Chapter 0:
Uma Musume: American Champions [Uma Musume Spin-off Series]
I'll never forget the day: January 19th, 1935. Something my mother had always told me would be a useless step in my life ended up being a turning point that would only further my drive to become greatest horse girl that the United States of America had ever witnessed. The day of my debut had finally come, and in the same instant that it had arrived, it was gone.
My gaze landed on the audience. The sophisticated looks on their faces all briefly lit up with joy, but that joy wasn't for me. It was for her, the girl whose name was exclaimed loudly, yet not loud enough for me to hear. No matter how badly I wanted to hear my own name come from the announcers, only her name echoed around the dirt track. Maybe it was my own anger at having come in fourth place that had blocked her name from my memory, but what would stick with me forever was the look on my mother's face when I returned to the paddock: pure, unadulterated disgust.
The story of the greatest; the journey to the top - it wasn't achievable by any means. It would have been wise to give up; to spare myself further abuse from my mother at having been her greatest mistake. But I trusted in my trainer. I had complete faith in his words, that the name Seabiscuit would one day be plastered on statues all across the country. Why did I ever trust him?
