Chapter 8:
Betrayed by my group, I walk alone in the shadows of the other world
The negotiations with Christopher were about to begin — I couldn't afford to get tense at any moment, so I had to go all out right away.
– Let’s stop the stalling and get straight to the point: you take the maids and commoners by force and do whatever you please with them. – I told him.
– How dare you make such an accusation against someone of the nobility like me?! – asked Christopher.
If he thinks I’m like Margarida, who gets intimidated by shouting, he’s sorely mistaken.
– Clarice told me that. – I said to him.
He then let out a smile.
– You don’t know anything about this world. That woman is lying to you. Since you come from another world I’m not surprised you fell for that lie, but Princess Margarida falling for it is disappointing. – Christopher said with an ironic smile.
This worm speaks as if I were inexperienced and lived in peace all my life. The reality is that this world isn’t so different from mine: in my world, politicians control the poor, and in this world the king does that; in my world employers exploit employees, and in this world nobles exploit the poor. Besides, this world even has poor people who love to exploit others — something we also have in my world — and there must also be prejudice against races that aren’t human here.
So if this vermin thinks he can win an argument against me, he’s very mistaken.
– In my world I was known as a ladies’ man; every woman I interacted with quickly fell for me. It seems this world isn’t different — that’s what happened with Clarice and Princess Margarida. In fact, I’ve already kissed both of them today. – I said to him.
– What are you saying?! – Christopher asked, desperate.
– Exactly what you heard. – I said with a smile.
Of course I was lying. I’d never been popular with women in Japan; both at school and as a child they found me strange. I always tried to befriend girls, but they would look down on me a few minutes into the conversation after I started talking about my tastes. At first I was sad, but over time I got used to it and stopped caring when I was rejected.
– Call the two of them here and I’ll show you I’m telling the truth. – I told him.
– Very well. – Christopher replied.
Christopher got up from his chair and opened the door of his office; he then called Margarida and Clarice. The two entered the office and he closed the door behind them.
– Princess, this man says that you and that woman kissed him today. Do you confirm that? – asked Christopher.
Margarida looked at me with an irritated expression.
– The princess’s look says it all; you’re lying. – Christopher told me.
– That’s not it, you idiot. I’m looking at him like this because he didn’t tell me about the kiss he gave Clarice. By the way, Araya, who kisses better, me or Clarice? – asked Margarida.
– So the kissing story is true? – Christopher asked, frightened.
– Yes. If you want, I can prove it right now.
I smiled broadly at Margarida and Clarice.
– Let’s show this guy who’s telling the truth, shall we? – I asked the two of them.
They said yes, so I stood up from my chair, went over to them, grabbed each of them by the waist with one hand, and first kissed Princess Margarida.
– That was so good. – Margarida said.
Now I kissed Clarice.
– You’re improving; you must’ve followed the tips I gave you. – Clarice said.
I kept holding both of them by the waist and the three of us looked at Christopher.
– So, do you believe me now? – I asked him with an ironic smile.
He had an enraged look on his face.
– That is not the real Princess Margarida! – Christopher shouted, furious.
– What are you saying? Don’t tell me you’ve gone mad from seeing the princess kiss me? – I asked him.
– The princess would never do something like that with someone she just met, much less someone from another world. Besides, why would she help a stranger? This means that the person is someone transformed into the princess. – Christopher said desperately.
I started laughing at the worm who was totally desperate.
– Hey princess, could you expose this guy’s dirty secrets? – I asked Margarida.
– With pleasure. – Margarida responded.
– If you were really Princess Margarida you wouldn’t be stupid enough to say that to this man, because you and your father have dirty secrets that I also know. – Christopher said.
Margarida probably wouldn’t be able to counterattack, so I needed to act quickly.
– Do you think you can confront the king and come out on top? – I asked Christopher.
– You don’t know the things I know about him — replied Christopher with a smile.
Now I was going to use my ace up the sleeve.
– Have you forgotten that I’m a ladies’ man? – I asked him with a smile on my face.
– What does that have to do with what we’re talking about now? – Christopher asked me.
– I can seduce your mother and make her obey me. Then you know what’ll happen to you. – I answered Christopher.
He started trembling with fear.
– Not my mother, please don’t do that to my mom. – Christopher begged, falling to his knees.
What a pathetic scene, but I was immensely happy to see the vermin being humiliated.
– You already know what you must do. – I said to him.
– I swear I don’t know. – said Christopher.
This vermin still wanted to play smart with me, but since I had everything under control I decided to resolve it peacefully.
– I want you to withdraw the theft accusation against the Zairos family; also you will go on foot with us to the commoners’ district to apologize to the Zairos family, and you will bring a gift as an apology for what happened. – I told him.
Christopher looked at me with hatred in his eyes.
– You can’t force me to do that! – Christopher shouted.
– Want to try your luck? But remember your mommy will be all mine. – I said with a broad smile.
He became terrified.
– I was only testing to see if it was true, of course I’ll follow your orders. – said Christopher.
– From today on you will help me with everything I need. Understood? – I asked him.
– Understood, yes sir. I will be your lackey from now on. – Christopher answered.
– Now let’s go to the commoners’ district so you can apologize. – I told him.
So the four of us left the Bellmarck residence and walked on foot to the commoners’ district so that nobody would notice us.
– My legs are hurting, let’s take a break. – Christopher said.
– Stop complaining, you need to lose a few pounds. – I answered him.
The truth is that I was starting to get tired too — after all, I had walked quite a bit that day. We arrived at the Zairos house and the four of us entered. Clarice’s husband and children were waiting for her there.
– Mommy!!! – Sairo shouted.
Her son ran full speed and hugged her.
– Mother... where were you? – Sabrina asked, crying.
They all noticed Christopher and Margarida and began to tremble.
– Don’t worry, he won’t do anything to you. I’ll explain everything.
I started telling my made-up story: I invented that Margarida and I had taken Clarice to a healer in the noble district to cure her.
– So you helped my mother by taking her to a healer? That’s great. So Miyamoto is Princess Margarida in disguise. – Sabrina said excitedly.
– But we still don’t understand what Christopher came here for. – Beltrond said.
I would have to invent more stories. The worst part was inventing tales that would help make those filthy nobles look like good people. The good part was being able to humiliate those nobles.
– The truth is we ran into the noble Christopher Bellmarck on the way and he discovered who the culprit was. – I told everyone.
Everyone looked confused.
– So it really was a setup? – asked Beltrond.
– Actually it was a misunderstanding. – I answered Beltrond.
Everyone was confused again.
– Hero, explain clearly so we can understand. – Beltrond said.
– The culprit is Christopher himself; he left the Ballmarck family’s apple when he visited you because he wanted to give Clarice some time off since he noticed she had been quite tired. – I replied to Beltrond.
Clarice and Christopher had frightened expressions. Beltrond looked at Clarice.
– Clarice, you were alone with the noble Christopher; why didn’t you tell me before? – Beltrond asked.
Clarice started to cry.
– I didn’t want to hurt you, so I preferred not to say anything. – Clarice replied.
– Clarice, how could you do this to me? We trusted each other. – Beltrond said.
Sabrina and Sairo seemed very sad by their parents’ argument; I would have to smooth things over.
– At what point did either I or Clarice say that she betrayed you with the noble Christopher? – I asked Beltrond.
– But it’s just that... – Beltrond began, then was interrupted.
– You idiot, today I could see how much this woman loves you. She only accepted Christopher’s apology if he gave you a job, and if she didn’t tell you it’s because she knew how you would react. – I replied to him.
Beltrond began to cry.
– Clarice, my love, forgive me for doubting you. You are a magnificent woman. – Beltrond said.
I was holding myself back from laughing out loud; this guy was too much of a cuckold.
– Dad, you’re going to get a new job. – said Sairo.
Everyone was happy with the news.
– Sir Christopher, what kind of job would that be? – Beltrond asked.
– How... how about guard of my house... yes, that’s it, you’ll be in charge of protecting my house. – Christopher said.
Sairo had lost his job because of the theft accusation the Zairos family suffered.
– I can’t believe this, I’m really happy. – Beltrond said.
– Hey Christopher, could you show Beltrond your house now, what do you think? – I asked Christopher.
Christopher looked at me fearfully and agreed to the idea. Christopher and Beltrond left the house heading toward the Ballmarck residence. Besides, I was thinking of leaving already with Margarida.
– Hey everyone, Margarida and I need to leave now. – I told them.
– Are you sure you’re leaving already? – Clarice asked.
– Yes, I need to talk to Princess Margarida alone. – I answered Clarice.
– Wouldn’t you at least stay for dinner? – Sabrina asked.
Margarida kissed me and then put her left hand over her mouth.
– Didn’t you hear? He wants to talk to me alone. – Margarida said.
– Hey Margarida, don’t say that in front of them. – I said.
I had to be careful using Slime’s Pleasure on Margarida; she gets very horny when she’s under its effect. I then said goodbye to Clarice, Sabrina, and Sairo. I hoped to see the Zairos family more often.
– Where are we going? – Margarida asked.
– To the fields. – I answered her.
She looked puzzled.
– But aren’t there slimes in those fields? – Margarida asked.
– Beltrond showed me a part where there are no monsters. – I answered her.
– Oh right, now that you mention it I remember there weren’t any monsters when I was protecting the boy Sairo. – Margarida said.
So Margarida and I went to the part of the fields where there were no monsters. She then clung to me, putting her face close to mine; I still couldn’t get used to that even though we had kissed twice already that day.
– So what do you want to talk to me about? – Margarida asked.
– It’s about my equipment. – I answered her.
Margarida pulled her arms away from me.
– I thought you wanted to talk to me about something else. – she said.
– What did you think I wanted to talk about? – I asked her.
– I thought you wanted to talk about that thing boys and girls do when they’re together. – she replied angrily.
I started to think until I reached a conclusion.
– Don’t tell me you were thinking about what boys and girls do together? – I asked her.
– That’s right. – she said.
I have to tone down the effect of Slime’s Pleasure on Margarida.
– We can’t think about that yet. – I told her.
– How not? I’m nineteen and you’re eighteen. – she said.
– Wait, you’re older than me? I thought you were younger; I thought you were about fifteen. – I said.
She blushed.
– I’m really glad you think that. By the way, I suspect what you want to know about your equipment. – Margarida said.
– Did you and your father trick me? – I asked her.
– Actually I’m not sure we can say he tricked you or not, because the truth is we really don’t know anything about a hero from another world with the ability to copy other skills, since a hero with that ability has never appeared in our world. – Margarida replied.
So it seems my ability is something pretty complicated to figure out. I kept thinking about my ability until Margarida said something that surprised me.
– My father thought you might be useless, so he decided to do a one-month test with the heroes. He would reinforce the training if the healing heroine, the strength hero, and the marksman heroine failed. – Margarida said.
– And what about me? – I asked Margarida.
– If you fail, you will be killed. – Margarida answered.
I could not believe what I was hearing.
– Besides, I agreed with my father’s decision. – Margarida added.
I couldn’t let that happen.
– Hey Margarida, just one question: do you know information about the other heroes’ abilities? – I asked her.
– Unfortunately I don’t know everything. I only know that each hero can use equipment made from materials related to the abilities they received, but in your case it’s strange. – Margarida replied.
Do the other heroes have equipment limits?
– What do you mean your case is strange? – I asked her.
– Any person can only use equipment made with materials tied to the skill they received — for example, Nakamura received the Holy Cure skill and she can only use equipment made from healing materials. – Margarida explained.
– But what would happen if she used equipment made from different materials? – I asked her.
– Her power would be reduced. But in your case I suspect that you might be able to use any equipment without being affected; maybe this is a major discovery. – Margarida replied.
So it’s like RPG games where there are buffs and debuffs and each person can only equip gear from the category of the chosen hero. But it seems I’m the type of character who can use any equipment; my stats are probably the weakest of the four heroes, but that still gives me an advantage against them. Things are starting to get interesting in my favor.
