Chapter 30:

Memories

Death Game. I'm not the protagonist, am I?

Now free to travel back toward Glowvia, they leave the castle behind.
Jeffrey: "I've never met more obnoxious people in my life."
Saito: "Me neither."

Usually, whenever they travel, they start up conversations about anything at all to fill the void.
But right now? They're all tired from hearing voices. The good old quiet is the biggest comfort he could've asked for. The whole day passes, quiet. Nobody feels like talking. During the second day, they pass by that wagon again. The party looks over at it. It looks in good condition.

Saito: "I feel like it'd be a waste to leave it there."
Jeffrey: "I don't think our horse can pull two wagons at once. It'll be too heavy."
Sera: "I don't sense anyone else. It likely belonged to the bandits to bait people."

Since Elora can't carry a second horse, Saito would have to push the wagon for two entire days to bring it to the village. They'd be happy to receive such gift, but he doesn't have that level of patience nor endurance.

Saito: "We can hide it in the woods and have villagers come pick it up another day."
Borghild: "That's about the best we can do. Or dismantle it. Spare wheels and planks would never hurt. That cloth would be nice too if ours break."

You know what, I like the sound of that a lot more. That's a smart thought.
Saito: "You're right, let's do that. Dismantle this thing."
Borghild: "Aye Captain."

The few of them would take half a hour to dismantle all the good parts, leaving the rest behind. Storing the extra supplies inside their wagon, they then resume their travels.
Saito: "This is taking too much space."
Sera: "Wagons have a storage space beneath the floor"

She walks over, opening a small trap door.
(I would've never guessed.)

Once everything moved over, he sits down, relaxing.
Sera: "You're a champion right? What pushed you to join the military?"
Saito: "I wanted to get stronger and learn more about this world."
Sera: "This world?"
Saito: "I come from a different world."
Sera: "Ohhh?"

She stares at him, interested. She clearly wants to know more.
Saito: "What do you want to know?"
Sera: "How's life over there?"
Saito: "Depends where you live. In some kingdoms, life is good. In some others, life is tolerable."
Sera: "Do they also have a long history of conflicts?"
Saito: "They do. I think that's just life."
Borghild: "What about your alcohol?"
Saito: "There's a massive amount of variety. I can't tell you a number, but above 10000 probably."

Borghild rubs his hands like he's about to dig in.
"Bring me over there someday. I'll try them all."
Saito: "If I ever can, sure I wouldn't mind. But people wouldn't leave you alone."
Borghild: "I'm fine with the girls."

The leader rubs his forehead. Of course you'd be fine with them.
Saito: "But yeah, there's no magic there. The technology is a lot more advanced, to a point where even if I explained some of it to you, you probably wouldn't understand."
Sera: "That sounds fascinating. How did you get transported here."

Saito takes a moment to answer. Since they've been travelling a bit now, they likely won't drop him just because they don't believe his words.

Saito: "People from my world kept randomly being picked one by one to come here. For the sake of entertaining a higher being. They were dropped into impossible odds. Hundreds died."

Sera: "I... I'm sorry."
Borghild: "So that's what you meant before when you talked about having to go through a lot."
Saito: "Yeah."
Sera: "What higher being are you talking about?"
Saito: "The god of creation."

Borghild's face frowns. He doesn't think Saito would be lying to him, but that's a difficult pill to swallow. Jeffrey has a similar expression. Sera seems sad for him, but she doesn't have the same sense of disbelief the other two have. As if it doesn't affect her.
Sera: "So that's your enemy?"
Saito: "Mhm. I want to kill god."
Jeffrey: "HOLD ON! You don't want to fight a kingdom but you want to fight god? What's wrong with you?"
Borghild: "He killed a dragon. Why not a god next?"
Jeffrey. "NOO! DON'T ENCOURAGE HIM!"

They laughed, their discussion going on as they travel onward, driving Jeffrey crazy.
(If this keeps up I'm going to start balding.)

The second day passed without any incident.
At sunrise, they resume their travels on the third day. Soon, he'll reach the ruins. Memories come rushing in. He doesn't remember details, but he remembers how intense it was. How he died giving the finishing blow to a foe that was that much stronger than him. And then how he fought God's subordinate the moment he came back. A lot of people died that way. But it could've been worse. He heard about Trevor almost getting killed. He would've felt awful.

Looking out the window out of boredom, he looks out for animals or creatures. His sharp eyes does find one. A warrior goblin has spotted his wagon.
(Oh. Is there a new king here? Did they repopulate?)

Rather than approaching or scouting, the goblin quickly runs away, as if fleeing.
It's been 2 years since then. I don't think they'd be scared him. Why was the goblin so scared?
Was there another monster nearby?
Saito: "Sera, do you detect anything unusual right now?"

She seems to cast a spell, focusing for a moment.
Sera: "There's something running away from us and a couple birds. But I don't feel anything else."
How weird.

Within a few hours, they finally reach the ruins.
After 2 years, there's barely any building standing left. His fight with the assassin took down most of them somehow. The keep is still up, with one of its wall collapsed upon itself, a crater on the ground that time never managed to refill.

Borghild: "That's not your hometown, is it?"
Saito: "No, this is some abandoned village. We're much closer to the border than this."
Borghild: "Good, had me worried for you."
Saito: "Thanks."

Passing through, there really is nothing but dust here. With time, nature has began taking over the ruins. Grass growing through the shattered street, vines stretching up the remaining walls. Plants of various kind growing at different locations. Life is a cycle.

He fidgets on his bench, excited.
He'll finally see Chloe again.
