Chapter 3:
The water is deep, but so is mystery
I was laughing, and it wasn't a fake laugh like normal, a true, real laugh. It was cold outside, but in here it was warm. Joseph had told me about what he did for fun, which was watching mysteries, and so I asked if he could solve the case of the missing steak. He thought I was serious, but it took a while for him to understand that it was a joke. That's when water hit the open window, and not just a few drops, not a hose, a whole wave of water hit it, and a lot got inside. I stare at the water, at Joseph, then back at the water, before grabbing my phone and running outside. I run down the back lawn, fumbling with the flashlight but eventually turning it on, and shining it on the bank. There were long claw marks, and a rock that had been there before we moved in was now a tiny pile of pebbles. "Hey, are you okay? That probably isn't a whole lot common here." Joseph says behind me, staring at the claw marks, " Does this happen a lot or..." I shake my head, confused, "No, it's usually calm, even during storms, but... my grandparents always said there was a monster in this lake. Said to rise when there is a treasure missing from our house, and it can only be calmed by returning the stolen item, or we kill it. I don't think it's real,l, but there is a possibility." I say, before taking a photo of the claw marks. "You're a detective, right?" I ask, turning my head to look at Joseph. "Yes, I am, why?" I look at Joseph, a plan forming in my mind. Then help me find this monster and put an end to it."
