Chapter 2:

Operating System

Death Game. I'm not the protagonist, am I?

Running through the woods, the darker trees would leave place to the brighter ones. The forest became less dense, looking peaceful. But after watching all these streams, you'd know these woods are anything but safe. Now out of breath, he'd stop. He needs a break.

A weird, but familiar sound would take his attention. Like a notification. Looking down, Saito notices a floating text before him. "Level up! You are now level 6"
(Oh right, I forgot about that)

Everything you kill something, you get experience. Levels makes you physically stronger and more resistant. The highest someone has made it to is level 14. Magic is also unlocked at level 10, but as only one person managed to breach that level, very little is known about how it works and its functionality. Levels make you stronger, but unfortunately, unlike most mmorpgs or games online, those don't give you stat points you can distribute to specific things. What you do get however..

"Open skills"

A window would appear before him. There are two type of skills. The passive ones and the active ones. Passive ones are usually perks you had in your life before coming here. Could be something like photographic memory or anything that is outstanding in itself. Active skills are entirely from this world, but usually there's specific requirements or ways to get them. Since nobody got out of the first checkpoint.. Well.. Nobody has gotten any.

"The lack of active skills and magic knowledge actually sucks."

His eyes would move toward the passive skills. There's several.
The first one, of a rainbow colour, which signifies to be very rare is called "Adrenaline surge".
(Yeah.. I know about that one.)

Adrenaline surge refers to a weird condition he has. Generally, adrenaline is produced by a gland in the kidneys. His are however unusually large, producing much more adrenaline than needed. This can result in gaining hysterical strength, at the cost of low blood pressure or fainting once it goes out. (Is this why I was brought here? Because of this? Well. I did kill two people already).

The ones below that. "Fast learning" and "Excellent memory)  in a golden colour.
Signifies that it is rare.
(Yeah, I can see that I think. I do recall most of the streams. Seeing this kind of boosts my ego.)

Below those is another rainbow skill. But it is currently unreadable. Perhaps it is to be unlocked?
All heroes sent here recently have an unreadable rainbow skill. But it has never manifested.

(I should aim for level 10. I really want magic).
The best way to farm exp here is to kill goblins in the woods. But just because they're goblins doesn't mean they're not deadly. One stab and you're probably going to bleed out or die from an infection. Maybe he's much stronger now with 6 levels? It's hard to gauge.
There's also bigger goblins and the goblin king. Usually if you kill a couple goblins, the big one shows up. But the biggest danger in the woods are the bandits. They'll ransack you and potentially kill you. Some players have joined the bandits instead, but if you remain alive for a week, an assassin is sent after you. Nobody has ever survived that.
(Maybe I could kill them for more exp? If they gang up on me though I won't manage that).

Hard to choose. And then, the village. Very friendly people. By doing some labour, they allow you to stay over while providing food and shelter. They're a bit worry of outsiders now since they just keep dying. Why wouldn't they be?

(Wait no.. The thieves aren't the worst one. The werewolf is. But he only shows up at night, so I guess I can farm at day and stay in the village at night.)

Sounds like a plan. Saito would look up the sky. The sun is still high.
"Okay, I'll do some more today"

He'd reach up into "his" bag to fetch a ration, promptly eating it, remembering his hunger.
He was about to eat before being shoved in this world. How improper.
Oh well.
A lot of people has been thinking. Maybe there's another menu? Like a skills shop? Or maybe an actual skill tree or stats? But coming here doesn't come with an instruction manual. Couple people that came here started spouting whatever came to mind to make any other menu appear, without result. (I won't waste my time with that).

Looking through the bag, he'd find a gourd he didn't notice before, still half full of water, much to his satisfaction. Once done drinking and eating, he'd pack everything into his new bag and stand up. (Goblin hunting it is.).

"Pretty sure.. That it's to the left of the town. So.. That way."

He'd begin walking for roughly 2 hours. At the distance he notices multiple smoke lines raising above the trees. Surely the village is cooking meals at the moment. The black haired man would unsheathe his sword clumsily, ready for battle. Goblin are fairly common in this area. He'd walk further away from the village, eventually finding marks on the tree.

(I've seen those before. Goblins leave these on the trees to mark their territory. I'm definitely at the right place).

Following the marks, it wouldn't take too long for a small green creature to notice him a bit further.
The goblin raises his rusted dagger at him, loudly speaking in gibberish.

"Sure, try me."
(I have no idea what he said).

As expected, the goblin would run his way to engage.
Lucky their population is large. Goblins tend to attack everything so they don't live long. Otherwise they would've gone extinct for sure.

As the goblin rushes closer, Saito grabs the sword with both hands, and times his swing just as the goblin reaches him. Of one quick, swift strike, much to his surprise, the goblin doesn't have time to react and gets sliced in half, falling to the floor.

(I haven't noticed, but the sword is much lighter than it was when I first grabbed it. I knew levels make a difference, but I didn't think it was going to be by this much.)

Now much more confident, he'd walk ahead to find more. This was rather underwhelming.

"Open menu"
He'd glance at the exp. It went from 12 to 17. 17/60. So he'd need to kill what? 9 more?
The survivor would smile.
(Maybe I have a chance. If I take risks and snowball my levels until I become much much stronger, then maybe I can breach the checkpoint nobody has succeeded at beating.)

There's the plan.
I have to become as strong as possible, as fast as possible by taking calculated risks.
Hopefully it doesn't cost my life.
