Chapter 9:
Second Luck
As Geno put a comforting hand on Shen's shoulder, his voice got quieter. "I have to go now," he said. "I have work to do in other parts of the kingdom, but I can't wait to see how far you've come when I get back."
Shen, who was still getting used to the idea of having a brother, started to like how strict but helpful Geno was. As Geno's figure slowly faded into the distance, Shen realized he was alone again. But even though he was alone, his desire to succeed only grew stronger.
When Geno left, Sergeant Raiden took the field and immediately drew everyone's attention with his commanding presence. Like Shen, a lot of new recruits had come to the training grounds. Each of them had a strained look of hope and fear on their faces, and they were all going to be future commanders. Raiden looked over the group with a piercing, judging gaze before speaking in a commanding tone.
"Let me be clear," he said, his voice cutting through the early morning air. "Yelling orders is not what a commander does." The key to true strength is to build a team, which is an organization that works together like a well-oiled machine. A commander who works alone on the battlefield won't last long. This is why everyone will be put in a group during their training. You will learn how to lead, work with others, and think strategically. Your teammates will be more than just people you work with; they will be like family.
Raiden made a strong sweep of his palm toward the recruits who were standing around. "Everyone here wants to be a commander, but not everyone has what it takes. We are not just teaching people; we are making leaders who can lead whole armies.
Shen paid close attention as he realized how serious the role he wanted to play was.
In the middle of the grounds, Raiden pointed to a big board with a lot of complicated symbols and designs on it. "Discipline and hierarchy are what make up the chain of command," he said. "You will be put into one of three groups based on your skills: archery specialist, infantry leader, or cavalry commander." The warlords are in charge, then the admirals, the royal guard commanders, and the siege engineers. A commander needs to make sure that their orders are followed, but they also need to earn the trust of their troops. Your success on the battlefield will depend on how well your squad works together and how well you plan. The most important thing you'll learn from this is how to work as a team.
As Raiden spoke, his eyes stayed on Shen, making his words seem almost personal. "The success of a commander depends on how well their team does, not on how skilled they are. Your team failed because of you. If they are successful, it will show that you are a good leader. Remember that this is about the strength of the group, not the glory of one person.
Shen listened to everything that was said, and the heavy weight of the great responsibility felt like a physical burden on him.
Raiden stepped forward slowly and with purpose. "Get ready," he said with a lot of force. "This won't be an easy training. Only those who are strong emotionally, mentally, and physically will be able to keep going and earn the right to lead.
Raiden then began to put together teams of applicants, pairing people who seemed very different from each other. He pointed to Shen and five other people and said, "This will be your team." Even though you all come from different places, you are all one now. You can only do well if you learn from what each other does well and what each other does poorly.
Shen looked around at the other people. They were all different people, but they all had an air of intensity or mystery about them. He was first drawn to a man in a black mask who was watching everything with a calm, creepy look on his face.
"This is Kael," Raiden said, pointing to the recruit with the mask on. "His ancestors were people who killed people. The mask shows where he came from. Don't think that his silence means he's weak. He always finishes what he starts, and no one can match his determination.
Shen looked at Kael and felt an unbreakable air of secrecy around him.
Then Shen's attention shifted to a young woman with short hair and piercing eyes. She stood up straight and looked like she was paying attention. She had a longbow on her back.
Raiden said, "This is Kelly." "A good archer who almost always hits her target. She is very loyal to her team and stays calm even when things get tough.
Shen saw the strength in Kelly's gaze and gave her a small nod.
The third person said hello with a sly smile and a wink at Shen. With his hands in his pockets, he said, "The name's Fenix" without a care in the world. "I'm going to guess that the good sergeant here has already told you that I used to be a thief. Don't worry; I've changed. Most of the time.
Raiden looked at Fenix with a stern look. "He is quick and smart," he said. You should be careful when you trust him. He always finds a way out, even if it means hurting other people.
Shen thought Fenix's cocky behavior was funny. Even though the sergeant was being careful, he could already see how Fenix's creativity could help.
The fourth member was a big man with strong shoulders and a face that had been scarred by many fights. He stood still, and his presence was strong and commanding.
Raiden said, "This is Toren." He used to be a mercenary. In battle, he is ruthless, but his loyalty has always been in question. He is here to prove his worth.
Toren nodded to Shen in a small, hardly noticeable way, and his face was hard to read.
Shen finally got to the last team member, a young woman who looked tough but tired. Her face showed the scars of hardship, and her posture showed that she was strong.
"Meet Zara," Raiden said. She has been a soldier for a long time. After losing her family, she chose to move on from her past and become a commander. Like you, Shen, she's been through the horrible things that cannibals do. Even though she is strong and determined, she doesn't trust people because of what has happened to her in the past.
Zara looked at Shen very hard. "I've heard of the Takeda family," she said with a strong voice. "But if you're only here because of your name, you won't be here for long."
Raiden then turned to the group to officially announce their last member. He said with confidence, "This is Shen." "He is from the Takeda family."
The people in the group were shocked and looked at each other. People all over the kingdom looked up to the name Takeda as a sign of great power and leadership.
Fenix raised an eyebrow and smiled slyly. "You mean Takeda? Are we in the presence of royalty or something? Even though he was joking around, there was a hint of real interest in his voice.
Kelly's eyes were sharper and more analytical. "The Takeda name carries weight," she said, "but a name alone does not make a leader."
Toren's voice was low and rough as he crossed his huge arms. "Everyone here has worked hard to get here, Takeda or not. We won't treat you any better than anyone else.
Kael didn't say a word the whole time, and his hidden face didn't show any emotion. Shen could feel the man's eyes on him, but he still didn't know what he was really thinking.
Raiden stepped forward and broke the tension with a strong voice. "Here, it doesn't matter what your names, backgrounds, or reputations are. What matters is how well you do your job and work with others. From now on, you depend on each other for your very lives. Now show that you deserve the title of commander.
