Chapter 12:
Tale Of Tails: A Girl From Earth
Harmony walked slowly through the castle gardens, the night air filled with the soft fragrance of blooming flowers that shimmered like tiny jewels under the moonlight. Every petal seemed to capture a sliver of silver light, reflecting it in a thousand sparkling points that danced across the dew-covered grass. The air was cool, yet it carried the subtle warmth of summer nights, the soft whisper of leaves brushing together in the gentle breeze. Harmony’s thoughts, however, were far from the serene surroundings. They were still tangled around Evander, the weight of his presence lingering in her mind like a melody she could not forget. Finally… I’ve broken through his wall… she thought, her chest tightening with a mixture of fear and exhilaration. But there was something new in his eyes now—something she could not fully comprehend, yet felt deeply in her chest, tugging at the corners of her heart. Her pulse quickened, each beat echoing like a distant drum. Could it be… that I’ve reached his heart? Or is it just the magic of the night playing tricks on me?
Suddenly, she heard soft, deliberate footsteps that barely disturbed the gravel beneath his boots. Her breath caught, a small gasp escaping her lips, and she turned to see him—Evander, standing a few meters away. The moonlight illuminated him, casting silver highlights on his golden-brown hair and accentuating the sharp, commanding lines of his jaw. His gaze glimmered like sunlight trapped between branches, warm and intense, filled with a complexity that both unnerved and enchanted her. His presence was commanding, yet strangely comforting—like a quiet storm waiting to break. Harmony felt an electric pull she could neither name nor resist, a fluttering in her chest that made her legs tremble despite her will.
Slowly, Evander approached, each step measured and deliberate, the soft crunch of the gravel beneath his boots echoing in the quiet night. His voice, low and controlled, broke the silence, carrying a mixture of caution and something deeper, something unspoken:
“Do you still not realize… it isn’t safe for you to wander the castle gardens alone at night?”
Harmony’s feet shuffled backward, hesitant, as though the ground itself resisted her escape. Step by step, she retreated, until her foot caught on a loose stone. Her heart jumped as she teetered, the world tilting around her. Before she could stumble, Evander’s hand shot out, strong yet gentle, gripping hers and pulling her slightly toward him. The touch was electric, sending shivers up her arm and threading warmth straight into her heart. The tension between them hung thick in the night air, almost tangible, pressing against her chest, filling her senses.
She met his gaze, cheeks burning with a heat that had nothing to do with the cool night air. For a long, suspended moment, they simply looked at each other. The moonlight softened their surroundings, the distant rustle of leaves fading into a quiet hush, leaving only the two of them suspended in a perfect, fragile bubble of time.
Then, with careful, deliberate motion, Evander placed his hand on Harmony’s cheek. Her eyes fluttered shut at the touch, goosebumps rising along her skin as a tremor ran through her chest. What is he doing? This… this feels too beautiful to be real… she thought, heart thundering in her ears, mind dizzy with anticipation and longing.
Evander’s voice was a soft murmur, trembling with an emotion he barely controlled:
“I don’t know what you hoped to achieve with your stubbornness… whatever your intention was, you’ve claimed my heart.”
Harmony’s breath hitched, her own voice barely more than a whisper as she replied:
“I only wanted to pierce through your cold wall… because I knew… you were different inside.”
She took his hand in hers, holding it with reverence, feeling the warmth radiating from his skin, the quiet strength beneath it. His eyes searched hers, reading the longing reflected there, and for a moment, the world seemed to shrink until it encompassed only the two of them. Slowly, his face inched closer, lips nearly brushing hers, before he pulled back abruptly, the restraint in his expression sharper than a sword.
“I… I mustn’t. We mustn’t,” he whispered, his voice tight with unshed emotion.
Harmony understood. The world was not safe for hearts to speak freely in times of war and chaos, no matter how strong the connection between two souls. Yet the yearning, the need for closeness, lingered between them like fire waiting to ignite.
Evander pulled her into his embrace, strong yet gentle, as though he could shield her from every threat, every shadow in the night. She pressed herself against him, feeling the steady beat of his heart, the warmth radiating from his body, the subtle tremor that betrayed the intensity of his feelings. He whispered softly into the quiet night:
“No matter what… I will always be by your side. Perhaps the time isn’t right now, but I promise… one day, it will be.”
Harmony closed her eyes, leaning fully into his embrace, the tension in her body dissolving into the gentle warmth of his arms. She could feel the mingling of their emotions, the collision of longing and restraint, desire and understanding, and a quiet certainty that, despite the impossibilities, they were bound to each other in a way that no circumstance could sever. He knows what I feel… and I know he feels the same… she realized. For now… this is enough to calm us both.
The night seemed to hold its breath around them, the moonlight casting a silver glow on the two figures, their shadows intertwined on the dewy grass. Flowers swayed gently in the light breeze, petals brushing against one another as if echoing the quiet rhythm of their hearts. Even the stars seemed to pause, their light trembling slightly, as if the heavens themselves had come to witness the fragile, beautiful connection forming between Harmony and Evander. In that embrace, every unspoken word, every restrained emotion, every stolen heartbeat found its place, weaving a tapestry of longing, hope, and promise that would linger in their hearts long after the night faded into dawn.
Harmony rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, feeling the comforting yet thrilling energy radiating from him. And as they stood there, locked in a moment of unspoken understanding, she knew—some promises needed no words, and some hearts spoke louder than any declaration ever could.
