Chapter 13:
Neo/Re: Epic − New and Returning Legends of Another World: Volume 1
The boy with black and white hair slowly came to his senses. As he came to, he tried to push himself up off the bed that he was laying down on. As he tried to push himself to sit up, he felt a sharp pain from his chest as he fell back down onto the bed, hitting his head on the back of the bedframe before landing on the pillow.
"Owww," he said as he tried to bring his arm up to rub the back of his head. As he pulled his arm up, he felt another pain as he moved it close to his head. He immediately brought his arm back down next to his torso before sharply inhaling through his teeth.
"Gah," he managed to say before he took a look around his surroundings. It looked like he was inside of a small, wooden cabin. He looked outside the windows and saw nothing but trees. He tried to remember how he had gotten there or why he suddenly felt pain throughout so much of his body.
As he tried to look down at his body to no avail, he heard someone walk towards him. He turned his head to see a girl with long, unkempt hair dressed in a simple shirt and overall dress walk up to the bed.
"What happened?" she asked him as she helped him sit up against the back of the bed frame.
The boy clenched his teeth before he answered,
"I tried sitting up, but it hurt a lot. And then I hit my head on the bedframe as I fell back down."
The girl sighed as she pulled up a stool to sit next to the bed.
"Well of course it would hurt," she explained, "you were barely alive when I found you. You had terrible injuries all over you."
The boy looked down and saw that his torso and arms were almost entirely covered in bandages, some of them a reddish shade of brown, no doubt his own blood. He tried to remember what had happened to him that could had caused him such injury, but couldn't remember anything before he had woken up.
"What happened to me," he asked, as he felt the bandages on his head.
"No clue," the girl answered while grabbing another pillow to put behind his head, "I was just walking around the forest gathering wood when I saw you bleeding out on the ground. It looked like you had taken a pretty hard fall on your head, but a lot of your injuries were far to severe and specific to have come from a fall. They looked more like you had been mauled by a monster."
He kept trying to remember something, anything before he noticed that some of strands of his black hair poking down from past the bandages, were white at the edges.
"Huh," he said as he pulled down more of his hair to see more, to which he found that most of them were white at the ends.
"I know. I've never seen someone with your combination of hair colors before," explained the girl, "but then again, I was much more concerned with trying to keep you alive. You were out for almost four days and nights."
Shirou used his hands to push his hair back. As he turned to thank the girl for nursing him back to health, he noticed something strange about her. While she appeared to be a normal human at first glance, he spotted that her ears had slightly pointed ends.
"Umm," he started to ask, "Sorry but, what are you?"
The girl looked at him for a second before scoffing.
"Unbelievable," she remarked, "I bring you into my home and take care of you instead of leaving you where I found you to die, and the first thing you ask me when you regain consciousness is what I am?"
The boy closed his eyes and groaned, only realizing what he had actually said after her very reasonable response. Apparently, he was not yet back to thinking clearly.
"I'm so sorry," he apologized, "You're right. I haven't even asked you what your name is."
The girl continued to scowl for a second before eventually softening her expression.
"It's alright," she replied, "I'd be surprised if you weren't a bit slow after a head injury like that. I'm Vivien, and you are?"
The boy paused for a bit as he tried to recall on a name of any kind.
"Shiro, I think?" he answered.
"Huh," Vivien reacted, "I suppose your not from around here, are you Shiro?"
"I, uh..." he said while turning his head to look around before stopping to look back at Vivien, "I can't remember."
As the realization set in he started to hyperventilate, breathing faster and faster,
"Woah, hold on," Vivien said as she tried to comfort Shiro, "It's okay. Everything's gonna be okay, You're safe here. Calm down and take deep slow breaths, like this." Vivien took long, slow breaths while holding onto Shiro's shoulder's. Slowly, he started to slow down as she matches her pace.
"Okay," she said as she stopped, "Now that your fine, what were you saying?"
A now more calm Shiro leaned back against the pillows on the back of the bedframe as he turned away form her and stared blankly at the ceiling.
"I can't remember where I'm from," he replied, "I can't remember anything."
Vivien paused for a second, her face showing clear worry and concern, before she helped Shiro lie back down on the bed with as little pain as possible.
"Try to go back to sleep," she told him as she stood up, "Maybe it'll come back to you after you rest more." She picked up the stool she was sitting on and started to walk away before turning her head back to him,
"You'll be fine. Call for me if you need anything else."
Shiro nodded to her before she walked into another room. He closed his eyes as he tried to ignore the pain and fall asleep. But even though he could ignore the pain a bit, he couldn't ignore the now massive questions now in his head,
Where did he come from? Why had he been so injured before Vivien found him. Who was he?
