Chapter 20:

The Battle of Opalis: Part I

Re:Admin

The sudden appearance of Aeriys, raining divine healing upon the undead, had turned the tide of battle. The undead army surged forward, their ranks bolstered by her power, and Opalis teetered on the precipice of destruction. As Mirai courageously escorted Eyrie's mother to safety, a figure emerged from the shadows, a deadly archer with a chillingly precise aim and a bow crackling with unearthly energy.

General Zephyr, summoned by Aeriys, drew back the string of his bow, an arrow of pure, malevolent energy forming between his fingers. His gaze, cold and calculating, locked onto Eyrie's fleeing parents, easy targets amidst the chaos. He took aim, his movements deliberate and ruthless.

Thwack! The arrow hurtled through the air, striking with deadly accuracy. Eyrie's father, caught completely unaware, cried out as the arrow pierced his heart. He stumbled, collapsing to the ground, his eyes widening in disbelief and agony.

Mirai reacted instantly, whirling around and deflecting a second arrow aimed at Eyrie's mother with her futuristic sword. But it was too late. Eyrie's father was gone.

A wave of despair washed over Eyrie, a raw, agonizing pain that threatened to consume her. She sobbed uncontrollably, her grief a tangible presence in the war-torn street. Admin, seeing her distress, placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, his face etched with empathy.

“It’s alright Eyrie, we’re all here for you, don’t give up, don’t cry” Admin said as he saw her pain, and teared up.

“This is our chance!” Mirai announced. "Eyrie's parents are dead, or now she can carry on their legacy"

Withdrawing Admin and the rest of his party, Lady Reyus whispered "It's the Goddess, she's controlling them, she's controlling everyone!" "These generals, and the army, it's all her fault!"

Admin looked at Lady Reyus, and realized they had something to do. They all understood they had to fight.

Admin, fueled by grief and a burning desire for justice, knew they had to eliminate the source of the chaos. “Mirai, we need to take out those generals,” he said, his voice tight with resolve. “If we can disrupt the chain of command, we might have a chance."

Mirai nodded grimly, her red and black sword humming with murderous intent. Together, they charged into the heart of the battle, a whirlwind of destruction cutting through the undead horde. Tundra tracked their movements, providing tactical information and support.

They located General Sylo first, the cunning strategist directing the undead with chilling precision. Admin engaged him in close combat, his movements fluid and deadly, the energy swords dancing through the air. Sylo fought with skill, but Admin's relentless assault soon overwhelmed him. With a final, desperate strike, Admin plunged his energy sword through Sylo's heart, silencing his commands.

Mirai faced off against General Vorlag, the brute force of the undead army. The clash of their weapons shook the ground, the air thick with the stench of blood and decay. Vorlag fought with savage ferocity, his mace a whirlwind of destruction. But Mirai was agile and elusive, her futuristic sword finding its mark, severing Vorlag's limbs and finally, his head.

With Sylo and Vorlag dispatched, they turned their attention to General Zephyr, the archer who had stolen Eyrie's father's life. Zephyr stood atop a ruined building, raining down arrows upon the fleeing citizens. Admin and Mirai, fueled by grief and rage, scaled the building, their movements swift and deadly.

Zephyr fought with desperate skill, his arrows whistling through the air. But Admin and Mirai were too fast, too determined. Mirai leaped forward, her red and black sword slicing through the air, severing Zephyr's bow arm. Admin followed up with a final, decisive strike, ending the general's life.

But with the generals fallen, a new, even more terrifying threat emerged. The sky tore open, and glowing yellow portals began to appear above the battlefield. From these portals emerged winged figures, clad in golden armor, their faces serene and deadly. Angels.

Aeriys had unleashed her ultimate weapon, and Opalis was about to face a heavenly host as deadly as the undead horde. The battle had only just begun, and the stakes had just been raised to a divine level.

The emergence of the angels shifted the battle into a new, terrifying phase. These weren't benevolent protectors; they were warriors of divine wrath, their golden armor gleaming with righteous fury, their swords radiating celestial power. They descended upon the battlefield, cutting down undead and mortals alike, their attacks precise and merciless.

“Report, Tundra!” Admin yelled, dodging a beam of radiant energy that seared the ground where he had been standing.

"Angels are systematically targeting key strategic points," Tundra replied, her TV-head flashing with threat assessments. "They're eliminating anyone who resists, regardless of allegiance. Their priority appears to be the complete annihilation of Opalis."

“It's up to us!” Mirai said, jumping to action.

As the battle raged, Reyus stood beside the modified forklift, her eyes narrowed in concentration. The angels were powerful, but they weren't invincible. She could feel their divine energy, their connection to Aeriys, and she knew there had to be a way to disrupt it.

She put her hand on Admin's head, and told them the truth.

"Admin, I know what's going on," she said, her voice calm despite the chaos around them. "Aeriys is using those angels as puppets, but her control is…fragile. She's focusing all her power into them, leaving herself vulnerable."

Admin frowned. "Vulnerable how?"

"If we can somehow disrupt her connection to the angels, break her concentration, we might have a chance," Reyus explained. "It's a long shot, but it's the only way I can see us winning."

Admin nodded, his mind racing. "Alright, Reyus, what do you need me to do?"

"I need you to get close to Aeriys," Reyus said. "Distract her, disrupt her concentration. I'll try to sever her connection to the angels from here. It's going to be risky, but we have to try."

Admin knew it was a suicide mission, but he also knew they had no other choice. He looked at Mirai, her face grim but resolute. “Mirai, do you have a plan?”

Mirai nodded. “I’ll come with you, Admin. Someone needs to protect you while you play distraction. We have to do this together.

Admin then looked at the party, knowing they had one chance and one chance only. He looked at Eyrie, still frozen in sorrow beside her mother, he realized it was more than just ending the battle. It was about restoring peace to a devastated land, giving Eyrie and her mother a chance to rebuild their lives. “Let’s go, let’s kill the evil goddess.”

He summoned a sleek, high-speed motorcycle, its engine humming with barely contained power. "Mirai, hop on. We're going for a ride."

As Admin and Mirai prepared to leave, Reyus looked up at the sky, her eyes glowing with a dark, familiar energy. “I am with you, until the end”

Admin revved the engine, the motorcycle leaping forward, leaving a trail of fire in its wake. They sped through the chaotic streets, dodging angels and undead, their path illuminated by bursts of gunfire and the flash of Mirai's sword. They headed straight towards Aeriys, the self-proclaimed Goddess, hoping to bring an end to her reign of terror. The sky was glowing with an evil presence, and it was now that she would pay for everything.

As Admin and Mirai hurtled towards Aeriys, Reyus maintained her focus, her demonic energy a fragile shield against the goddess's relentless attacks. Aeriys, cornered and desperate, unleashed a final act of defiance.

From a swirling vortex in the sky emerged a nightmarish abomination – a colossal tentacled beast, its eyes burning with malevolent hunger, its tentacles dripping with corrosive slime.

"Destroy them! Everything!" Aeriys shrieked, her voice cracking with madness.

The tentacled horror lumbered towards Eyrie's mother, who stood protected by Tundra's vigilant presence. The creature seemed to sense the vulnerability of the woman, the recent loss of her husband, making her an easy target.

Admin reacted instantly. He slammed on the brakes, bringing the motorcycle to a screeching halt. This was it. He couldn't let another innocent life be taken.

With a swift motion, he summoned his custom pistol, a weapon forged with cutting-edge technology, capable of firing bullets imbued with hellfire. The pistol felt cold and familiar in his grip, a symbol of his unwavering resolve.

He raised the pistol, aiming at the monstrous creature. He had to buy them time, to protect Eyrie and her remaining family.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The pistol roared, spitting out a hail of flaming bullets. The bullets streaked through the air, impacting the tentacled beast, searing its flesh, and forcing it to recoil. But the creature was massive, its hide thick and resistant to the flames.

Admin continued to fire, emptying the clip with relentless precision. The flaming bullets tore into the beast, slowing its advance, but not stopping it.

With a final, desperate lunge, the tentacled horror unleashed one last attack. A massive tentacle, its surface slick with corrosive slime, shot towards Eyrie's mother, moving faster than Admin could react.

Tundra moved to intercept, but it was too late. The tentacle slammed into Eyrie's mother, sending her flying through the air.

Admin roared with rage, his bullets finding their mark, tearing into the creature's exposed heart. The tentacled horror convulsed, its eyes dimming as it finally succumbed to the fiery onslaught. The beast collapsed, its lifeless form crashing to the ground, creating a cloud of dust and debris.

But the victory came at a terrible cost. Eyrie's mother lay motionless on the ground, her body broken and bleeding.

Eyrie rushed to her mother's side, her heart pounding with dread. She cradled her in her arms, her tears falling on her mother's blood-soaked face.

Her mothers eyes began to glow,

"Eyrie… darling," she gasped, her voice barely a whisper. "There's something… you need to know. About why we left you…"

"Mom, please, save your strength!" Eyrie pleaded, tears streaming down her face.

"No… no time," she whispered, her grip tightening on Eyrie's hand. "Arcvon… it’s a cruel place."

She paused, struggling to breathe. "Our religion… it demands sacrifice… especially from the poor."

Eyrie stared at her mother, her mind struggling to comprehend. "Sacrifice? What do you mean?"

"We left you… in the Whispering Woods," her mother confessed, tears streaming down her own face. "Not because we didn’t love you… but because we loved you too much."

She choked back a sob. "The priests… they said you were chosen… to appease the gods… to ensure a good harvest, to protect the town. We couldn't… we couldn't let them take you."

Eyrie’s face was covered in tears, but as she began to hold her mother, the mother smiled, and realized how nice her daughter really was.

"We hoped… someone would find you… someone kind… who would give you a better life than we ever could," her mother continued, her voice barely audible. "We prayed… every day… that you would be safe… happy…"

With a final, shuddering breath, Eyrie's mother closed her eyes, her body going limp in her daughter's arms. Eyrie cried out, a primal scream of anguish that echoed through the battlefield. She clutched her mother's lifeless body, her tears mingling with her blood. Admin could only feel sorrow and nothingness.
