Chapter 7:

Preparations

Death Game. I'm not the protagonist, am I?

Night fell. The sound of owls echoes from the woods. Now sitting at the dinner table with Trevor's family, he indulges in the food they're offering him, eating it up like it's nothing. Training really digs you an appetite.

"Don't worry, we have more after." Says the mother.

Embarrassed, he nods and slows down. He's been raised better than to show poor manners.
"Thank you."

Trevor looks up at him, curious.
"SO! How'd that training go?"

"I feel a lot more confident holding a sword, it was really worth it."

"Good! I like to hear that. So, what are you going to do after your week is up? Go home?"

..That never crossed his mind. Realistically, he won't live past the first week. But even if he does, it's nothing more than a "checkpoint". He can't go home anymore.
I have no idea what to do after that point. Is there anything he should be doing? Is god going to throw harder challenges at him for the sake of entertainment? There's no answer to this and no point in thinking about it for now.

"I can't go home anymore."
"Oh um. I'm sorry to hear, I didn't mean to push onto something sensitive."
"Don't worry it's okay."

His heart begins to hurt. It hurts. To think about home. Your family. Your friends. That so eagerly, without doubt, wait for you to come back home. They're probably watching him even now. To never be able to tell them goodbye is probably the worst part of it.

Noticing Saito's difficult expression, the man smiles in an attempt to reassure him.
"You know, I've never offered this before but, you seem like a hard working fellow. We'd love to have you around if you decided to stay."

Another wave of pain, this one harder to swallow than the first. You're offering someone who has nothing left something to cherish. His throat tenses up, thinking of a way to respond. He takes a moment, then opens his mouth to spit out a reply, but Trevor speaks once more.

"I've been looking for someone to take care of Chloe if you're interested."
"DAD!" Screams the young woman.

His profound sadness and pain rapidly gets replaced with surprise and embarrassment.
(HUH?)

IS THIS HOW THEY DO THINGS HERE?
"I-Uh, Im.."

HOW DO I RESPOND TO THAT?
His face quickly turns red.
She moves her blond hair in front of her blue eyes, trying to hide herself.

The man laughs, visibly amused.
"Dear, please don't tease them too much."
"Okay, okay."

Oh man. Now this is awkward.
The rest of the dinner goes in complete silence. Both Chloe and Saito avoiding each other's gaze.

The rest of the night goes quietly. Eventually, everyone goes to bed. Now comfortable seated beneath the sheets of his bed, he stares at the roof. It's difficult to think about a specific thing, his mind racing across so many different thoughts. Home, this world, his future. Am I doing all of this just to die in a ditch? He sighs and turns sideways, closing his eyes, trying to force himself to sleep.
It takes him a while but he ultimately manages to sleep, his body tired from working out all day.

He blinks, waking up. Sun rays coming from the window are now hurting his eyes, waking him up.
Saito turns around away from the light, kind of upset. He was having a good dream. He stretches and promptly gets up, heading out of the room. The mother seems already up, preparing food.
The sound of hammering can be heard outside. The walls of this home are fairly thick so the sound is pretty much muffled.
(Makes sense. I'd assume hearing that sound all day while drive anyone crazy otherwise).

"Goodmorning ma'am."
"Goodmorning! Dinner will be ready soon. He's been up all night trying to finish your armour."
"All night?? He didn't have to go that far."
"It's okay, that's just how he is. It's his way of thanking you."

I do suppose that's convenient. I'll be able to go fight the goblins today.
"I'll go see him then."

The moment he opens the door, the sounds come obnoxiously loud, blowing his ears.
He makes a face, walking toward the sound. On the side of the house is the blacksmith equipment. Trevor seems very much concentrated on finishing the armour. From what he can see, it looks almost done. He comes closer, just waiting it out. Couple minutes passes and he stops, his work finally completed. He sighs and turns around, noticing Saito waiting there.

"Oh, have you been there a while?"
"No, I just got here."

The man smiles.
"I wanted to finish it before you woke up, but here it is."

Looking over, the armour is a chain mail with shoulder plates. There's a couple leather strips going around the body to cover his most vital area, the heart. The pants are made of leader, with small metal places around the thighs and down the legs. For the fantasy standard, it looks like a starter kit armour. For his world, it doesn't look that good. But it looks calculated and efficient. This is what he needed.

"It looks amazing, that's exactly what I needed. Thank you so much."

Sweating, with the biggest smile he's seen from him, the blacksmith approaches him and slaps his shoulder with compassion, staggering him a little.
"No problem!"
 "Dinner's ready!"

Without any further word, the husband quickly rushes to the dinning table. Yeah, after all that work he's probably starving. Smiling in return, Saito follows him, joining them for breakfast.
Today's menu, a classic that reminds him of home. Bread and eggs with juice on the side.
After a filling breakfast, he thanks them and heads to his room to fit his armour. He moves his body a little, looking down at himself.
(It's not in the way nor does it slow me down. This is about the best I could've asked for.)
He goes and fetches his sword, adjusting it his belt, discarding his old one.
Dual wielding could be cool. But realistically, one sword is optimal.

He then heads outside. The sky seems cloudy. Hopefully it doesn't rain today.

"Are you going out?" Says a familiar voice.
He turns around, Chloe now standing in front of him.

"Yeah. I'm going to hunt."
"Are you getting in more fights" She asks, worried.
He nods.

"Why are you fighting?"
He looks up for a moment. Saying he's fighting for his people would probably sound weird since he's nowhere close to his hometown.

"A lot of people has been dying here. To bandits, to goblins, to the werewolf and whatever else comes after. I want this place to be safer."
She nods, accepting the explanation.

"Be safe and come back okay?"
Her expression looks sad. I can't blame her. She just wants to make friends that won't die within a couple days of meeting them.

"Yeah, I got this."
She nods and he turns around, heading back toward the woods.
Armour, check. Weapon, check. Rations, I got two left. Water check, I refilled it this morning. Potion check.

(Yep, I'm ready.)
