Chapter 2:

Learning about one another

Vampire and the Detective 1

Raine shakes her head, sighing as she turns the handlebars; Starting the engine, driving away from the fire. She takes the both of them through the downtown area of the city, bright lights from the shops and signs, dotting both sides. Most of the way, people were pointing at her speaking unintelligible words. Seething with anger at their actions, her hands squeeze the handlebars tighter. She stops at the end of main street, turning into an office building parking lot. Parking at the closet spot to the entrance, she switches off the engine, removing the helmet. “This is it.”

Chell gets off, looking up at the place. "Wow... um..." she seems to mutter a question before deciding to keep quiet.

Walking inside the lobby, the doors to the main part of the building were sealed shut. “I live and work on the second floor, the office here has been abandoned for months. I bought the building after they left.” They pass by a sign saying  "Torius P.I upstairs.” Upon reaching the second floor, Raine removes her keys, unlocking the main door. She steps inside, motioning for Chell to follow. The place was messy with documents, maps and photos laying around the amount of them being uncountable. A large desk sits in the room to the left, with writing utensils scattered on top. A bed, closet and small TV were in the room to the right which was easily shown to be the bedroom. Ahead was a large open room with a small sofa, a bookcase and another slightly larger tv. Raine puts her hat on the stand and throws the satchel into the left room. She walks further in heading toward the kitchen.

"Ooh... its darker than I thought it would be... which I like... oh... wait I never got your name." Chell takes off her boots near the door as she floats in after her.

“Here,” Raine says placing a foldable chair down. She places a pot on the stove, letting it sit to boil. “Raine, that’s what you can call me. As the pot boils, I will allow you to ask me any questions you want, but once its boiling, it's my turn got that?”

"Alright... so what was the situation between you and those gunmen at that building before I... well caused it to explode" she then sits down.

“They’re an organization called Howling Moon; I was investigating them for my own interests. I was following a lead I manage to dig up, that brought me to that place”

"Oh alright... what was with those people pointing at you during the ride here... if... well if it isn't too personal to ask..." she looks away for a moment

“Not yet, but I’ll say eventually if you’re planning to stay. Can you do me a favor, grab the first aid kit in the room on the right. It’s under the bed.”

"Oh, right that bullet must hurt for you..." she floats off finding the first aid kit and grabbing it, after coming back into the large room passing it to Raine

Raine unbutton her shirt and tosses it aside on the couch, she grabs tweezers and pulls the bullet out from her shoulder, breathing a sigh of relief to see it intact. Wrapping a bandage around the wound she also places an ice pack on the bruise that was on her side. She wraps a second bandage across her chest covering that injury as well. “Looks like you have time for two more, so choose wisely” she says noticing the tea pot beginning to whistle.

"So... you are a normal human, right? no magic or technological enhancements?"

“Yes, I am. In this world mostly everyone is normal if that’s what you mean, the only technological enhancement walking around are those stupid shitty raptors.

"Ok... my last question... do you know of a scientist named Fritz? another name he calls himself is the DOK..."

“No, there isn’t someone by that name in Torius, if you’re thinking about Howling Moon, its run by somebody called Alicia, I doubt that’s your Fritz.” The pot was full on whistling, signaling that time was up, Raine gets up and throws in a pasta before turning down the heat. “My turn, who are you exactly, but tell me in only two sentences.”

"Good that you don't know him... his followers usually instantly pray up to his name being said..." she then sits up straight as she begins the description of herself, her voice becomes more energetic. "I am a 18,000-year-old vampire, I came from another dimension to save myself from the man I asked you about, Fritz. I live here on earth, safely away from him, I happened to wake up nearby, and I don't know how or why I was brought here."

“Then I can’t ask you much and I rather you keep your world matters to yourself.” She thinks for a second. “Fine, then I’ll ask you this, you got hit several times back at the depot, but you’re nowhere near the position I’m in, what did you pull?”

"Well... I'm an advanced age vampire, I know you would really doubt the existence of a vampire, but I have really potent regeneration, although that explosion did rip a few chunks out of me, I can put myself back together... as long as I have blood to heal with. You saw me with my fingers dug into the flesh of those guards; I can also drink blood with my fingers." She says sounding proud of herself.

“I’m saying this now, you aren’t doing anything to me. Let’s see.” Raine says picking up a paper off the floor, reaching down again she picks up a pencil. Adjusting her glasses she continues, “I have one more question for you then due to lack of info you seem to have, since you’re a vampire, do you have any weaknesses besides sunlight.”

"Besides sunlight... garlic..." she takes a moment to think. "Oh, and holy water, but sunlight is the most dangerous to me, the others just irritate me."

“Okay.” Raine says getting up and finishing the pasta dish. “You don’t eat human food, correct? If you are going to need blood, use the bottom drawer of the fridge, but if a bag or something breaks you take care of it.”

"I can drink orange juice, but that is the extent of human edibles I can have, I'll try to not make a mess."

“You’re probably asking yourself, how I’m believing everything you’re saying. Your body actions and the way you are speaking, tells me that you’re telling the truth. Also, since Howling Moon puts out so much garbage into this city, there’s nothing to believe its fake."

"Well since you are giving me shelter, I am telling the truth... I can prove the vampire part if you look at my fangs." she opens her mouth, giving a full display of her vampiric canines.

“Yeah, don’t do that around other people. Not only will you freak them out, but also draw Howling Moon’s attention, if you haven’t already.”

"Oh, alright, since I don't feel fondly of freeloaders, I'll try and make some use of myself to you. That is, if you need me to help you, I won't hesitate to assist you"

“Since you’re offering, fine. There are files in a stack in my office, read all of those to get up to speed on what is going on. I’m going to bed, I don’t know how you operate during the day, until then keep the noise low. Don’t open the locker behind the sofa, there’s a shotgun and bullets in there, that’s sensitive. Don’t blow a hole in the ceiling.”

"Oh, I don't have any interest in guns, so that won't be an issue, during the day I will be able to turn my body into stone so that I won't be harmed by the sun, good night!" Chell goes to the stack of papers and speed reads each one until sun started peeking through the blinds. Later, in the morning, Chell goes to sleep on the sofa, her body turns into a marble like stone. A simple note is left on her body saying, "do not touch me while I'm like this, it will hurt"

Raine wakes up to a beeping alarm punching it off the wooden nightstand beside her. She groggily gets up and places it back on the nightstand, while changing into her day clothes. Walking into the living room, she sees the statue form of Chell on the sofa. “Well, it's not one of the craziest things I’ve seen.” She pours herself a cup of coffee, while reading a file from the other day. The phone rings besides her, “Hello?” “You actually found something related to Project callous beauty. The depot was a bust.”

“Yes, the news about the fire was caused by me, and the new assistant I have.”

“Okay, calm down, like I knew the place was going to blow up. Look, Lewis, just fax me over the info and I’ll look into it more.”

“Stop worrying too much about your older sister, I’m fine.”

“Got to go, I have to work.” Raine hangs up and places the phone down. “I left Relacor to escape my family and my brother follows me here, what irony.” She says sipping from her cup walking into the office.
