me! Fight, Akihiko!”

Controlled by Kaelrith, Aiko unleashed her power against Akihiko. He parried the blow, his defense unyielding — yet he never once raised his hand to retaliate.”

Kaelrith noticed that Akihiko’s family power had returned…

“Well then, this will be interesting. Let’s see how strong you really are,” Kaelrith said with a grin.

Aiko froze, her body tense, the chains tightening. But inside, something flickered—her will, faint but unyielding. A spark of her own power erupted, faint yet vibrant, reddish streaks of light igniting from her hair. Kaelrith’s dark amusement deepened. “See, Akihiko? She is mine, now. Everything you love is under my control.”

Akihiko’s heart constricted. “Princess Soraya… alive… truly Aiko.” The realization slammed into him, a mix of shock and raw urgency. She wasn’t just a girl from Earth; she was the princess he thought she was long gone, now caught in darkness.

But then he saw it—the tiny flame in her eyes. Aiko’s true self had not vanished. He took a deep breath, letting calm determination anchor him.

“Look at me, Aiko,” he said softly, stepping closer, but carefully keeping his sword lowered. “I know who you are. This isn’t you. Don’t let his darkness take control. You are… more than this. You are stronger than him.”

Aiko’s eyes flickered, confusion warring with recognition. Her body trembled, yet her heart pulsed with memory and hope. Kaelrith’s sneer only hardened, watching her struggle.

Akihiko’s voice resonated again, each word a lifeline:

“Remember who you are. Remember everything—our moments together. You are not alone. Your power is yours, not his.”

A soft, white-blue aura shimmered around Akihiko, radiating warmth and reassurance. Aiko felt it—a whisper of safety, a touch of familiarity. The chains around her trembled slightly, and the spark of her own will flickered brighter.

Kaelrith pressed harder, and Aiko cried out, pain slicing through her. But Akihiko did not flinch. His eyes burned with certainty:

“I believe in you, Aiko. Your love is stronger than his darkness. Your true self will not be taken. Trust yourself. Use the love you hold—for your parents, for your friends, for everything that keeps your spirit alive. And above all… use the love you carry for me.”

Her breath caught. "He… he knows. He knows what I feel for him." The realization struck her heart with equal parts fear and warmth, her chest tightening.

Memories—small, fleeting, and bright—flashed before Aiko: laughter, the gentle comfort of friends, whispered promises, quiet nights under the stars. Each one ignited the flame within her, battling the shadows that sought to dominate her.

Slowly, almost trembling, she placed her hand against her chest, feeling the rapid beat of her heart beneath her palm. Closing her eyes, she let the world around her fade into silence, clinging to that voice, to that love that refused to let her fall.

Slowly, steadily, her aura shifted. Red-gold light shimmered around her, pushing against Kaelrith’s dark power. The invisible chains strained, quivering as if sensing her resolve. Kaelrith’s frown deepened in disbelief; his darkness was no longer absolute.

Aiko’s body slammed to the ground under a surge of dark energy send to her by Kaelrith, briefly losing consciousness. Her hair fanned out across the floor like a fiery halo, each strand a defiant spark against the encroaching shadow.

Akihiko leapt forward, his heartbeat syncing with hers, his aura flaring brighter. But Kaelrith met him, dark energy swirling like a storm, ice and fire coiled together in tension. His gaze challenged Akihiko, warning that the battle ahead would be decisive.

“This time, Akihiko,” Kaelrith hissed, “you will suffer. Princess Soraya is mine! I will not fail as my father did.”

Akihiko inhaled, aura blazing. “Aiko will not be forced. I will protect her. No one else—no darkness—will decide her fate.” He gritted his teeth and recalled every moment with Aiko—her laughter, courageous decisions, gentle looks. His heart was fueled by a power that was not just his family’s energy, but pure love and resolve.

The wind tore through the shattered windows, whipping around them, charged with raw energy. Akihiko stepped forward, white-blue light blazing, waves of protective energy pushing against Kaelrith’s shadows.

Dark energy collided with light. Sparks and flame erupted as power swirled chaotically through the hall. Akihiko’s sword met the storm, deflecting, countering, shielding, while every ounce of his determination flowed into the battle—into saving Aiko, into reclaiming her memory and heart from the suffocating darkness.

The stage was set for a climactic confrontation, each pulse of energy a testament to love, trust, and the unbreakable will of a girl who had found her true self again.

“Your power is dark, Kaelrith,” he said calmly but firmly. “But the love Aiko carries defeats darkness. And I will be here to protect her.”

Akihiko dropped his sword.

“I don’t need it. “

Said Akihiko with his confidence, when he looked at Aiko. His aura started to rise.

Then waves of energy collided—Kaelrith’s dark power against Akihiko’s white-blue light. Sparks and flames flew in every direction; light and darkness intertwined in a whirlwind of power. Kaelrith swung, trying to distract Akihiko and force him back. Akihiko resisted, every swing deflected, every defense perfectly synchronized.
