Chapter 3:

To become stronger

Death Game. I'm not the protagonist, am I?

Now in goblin territory, he'd slowly push onward, much more alert than he was earlier.
Sword raised, his eyes would glance around for any ambush.
(I feel like if my sword become any lighter I could wield it with one hand.)
That'd be cool. Dual wielding. There's so many animes and games where it's a thing. Protagonists often dual wield. (Not that I'm one, I'll probably die in some random ditch somewhere).
He laughes at the thought, anxious.

A quiet sound at the distance would alert him. Three of them walking around. One of them with a stick and a nail through it, one with a handmade bow and one with a woodcutter axe.
(Okay. I'll take them.)

He'd begin charging them, rushing their way. It would take little for the goblins to notice him, screaming in fear. One of them would grab their bow, loading it with an arrow. Saito would immediately stop, unsure of how quick that's gonna fly. Without delay, the goblin fires. It comes at him pretty fast, but nothing impressive. Saito ducks beneath it and runs up to it. The other two goblins raises their weapons to protect the archer, striking at him once close enough. Close up, Saito would feint his approach, moving back. The goblin holding the axe misses, shoving it into the floor. The second one doesn't seem to fall for it and follows up, striking at his legs. His first reflex is to jump above it, raising his sword, striking it down at his head, slicing the goblin in half vertically.
The remaining two goblins immediately flee upon seeing their buddy killed. Stunned, Saito stands there, looking at them run away.
(Huh? People have died from those.)

(Are they running to tell their king? I'm not ready for that one. Better not stay longer).

Rather than pushing his luck, he'd turn around, walking away. Goblins have various roles. Those are usually tasked with collecting anything they find. Food, weapons, items. Then there's the warriors and finally, the King itself. Maybe they look so weak to him because he's higher level? Maybe if he waits he'll fight warriors instead?
(I reallyyyyy need that experience though..)

He'd sigh. Better hide and wait to see if he can fight warriors instead. The young man would walk a little further and hide behind a tree, waiting to see what the reinforcements would be. All it takes is 5 minutes until a small group of warriors appears. 5 of them, holding different weapons and horrible handmade armour.
(I could take one. But five? That's a bit much for me.)

He'd wait. The warriors would look around, move around and search around, fortunately without noticing him. Soon enough, two of them would head back as three of them begins to move onward.
(Oh, I can take that. Maybe. I hope those aren't my final words.)

As soon as the goblin get closer, within range, Saito would slowly circle the tree to avoid detection, hoping to backstab them. The goblins immediately stop, speaking loudly, immediately running toward the tree. (They do have sharp hearing..)

His attempt to backstab them failed, he'd back up as they circle the tree, trying to surround him.
The one on his right would reach him first, swinging horizontally at his chest.
Without fault, Saito blocks that strike holding his sword of both hands, the impact feeling heavy on his hands, creating a shockwave felt up his arms. He pushes back the sword and goes to counter, but before he has time to do so, a second one flanks him, striking at his shoulder with a mace. He turns sideways and leaps back to dodge it. With this swift movement, the mace misses him.

(Okay. This sucks. How am I suppose to hit one if they're going to full up like that? Should I use my gem?)

The third goblin swings horizontally at him, wielding a hoe. The protagonist is thus forced to bend down beneath the scythe to dodge the strike. He steps further back. (No, I can't waste that. Compared to my next battles, this one shouldn't be hard.)

While backing him, he quickly tries to think of a solution. He can't take the right one down. The middle would would get him flanked. The hoe isn't a good close quarter weapon. He needs to take that one down first. Okay.

He'd feint going to the left, but then rush toward his left, avoiding a second hit from the mace, closing the distance with the third goblin. Both of his hands on the rod, the goblin tries to swing it down, which Saito doesn't bother dodging. The rod hits him, but not the blade.
"Ow."
He releases one hand from his sword, his left hand quickly reaching down for his dagger.
As a response to his assault, the goblin tries to bite him.
Immediately scared, Saito reacts in time and leans back, avoiding it. This scare immediately triggers a burst of adrenaline. Reproducing the way he killed the guards earlier, he swings it up at his exposed neck, deeply cutting into it. He then jumps to the left to get away from the one wielding the sword.

The goblin screams in agony, darkened blood leaking from his throat. He'd fall to the floor in a loud stump. (Cool, one down.)

Enraged by the fall of one of their comrades, the remaining two scream in a fit of rage, rushing him with renewed vigor. Yet another strike from the mace. Saito tries to block it, but the impact is harder than anticipated, pushing his sword aside, hitting his shoulder. He clench his teeth, letting go of a moan. Rather than moving away, he instead goes back in, circling around him away from the sword wielding, swinging his dagger sideways, lunging it into the neck, piercing through it. He then moves away as he falls to the floor.

(My shoulder feels kinda numb.)

The third goblin, in an absolute fury, runs at him, rushing him with everything he's got.
His mind goes back to the gem, but pushes the thought away. Not now.
Within a second, the third goblin closes the gap, swinging horizontally with great strength.
To take it, Saito reverses his grip, the blade downward toward the strike, his left arm right behind. His right foot slides over. As expected, the hit makes him stumble, sending a solid shockwave through both of his arms. The man then goes for his dagger finish, but in a raging fit, the goblin leans in, headbutting him. A severe pain courses from his head down to his body, shocking him.
Saito moans in pain and steps back. The goblin keeps on going, relentless, striking him of his free hand. He'd raise his arm, blocking the hit of his forearm, leaving a bruise.
(This goblin is crazy!)

Without thinking much, Saito would counter with a headbutt of his own, stunning the goblin in return. With a powerful headache, he manages to instead stab the goblin's right arm, preventing him from using the sword as he wishes. Using this slight window of opportunity, raising his sword of both hands, with the gained strength through levels, he manages to lift his sword and strike it down in a fast, quick and efficient manner, beheading the last goblin. His body falls down to the floor in a loud noise. Out of breath, Saito digs his sword into the ground, using it to hold himself.

"Okay... This was way more than I thought it'd be."

Watching things from a screen makes thing look a lot easier than they actually are.
He'd lean down, grabbing his dagger back, immediately deciding to leave the goblin territory.
"I guess I'll head town to rest."

As he begins heading back, a familiar sound notifies him. He looks down.
"Leveled up! You are now level 8"
You know what? Yeah, they were pretty strong. I think that was very much worth it.
(I genuinely could've died here. I'll wait until my shoulder and arm stop being sore and I'll go at it again. I'm just two level short magic.)

He'd slowly walk back for roughly 30 mins, and then sits beside a tree, feeling exhausted. He'd look up the sky, the sun now very slowly starting to go down.
(Man.. Days here feel so slow. I'll nap for a while.. Then make way for that village.)
