Chapter 4:

Albatross

Swim!

"Huh?! Didn't you listen to anything I just said?" Camellia was still in shock after hearing Marina's idea.
"Oh trust me, I did, but it's not whether I can or can't; I must get back home!" Marina was determined.
And I need to return soon. How am I supposed to explain this to my parents if they get back before me?!
"I understand, but going alone is dangerous! Even with a group of experts, it would still be impossible."
"I get it, but I can't stay here forever. If finding the mermaids is my only way home, then I'm going there no matter what."
"I'll help you! We can borrow my boat and—
"And then what? Finn, although as your friend I support your very irrational little adventures on the sea, despite being against it, I still worry every time you go out there, and don't even get me started on how your mother would react if she knew about this. If it were that easy, I'd also like to meet mermaids and be able to talk to them, but I can't ignore the dangers. Imagine you do go by boat. You are in the middle of the sea with no clue where to even start looking, and do you think sea monsters will be so generous not to attack you?"
Sea monsters?!
Marina was worried.
"Now, if you borrowed one of the albatrosses from your mother, you'd at least stand a chance."
"Not in a billion years!" Finn said out loud.
Why did this turn into their discussion while I look like a spectator? I want to say something, but the situation got so intense between those two that I'm afraid to interrupt.
Marina thought.
"Aghh, I knew you'd say that. I understand why, but look, I'm trying to think of a solution to help Marina get home without you both ending up in some danger."
"You didn't have any idea, though, only complaints. You..." Finn stopped talking after seeing the sad expression on Camellia's face.
"I'm sorry." Finn apologized.
"It's okay. I just want you to know that I worry only because I care about you."
"I know... And it's not okay. You're the only person who's been on my side so far, and I shouldn't have lashed out at you. I apologize to you too, Marina. You are just trying to get home, and I turned this about me." Finn felt bad.
"Hey, don't worry about it. I get it; the situation is complex, and I much more prefer honesty than sugarcoating. Hearing you two argue so much made me realize how I need a really good plan to accomplish the goal." Marina said.
"I understand it won't be easy, but it's not so impossible as you might think."
"Huh?!" Both Finn and Camellia had a surprised look on their faces.
"I listened carefully to everything you guys were saying, and I think I have an idea. Camellia, you said this was a mermaid's bracelet. It has special abilities, right? You sounded like there was more than one, and maybe we can use the bracelet to locate the mermaid kingdom. Moreover, everyone lives on these islands in the sky now, but how are people travelling from one island to another? I doubt you fairies are carrying humans one by one. And earlier you mentioned a word, umm, albatross? You said that we'd have a chance if we borrowed one of them, and then I recalled how you mentioned that albatross thing before too when you two thought I fell from it in the sea. So my question is, what's an albatross? Marina was eager to know.
"Wow, your observation is impressive."
Camellia commented.
I guess I think better under pressure when I know there is no other way. At least that's what my mom always says. She didn't mean it as a compliment, though.
Marina recalled tough situations she'd often found herself in and creative quick ways the girl would solve them. In the corner of her mini flashbacks was the mom giving a strict but caring look.
Did it have to come to this for you to start using your brain?! Ahh, I can still hear it loud and clear in my head. Use your imagination, she said. Okay, Mom, I will.
Marina smiled.
"Albatross is a flying ship. It's the main way of transport, actually the only one if you're going a longer distance." Camellia explained.
"Humans are the ones who developed them, and honestly all of us fairies are grateful."
"But why would you guys even need a flying ship? You have wings; you can fly."
Marina was clueless.
"Flying on our own is fine around the local area, but going to faraway islands is exhausting. Not only that, the majority of fairies can't push through strong winds."
"You're amazing, though." Finn said to Camellia.
"Yes, because someone won't stop asking me to carry their boat to the sea."
Fairy looked at Finn and crossed her arms.
"He he... Thank you." He whispered.
"Oh, I see. Makes sense." Marina replied.
"But that's it. I was right then. We can use Albatross to search for the mermaids from the sky. That way we don't have to expose ourselves to dangers and can even have a better look from above."
"Hmmm yes, but like I said earlier, Albatross would only give you a chance; I didn't say it would guarantee anything."
Camellia said to Marina.
"A chance is a chance. Ohh, come on. I have a feeling you actually want to go."
"Huh?"
"Oh yes, you do. You actually want to go on an adventure, but at the same time you're scared of the unknown. And you want to meet the mermaids."
"I..." There was hesitation in Camellia's voice.
"And you, Finn, you want to find the land."
Marina added.
"You don't have to convince me; I'm already in." Finn replied.
"Yesss, but ohh, Finn, you forget you'll have to ask your mom then." Camellia smirked.
"Finn!" Someone outside was yelling the boy's name.
"Speaking of your mom," Fairy said.
"Oh no, she is here!" Finn gasped.
