Chapter 29:

Attack on Titan

FLIPSIDE

Chapter 29 - Attack on Titan

There before the three of us stands the massive titan of darkness. A threat not once fathomed or expected to be battled so close to the end. But if it's a fight it wants, it's a fight it's going to get!

The titan slowly lifts up its leg, then kicks it into the ground with incredible force. Launching Lala and Gil back again.

This fight is mine!

As my body too is launched by the monster’s attack, I cast my [Static Spear], to hook shot my way up its body.

FWOOSH–

The shovel flies forth, cutting into the arm of the beast. Despite its erratically moving skin, there’s still something solid beneath!

SNAP–

With a snap, my body is pulled instantly to the place of impact granting me a face full of withering stone. I wave off the injury and charge up the gate guardian’s arm.

At this point the monster has realized my presence and attempts to swat me away, likely seeing me as just a little bug crawling up its arm. It’s open palm swooping across completely absorbing everything in my point of view!

But I can reflect it, with my own hand–[Electrostatic Discharge]! My voltaic gauntlets let out a sudden flash expanding with even more power.

KABLAMMO–

My hand collides with the titan’s outstretched palm, shattering off bolts of zigzagging black electricity. But despite making its hand stop, it barely even nudged the massive limb backward.

The titan’s hand closes slightly, appearing as if preparing to flick me off like the little critter I am.

That’s not a good sign…

BLAM–

Still recovering from the failed parry, the monster flicks me, launching me barreling off to its side.

SNAP–

SNAP–

With quick thinking I manage to ground myself, throwing a [Static Spear] below to anchor to the battlefield.

Lala and Gil rush over to my aid.

“King–what are we going to do? Your lightning barely left a scratch on that thing!

“It's true, the titan was unfazed by my attempts to wound it. Do you have any ideas, Coach?”

“Uhhhh–I can’t say I do, my amplification magic would only make your lightning stronger I’m pretty sure. Seeing as one of your strongest skills barely moved it I don’t see this combo working out in the slightest…”

Before we can begin to plan our attack, the rumbling halts for a moment, and the beast…vanishes? Now it's above us, a shadow of the colossus rains down from the sky, the titan’s fist now flying earthbound into our exact position.

“RUN!”

But we can’t get out of the way, there’s not enough time!

There’s a cold air about this all.

To die here, when we were so close.

There’s no way I can accept losing like this…

And yet.

In the end, the only certainty is that we stand by our choices without regret.

“STOPPP!!!”

A cloud of stone and darkness dusts my eyes. I feel a sharp pain on my forearms and back, it feels like I’ve awoken from a long slumber.

“Where are we again? What was I doing up until now? And won’t somebody turn off that light, I just want to sleep for five more minutes…”

My eyes shutter closed–

“ –GET OUT OF HERE–”

“Huh?”

“WE NEED TO RUN, NOW!”

“What, why?”

My eyes blink open finding the source of the light–

“Eryth? Is that you… You came back to us–”

“WAKE UP, KING!”

“KING!!!”

“YOU NEED TO MOVE!”

My eyes finally adjust to the scene in front of me. It’s not Eryth, rather it's Gil! And shaking my body is Lala with tears streaming down his cheeks.

“Where are we?”

“We need to move, now King!”

“Wait what about Gil–”

“ …”

Lala tugs on my arm with more force.

“What about Gil–Lala we can’t escape without him!”

“It’s okay King–”

That radiant glow is coming from Gil, it illuminates all across his body through each channel of blood. He’s shaking, pushing upward against the titan’s fist.

“If anyone’s going to save the world it's going to be you… Now go!”

“What? What no? No, I need you too! I’ll save you, I can protect you! I promised I would!”

Gil only smiles, shaking his head. The small crevice between us and chances of getting pancaked growing closer by the second.

“No–no you can’t make that decision for me! It's not what I want! I would never do that!”

“Come on King–we have to get out of here… he–he can’t die in vain.”

Lala can’t talk straight.

“We-can’t-we must get out of here King… Please.”

WHY? WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

As Lala continues to tug at my body, Gil gives him the final push he needs to kick us out of there.

CRUSH–

The massive fist lifts from the earth…

In its wake…

Shimmering radiant blood, still glowing ever faintly.

A tattered frog onesie stained.

He’s… gone.

A beat, a drum, a storm.

My Soul, my magic, my rage.

Black electricity engulfs my body in galvanized plate armor much stronger than times before. It gives me monstrous claws, a tail of sparks, jagged wings of lightning, and the fangs of a dragon! Doubling my height and altering the form of the shovel in the process as well. The shovel sharpens and elongates into something more akin to a spear of blue lightning.

“I’LL KILL YOU!”

With lightning speed I warp up the body of the titan, dragging the shovel spear across its armored body. With all my might I jump to its blank face casting down a spear that will pierce even the heavens!

“Enemy of mankind! You will not exist another minute in my world! TITAN, YOU’RE DEAD!

“I call upon a storm of blades, a monsoon of power, I cast [HEAVEN PIERCER]!”

The shovel hovers above me electrifying into pure power. As its power grows it expands outward creating smaller versions of itself in a web of electricity. Dark spears cover the skies all around the titan, and on my command they will fall.

WHOOOSH–

My hand falls on the titan launching countless spears of pure darkness down upon its form. As each blade of power cuts into the titan it completely eradicates that piece of it, leaving it swiss cheese.

The titan collapses, sending it to one knee.

But the withering continues to flow through it. Those wounds only begin to close, as its body regenerates the damage done.

“NOOOO!”

“AGAIN!”

[HEAVEN PIERCER!]

Blades of electricity form in the skies once more.

“DIEEEE!”

This time an even greater hail of endless electricity springs forth, the black web spanning across the battlefield.

The titan rises, only to be struck down again by the heat of a thousand suns.

As one spear of lightning breaks through it another follows closely behind, quickly draining the magic stored within me taking energy from the armor, until there’s nothing left.

The storm of lightning breaks across the battlefield shattering the titan’s form, cloaking it in a fog of kicked up dust.

“NO! NO WAY!”

Hidden in the cloud a shadow begins to reform… The titan is unfazed.

Falling out of the air I crash to the ground as the rumbling footfalls break the obscuring cloud.

No–This can’t be happening, why? Why did he have to die? GILLL!

The titan rematerializes.

It's whole again.

I’ve achieved nothing.

CRACK–

I’m–

A light covers the sky, is it the sun? It's so warm, full of life.

Wait, that’s?

A second titan?

It punched the black one!

The glowing golden titan towers overhead, putting up its arms to guard itself.

“GIL!”

At the foot of the golden glowing titan, stood Gil, his body completely restored to normal, mimicking the movements of the giant stationed in the direction behind him. Or rather that might–it's coming from him!

“WHAT’S GOING ON!?”

“I’ve got magic too, King! My golden experience, my [Lifelight]! I’ve always been stronger than most, but it seems there really was a reason behind it… This giant is the source of that strength, I don’t get it yet exactly but I can hear the voices of countless Souls carried within it, they collectively are granting me the power to persevere!”

No way–that would mean he’s the ultimate opposite to a withering monster. If as the Demon Lord says is true, that countless Souls really make up each withering demon. Then he’s just like them! But still human!

“Now step out of the way King, it's time I take care of this loser!”

Gil slaps his fists together, causing his giant to do the same. The titan of darkness stands up against him, towering just a bit taller above his golden form.

“Who does this guy think he is! Hurting my brothers! I’ll make him pay!”

Gil’s giant sweeps the titan’s legs out from under it, lifting them up into the air without faltering. His strength overwhelms the titan far more than my electricity ever could!

“The Souls inside me gave me this power to protect others, and defeat demons like you! They fear you, they despise your existence! As do I!”

Gil pile drives the titan into the entrance of the lab, devastating its walls creating an opening for us to move forward. As the titan lays there twitching with slight movements, Gil returns with one more attack.

“I’m sending you back to where you came from! Back to the dark hole you crawled out of!”

Taking the titans legs again, Gil’s giant spins in circles whipping the withering titan around and around. With each revolution increasing in greater speeds.

“SO LONG DARK TITAN!!”

FLOOOSH–

The titan is sent flying into the air toward the black spire, as it gets closer to it, its body begins rapidly deteriorating as the dark particles it was made up of get sucked into the dark fountain.

Leaving the final battle just before us.

The Demon Lord’s castle!
