Chapter 8:

The hunt

Death Game. I'm not the protagonist, am I?

After a somewhat long walk, he reaches border of the goblin's territory.
From here on out, he'll be fighting a lot. His hopes is to gain a couple levels for today. The more the merrier. Much less anxious than the first time he came around, he confidently walks forward, aware of his surroundings. Fighting them in their lair would get him surrounded and killed. No matter how strong someone is, there's no way to fend off attacks from a massive crowd of goblins. Better kill looters and warriors until the big one is lured out. After walking into the territory for few minutes, his attention is dragged to a small pond with 5 smaller goblins throwing rocks into it, simply having fun. (Feels awful to kill them.). He walks up to them. They don't seem to notice him at all. Only once he directly stand behind them does one of them notice, turning around, surprised. The goblin screams and they all jumpscare, noticing him as well. Their immediate reaction is to attack. However, now much stronger than he was, it doesn't take much for Saito to dispatch them with ease, outspeeding and overpowered them. Following the teachings bestowed upon him the day before, he swiftly swings down and sideways in sharp moments, their corpse falling to the floor, giving him little exp. Walking a little further, he notices more of the small ones travelling around, looking for food.

"Hey!"

The goblin's attention swaps to him. They seem to hesitate, but seeing the blood on his sword, they decide to run back for reinforcements.
(Good, I'll get the stronger ones now.)

Sure enough, it doesn't take long. There's perhaps seven of them this one, one of which is holding a bow. Without delay, it pulls an arrow and shoots it at the invader. Saito leans sideway, dodging it efficiently. (That looked kind of slow. Levels probably also affect how I perceive things.)

The warriors rush at him, spreading out to surround him better. Rather than backing up, this time confident, he goes onward. (Probably a good time to try magic.)

"Strengthen."

He reaches the first one. The goblin goes to lunge at him, but the survivor swings much faster, cutting him in half. He then rapidly turns to his right, parrying a second one with an axe, pushing back and immediately counters, beheading him. He jump sideways, avoiding a strike. His glances at the archer that's about to fire another one. He shoots, but misses, Saito moving out of the way.
He then spins around and dash forward, bypassing another one on his way to swing down at him with a large hammer, cutting him in half. That's three down already, four to go.

(You know, this is almost fun. Would be fun if I wasn't actually killing them. That's the horrible part.)

One of the goblins, in a fit of rage, throws his javelin at him. Surprised, Saito raises his sword, deflecting it. He then bursts forward, lunging his sword into his chest. Immediately flanked, Saito headbutts his aggressor and pulls the sword out of the goblin's body, shoving it back into this new one. Another arrow comes his way. He bends down a little, using the body as a shield. The remaining warrior screams, enraged, rushing him. The hero turns to face him as the goblin strikes horizontally. Our protagonist swings his sword against the goblin's sword, blocking it.
(Impact)

The spell going off, a small explosion with a short delay goes off against the goblin's sword, pushing it back, making it flinch. Given this golden opportunity, Saito misses no time and swings his sword downward, slashing through its head. The last goblin standing, the archer, turns tails and begins to flee.
(Go on. Fetch me your King.)

He sighs, pulling his sword out. He then swings it in an attempt to get rid of the excess blood.
A notification goes off as he does. "Level up! You are now level 15. You may now create a new spell!"

He smiles. What new spell could he make?
What about something to boost his speed and agility?
Hmm.  You know how all these anime characters have these cool transformations that make them stronger? Why can't he make himself one? What should it look like? Something like a beast would be cool.  Imagine if he could make claws out of mana. That's badass. Yep, let's go with that. If he were to combine that with his physical enhancement, could be amazing.

"Attack Creation and Physical Reinforcement. Covers my body with mana, giving it the shape of a panther. Provides mana claws and boosts my agility and movement ability, giving me the ability to leap. Name: Panther form."

His spell selection goes away. The spell has been created. Is there any limits to what kinda spell he can do? Like if he vocally says he wants his spell to be a nuke and blow up everything, realistically it wouldn't work. The past guy tried that. Has to be something that makes sense with your current level. But like. That's difficult to gauge. I'll try aiming for something bigger next time.

He keeps walking onward, looking around. Am I getting more warriors or am I getting the big one?
A sound echoes. The ground lightly trembles. The sound of footsteps at the distance echoes his way. The ground begins to tremble more. The big one it is. Anxiety begins to build up again. Is he strong enough yet for that one? At worst he does have a healing potion. It's not as strong as the other one, it won't regenerate a limb. But it could maybe restore a broken bone or a bruise.

Through the trees at the distance, a large figure appears. Perhaps three to four times his size and much bigger, holding a massive hardened wooden club in its hand. Seeing it through a screen is one thing, but meeting it in person is something else. His heart begins beating. The Goblin King, now seeing him from the distance, roars at him in anger. The sound generated could make a child deaf, echoing through a colossal radius. This is it. I don't have to hold back.

His body begins to glow, activating both his panther form and his physical reinforcements.
"I'm ready."

As if responding to his words, the giant goblin picks up a large boulder beside a tree and chucks it with great velocity at the hero. He moves out of the way ahead of time, but it barely took a second before it reached where he previously was standing. The boulder bounces off and crashes into a large tree, breaking it in half. The tree falls off to the floor, broken.
(Holy crap I can't get hit.)

This is the kind of thing that makes a grown up run away. That's terrifying.
Who's dumb enough to try and challenge this thing?
(Me, apparently.)

Seeing the rock missed its target, the King instead grabs a smaller tree, pulling it from the earth it grew from, the roots snapping from the pressure pulling it up in a shower of loud noises. Saito moves behind a couple trees as the giant throws it as well. The tree doesn't seem to slow down too much with the obstacles, but eventually breaks down apart before reaching him.
(Is he going to just keep throwing things until it works out? It's not that smart.)

Saito leans forward and leaps ahead. He almost trips up, his speed much rather than he had anticipated. He manages to recover from his staggered stance and closes the distance within few seconds as the beast picks yet another rock. Noticing him close by, he swings the rock down at him. Right before he does, the survivor leaps away, jumping up a tree as the rock slams where he was previously standing, digging itself in the ground, destroying the terrain. His gaze moves to Saito's new position as the latter leaps once more directly at him. The giant, however, swings a lot faster than anticipated, catching up to his speed.
(IMPACT).

Using his claws, he swings at the mace, creating an explosion of mana from his claws. The impact is huge, but ultimately, there is no beating the King in a direct contest of strength. His claw gets pushed aside and the club its his flank, flinging him over a great deal of distance. He flips over the floor a couple, his head and body banging the floor beneath him. He digs his claws in the floor, stopping himself. He coughs, that was actually harsh. The aura surrounding him softened the impact. Striking the club directly with an explosion also lowered the force of the impact. He's okay. He can keep going. He raises his eyes at the goblin, only to see yet another tree flying his way. He jumps aside as the trunk folds upon itself, snapping from the tremendous impact upon landing.
The black haired fighter runs back at his opponent, zigzagging between trees to discourage further projectiles. But rather than throwing more things at him, the giant goes into a rampage, running straight at him through the trees in the way, demolishing everything inbetween. Trees collapse and fall to the floor under the strength and weight of this great foe. As soon as the distance is closed, of one rapid, powerful strike, the giant swings down his club. Saito jumps sideways, barely avoiding an attack that could've instantly killed him. He then leaps up, bypassing the beast, swinging at its neck. The sword slices through, making it bleed black blood. But the injury wasn't deep enough. Now mid-air, the creature turns around and grabs his leg before the young man can react. It then swings and launches him at a tree with great velocity. His body goes through the tree, breaking through it, sending him flying much further. Gasping for air, he struggles with this one.
(I feel like I broke something in my back).
He barely managed to injure it. Yet he's already almost out of battle.
That was to be expected. This is one of the most powerful beings around here.

(Damn it, I have to use it already.)
He pulls the healing potion from his bag, drinking it.
A warmth fills him. It doesn't take long to act. The pain in his back, the soreness from the impact and part of his fatigue goes away. He quickly stands up to see the King walk his way. Seeing him stand up, the giant roars at him, throwing a tantrum.

"Yeah, you've probably never seen someone live this long fighting you huh?"

Now. How do I beat this thing. The neck can work but it's thick and I've seen this thing headbutt a rock and break before in a past stream. Piercing its head is probably not possible. The eye? If the sword can reach deep enough the eye, it could reach the brain. I need to leap up again.
The goblin boss tosses the last tree inbetween them aside, breathing heavily.

(..Is it getting tired?)
It wasn't breathing this heavily earlier. Since its fights don't last long, he probably doesn't have good endurance. That would make so much sense.
Rather than swinging down it's mace, the monster tries to catch him, but Saito bounces back, avoiding it. Upset, it swings its club sideways. Saito leaps back further, avoiding it once again.
Upset, the giant chases him.

(His movements are a lot slower than they were. It's genuinely running out of stamina)
Despite that, it doesn't mean he can underestimate him. Goblins are known to get much stronger whenever their anger spikes. A single moment could lead to his head getting crushed in.

Saito walks back, just far enough to stay out of reach from his hand but close enough to his club.
(Do it. Swing it down. You know you want to.)

As if following his thoughts, the creature raises his club, swinging it down.
Reacting ahead of time, Saito dodges it by jumping sideways. He then quickly gets closer and leaps up, sword at hand, aiming for the eye. The King moves his hand in the way. The sword pierces through his hand into the eye, but doesn't reach deep enough as his assault got interrupted.
It screams in agony, dropping the club, intending to crush him with both its hands.
Saito attempts at pushing it further in, he fails to. Now scared for his life, in a moment of inspiration, he thinks of spells and screams as loud as he can.

"IMPACT!"

An explosion goes off from the tip of his sword inside the enemy's body. The eyes blows out of its socket, the explosion frying the small brain it had. The giant's body loses its footing, falling forward, crashing down the floor, crushing Saito underneath.

"AHHH."
That actually hurts. But I've done it. I'VE DONE IT. I'VE KILLED ANOTHER BIG ONE.
Struggling to get out from beneath its body, hes manages, with great effort, to finally pull himself down. He laughes, both from satisfaction and stress. He almost died, again.
"I sure love gambling with my life."

A notification goes off. "Leveled up! You are now level 18. You can now create a new spell"
That's a pretty good level.
Witnessing the body of the monstrosity, his body gets overwhelmed with  exhaustion. He feels dizzy. His body feels heavy. Feels like he might pass out.
(I got too much adrenaline from this.)

He quickly walks away, trying to find a spot to rest. There's no real good spot, but once he thinks he's far enough, he goes to lean against a tree but his legs drop on him. He drops to the floor, his eyes heavy. He passes out from low blood pressure, induced from the adrenaline he got from this battle.
