Chapter 8:

Witches?

Swim!

The girl had long, straight violet hair all the way to her knees and magenta eyes.
She was wearing a dress underneath the black coat and boots on her legs. The girl appeared to be around the same age as the three of them. In one hand she was carrying the luggage, and in the other, the book.
"No worries." She said so quietly that they barely heard her. In the next moment, the girl left and disappeared in the crowd.
"Ahh, let's move along." Camellia seemed slightly upset, though she tried to hide it.
"You know her?" Marina asked the fairy.
"What, no." Camellia crossed her arms. She was clearly angry about it.
"I don't know her personally, but I could smell from afar what she is."
"Based on the way you sound, don't tell me she is—
"She is a witch." Camellia said with a serious tone in her voice.
"You have witches too? I thought there were only humans, fairies, mermaids, and plameni... umm, plammm...
"Plamenians," Finn said.
"Yes, thanks. So are there more different kinds?" Marina sounded curious.
"No, that's it. Witches... They shouldn't exist." Camellia still sounded upset.
Oof, this must be something personal. I mean, I wouldn't be so surprised to hear that witches are evil or something since in our world they are often portrayed as villains in works of fiction, but of course it depends on the interpretation. There are some really great stories where witches are the good guys or the typical misunderstood-by-society trope, but I still read those.
Marina was thinking in her head.
"Is it really that bad?" Marina finally asked her.
"Ahh... I can see by the look on your face that I caused a misunderstanding. What I meant was, they naturally shouldn't exist. How witches came to be in this world... is unnatural. In short, you can't be born as a witch; you become one. I personally don't like talking about them, as witches are a shame for our kind, but since you're not from here and you don't know, I'll tell you." Camellia had a serious look on her face.
"Well, it's true that I would like to know, but I won't push it if you don't feel comfortable talking about it." Marina replied.
It definitely seems like a heavy topic.
She thought.
"No, it's okay, I'll tell you. It's better that I warn you so you know in the future to stay away from them." The fairy paused for a moment before continuing.
"You see, witches used to be fairies before, but they were greedy for more magical power; fairy magic apparently wasn't enough for them, so they did the unthinkable for our kind... In order to gain more magic fast, they took their own wings and ate them. Fairy wings contain a lot of magic, but to do that... To eat your own wings, as a fairy, it makes me feel sick to my stomach. Of course there were consequences... Witches can't give birth to fairies, nor can the child be born from them with any magical abilities; their children are cursed, with zero magic. But to selfish witches, of course, that doesn't mean a lot. At least that was the damage they caused to themselves, but the damage they caused to us fairies... You see, witches weren't the only ones who figured there was magic in our wings. Thanks to them, for years our kind was hunted by fairy hunters. People wanting to obtain the fairy magic for themselves. It was horrible. However, once they realized how eating the wings did nothing to them, as of course that wouldn't work on a human, they had another idea. Not knowing what to do with all these wings, hunters sold them to people. Then we had crazy collectors who wanted to buy fairy wings, and oh, only decades later, humans banned it. This all happened before the land disappeared. Even though it was long ago, we fairies are still upset because not only did the witches never apologize for the trouble they caused to our ancestors, but also after everything that happened, they still eat their wings. You know what the witches said? They said, "It's not our fault; don't blame us for other people's actions." Ughh, the arrogance. And, after the land disappeared, of course they were forced to come back here. We unfortunately had to let them in; I mean, where else would they go? Now if we were selfish as them, we wouldn't care, but no one wants to sink that low."
"That's horrible."
Marina commented.
"Yes, but enough about witches; let's go grab something to eat." Camellia wanted to switch the topic.
The three of them wandered in the port, looking around as the time flew.
"I think we should get back," Finn said.
"We only have fifteen minutes left, and trust me, you don't want to be late in front of my mom." He added.
"True, let's go back." Camellia chuckled.
They ran fast through the crowd.
"Ugh, we won't make it in time; there are too many people." Finn was worried.
"Ohh, I know." Camellia had an idea.
"Hang on!" The fairy said.
She flew up in the air and cast a levitation spell on Finn and Marina. Suddenly the two of them were in the air as well.
"Camellia, you could have warned us." Finn was afraid to look down.
"True." Marina agreed.
"Oh, but I did." The fairy smirked.
"Come on, we don't have much time left. It's faster like this." Camellia said to them.
They flew over the crowd and made it just in time. The fairy safely landed Finn and Marina.
"Right on time." Camellia smiled.
Marina was staring at the magnificent sight in front of her, a huge flying ship that people from this world call an albatross.
"It's so big!" Marina was amazed.
It was a black ship with a golden feather logo on the side.
"Oh, there you are." Finn's mother said from the ship.
"Hurry up; other passengers will be here any minute. Quickly. I want to avoid the crowd so I can show you your cabins and around in peace." Miss Cherry explained.
The three of them rushed onto the flying ship.
"Welcome to Golden Feather!" Crew members greeted Finn, Marina, and Camellia as they were boarding a ship.
