Chapter 574:

Bungle it

En Passant Grandmaster

"Hey, Saloni Madhok here in my own little studio, here in my hotel room. So, I didn't get the chance to do this earlier, so let's rectify it by going over some of the favorites in this tournament," Saloni stated as she pulled up an infographic on screen.

First up were standings with only the top 10 listed despite there being multiple players currently tied at one point. Currently, the standings were as follows:

1. Yumi, 1 point

2. Okisato, 1 point

3. Hagemi, 1 point

4. Iori, 1 point

5. Rize, 1 point

6. Noa, 1 point

7. Alice, 1 point

8. Mimosa, 1 point

9. Mimoko, 1 point

10. Arina, 1 point

"Lots of familiar names here, in fact, all but Rize and Yumi were present at the Chess Olympics. Of course, not everyone was playing for Team Japan. Noa, Alice, Mimosa, Arina, and even Hagemi were all on different teams, though in Hagemi's case, she was brainwashed. Speaking of which, there are quite a few participants here that played on different teams in Budapest, but re-registered with the Japanese federation prior to the tournament's start. These folks include Alma Mata, Matsuba Yuhi, and Arii Eyepelter. It's also worth mentioning that Ichiko Rojas has changed federations after apparently moving to Japan for a teaching gig, with the daughter of American grandmaster, Elenora Broadstone, Emmie, now registered with Japan as well. In regards to the rules, federation swaps had to be made one month prior to the tournament's start if a player didn't have mixed Japanese heritage or was previously registered with the Japanese chess federation. Emmie barely made the cutoff, which is why she's here.

Images of Esma, Francie, Ayane, Mayane, Urraca, and Suzuna then flashed on screen.

"And these are some of the other folks from other federations with Japanese heritage that were invited to participate. Plus, there are some others as well. Anyway, I'd love to spend hours upon hours talking about who's hot who's not, but it's only the night after the first round. Maybe after the rest day after round 4, we'll talk more about who could possibly win it. Well, by for now. Oh, and Yuusuke, I'm rooting for ya. Don't let me down, otherwise I get shaved bald and covered in tattoos, and you wouldn't want that happening to a cute girl like me. Well, bye!"

...

Hagemi frowned as she watched Saloni's broadcast. "That's just stupid. Why're you betting body and beauty for Yuusuke? Are you in love with him or something? And those conditions... OI, YUUSUKE!"

Yuusuke quickly came tumbling into the room.

"Yuusuke, you don't like bald tattooed women, do you?"

"What!? Hell no! What gave you that dumb impression!? Tanabe's the freak into that shit!"

"Then you better crack 2000, otherwise some girl's gonna shave her head and ink her entire body up," Hagemi snarled as she shoved her phone in Yuusuke's face.

Yuusuke went silent as he was shown clips of Saloni making the bet, then her wishing for his success. He didn't say a word aloud, simply turning back and slowly retreating to his room.

"Great. I have no idea what'll happen now. Saloni, if he bungles it, I'm sorry."
