Chapter 34:
Echoes beneath forgotten stars
Meanwhile, Aiko began to move, weak and disoriented, yet tiny sparks of red-gold energy flickered along her hair, defying Kaelrith’s influence. Her eyes fluttered open, memories slowly returning—moments with Akihiko, shared laughter, quiet walks across Akarihoshi, and the gentle reassurance of his presence. Each memory ignited her heart, fueling the dormant strength within her.
"Why… why do I feel so alive, even now?" Aiko’s mind whispered. "This energy… this warmth… it’s him. Akihiko." She felt a small flame of determination ignite deep in her chest. I cannot let this darkness win. Not now. Not ever. I have to… fight—for everyone I love.
Kaelrith sensed his control slipping. His jaw tightened, eyes narrowing as anger and panic intertwined. He concentrated with all his might, dark energy thickening around his hands, yet Akihiko remained unmoving, a calm yet radiant aura of white-blue light emanating from him, cutting through the shadows like a beacon.
Akihiko’s heart raced, though his outward posture remained controlled.
“Aiko… she’s struggling. I can feel her pain, her fear, even though the darkness surrounding her." His mind focused, every memory of her fueling his resolve. "I have to reach her. I can’t let him take her… Not now, not ever. She is my light… and I will not let that light be extinguished.”
Slowly, almost imperceptibly, Aiko lifted her head. Her red-gold hair shimmered with weak bursts of energy, like embers struggling against a gust of wind.
Kaelrith’s eyes narrowed, sensing the spark of defiance. With a swift motion, he unleashed a surge of dark energy at Akihiko. The white-blue aura tried to block it, but the force slammed into him, sending him skidding across the shattered floor. Dust and debris billowed around him, yet he rose again, eyes fixed unwaveringly on Aiko.
“She is mine, Akihiko,” Kaelrith sneered, the words slicing through the hall like knives. “Time is not on your side.”
Akihiko clenched his fists, feeling the sting of the impact, yet his heart burned with unwavering resolve.
“I may be weakened, but my heart is stronger than his darkness. Aiko… you have to fight with me. Please… remember yourself.” He took a slow, deep breath, grounding himself. “No matter the cost, I will not lose you.”
Aiko’s eyes, under the grip of Kaelrith’s dark power, revealed something unexpected: a flicker of defiance. Her hands trembled, invisible chains constraining her movements, but her spirit pulsed beneath the surface.
“Akihiko… I feel you. I… I remember. All of it… the warmth, the safety, the love. I cannot let him… I won’t. I have to stand… for him, for my family, for everyone I care about.” Aiko’s mind again ignited with fragments of memories, each one a thread she could cling to.
Aiko’s gaze landed on Akihiko. Pain and determination etched into his face mirrored the turmoil in her own heart. She felt the residual energy within her gathering—love for her parents, her friends, for the world, and above all, for him.
A surge of courage propelled her forward. Red-gold energy radiated from her like a small flame, illuminating the hall as she ran toward Akihiko. Each step resonated with her will, her heartbeat a stubborn drum refusing to yield to despair.
When she grasped his hand, their eyes met, and the world seemed to shatter and rebuild in that instant. Light and warmth flowed between them, merging their energies into a vortex that shook the hall. Akihiko’s white-blue aura intertwined with her red-gold flame, forming a radiant cyclone that defied Kaelrith’s shadow.
“This… this is her. Aiko, that I know. She’s here, truly here, and not lost to him. Together… together we can overcome this darkness. We will win against darkness… no matter what it takes,” Akihiko thought, his pulse syncing with the rhythm of their combined aura.
Aiko’s heart roared with newfound freedom.
“I am not alone… I am stronger than this darkness. He cannot take me. I… I choose myself, and I choose him.” Her spirit, long suppressed, now surged with unyielding determination.
The energy between them pulsed like a living heartbeat. Kaelrith froze, eyes widening at the combined force, realizing for the first time that his control was slipping. Desperation laced his features as he attempted to summon his dark power, weaving barriers and offensive strikes—but the light between Aiko and Akihiko was unstoppable.
Their energy engulfed him. Kaelrith’s dark energy shredded under the pressure, his commands meaningless against the storm of love and resolve. Every attempt at retaliation failed. In the final, blinding instant, Kaelrith was consumed by an invisible inferno of light and fire, his presence obliterated from the hall.
Silence fell. The threat was gone, but victory came at a cost. Aiko, drained from the effort, collapsed, her red-gold glow fading slowly as exhaustion overtook her. She lay in Akihiko’s arms, fragile and trembling, a faint warmth radiating from her chest.
“Akihiko… did I really do it?” She thought weakly, eyes fluttering closed. “We… we really did it… together. I can feel him, still here… I’m not alone.”
The Akarihoshi fleet streaked across the sky, obliterating the remaining fragments of Kaelrith’s forces. The school hallways echoed with the aftermath of chaos, now eerily quiet.
Akihiko knelt beside Aiko, cradling her in his arms. Her breathing was shallow, heartbeat faint. Every fiber of her being had been exhausted in the battle. Akihiko’s chest tightened with fear; losing her now would undo everything he had fought for.
“Stay with me, Aiko. Please… don’t leave me. I can’t lose you now.”
Naoru rushed forward. “Akihiko, the path is clear. The fleet has secured the area.”
Rin stepped up beside him, urgency in her voice. “Your Majesty! She won’t survive long here. We must act immediately! Only Miraja can help her.”
At the same time, Akarihoshi’ soldiers escorted Aiko’s parents—Hiroshi and Emiko—who had been trapped by Kaelrith’s forces. Shaken but unharmed, they froze at the sight of their daughter lying helpless. A soldier restrained them gently. “Wait. Only the royal doctors on Akarihoshi can stabilize her life force.”
Akihiko gazed skyward. Teleporting her directly from Earth was risky—any instability could be fatal. Yet leaving her here was not an option. He gritted his teeth, determination blazing:
“I will not fail her. We will get her to safety. Together, we will survive this.”
Akihiko turned to Naoru.
“We cannot risk her life. The fleet is the only way. We will travel together—to Akarihoshi. But we must go now, time is now our enemy.”
Naoru nodded solemnly. Mika placed a hand on Akihiko’s shoulder, hands trembling from exertion and worry. “It is the only choice. If anyone can save Aiko, it is Miraja. Let’s go.”
