Chapter 31:
Death Game. I'm not the protagonist, am I?
Like a kid going to an attraction park, Saito couldn't stop fidgeting on his seat, excited, looking out the window quite a lot, hoping to see villagers.
Borghild: "Are you good? You're tweaking."
Saito: "Oh, sorry. I just missed them."
Borghild: "If you miss them that much, get out and run into the arms."
Now shy, he leans back against his seat, looking away, his cheeks turning red.
Sera laughed, amused with the hero's behaviour.
Sera: "You can fault him. He's happy to see his family."
Borghild: "Ehh. I don't know. I just can't relate."
Sera: "Do you have no one?"
Borghild: "No. The ones I had rejected me"
His tone sounds cold and distant.
Sera: "I see.. I'm sorry to hear."
He makes a groan as a response.
Oh. He should've brought Krist with him. I forgot about that.
(I think his service ends in a year. It'll be fine._
Then wagon changes of direction, then stops. They've reached the village. Seito opens the door, coming out. His eyes wander toward Trevor's house. The village haven't changed much at all in the past two years. Two new houses were built for new villagers and Glowvia was extended to allow farms to be added, granting them more food every summer. Otherwise, they've been taking care of what they had with great attention. This place showed no sign of aging.
His mind clear and relaxed, the hero slowly made his way toward his home.
He knocks and waits for a moment, hoping for an answer.
Via: "Hold on!"
A little while passes. Her small figure appears behind the new slightly transparent door as she push it open. Pleasantly surprised, a gentle smile draws itself over her lips.
"Welcome back Saito."
"I'm back."
Via: "Come in"
She steps aside, allowing him to come inside. The place is quiet but clean. She's been taking care of this place as always. He looks around, then inquires.
"Where's Trevor and Chloe?"
Via: "They left a while ago to fetch us apples. They should be back shortly."
Saito: "Oh sweet. Hopefully my new friends here don't make too much of a ruckus."
Via: "You've brought friends?"
Saito: "Sorta. I've been building a party. You know, like adventurers normally do?"
Via: "Ohh! That sounds wonderful. Is that why it took you so long to visit?"
Uh oh. Here it comes.
Via: "Chloe really missed you."
Saito: "I missed her a lot too."
Without a noise, with graceful moments, she'd walk back toward her kitchen, her hand picking up a spoon on the counter. "You know what it means.. Right?"
Saito: "Of course! It means.. We'll spend a lot of wonderful time, pain free, with lot of smiles and laughs?" He tries, finger up, looking away.
Via: "Hmm. Maybe. Well, if you're going to stay around longer, maybe I won't need this."
Saito: "Yeah, I think you won't."
Now sitting on a tree, Sera leans sideways, kinda listening into Saito's conversation.
Sera: "Saito is getting threatened by a spoon?"
Borghild: "Deadly indeed."
Even more confused, Jeff raises his arms.
(He said something about a spoon before. I guess he wasn't kidding.)
For some reason, Saito would fight any and all creatures, even a dragon. But that spoon still hurts. The strength of a mom that cares for her daughter is far more threatening.
Via: "Maybe you'd be willing to help us turn these apples into pies?"
Saito: "Sure."
He'd love to stay here a couple days. But he's not too sure on how to justify it to his party.
If he says it's a break for them, maybe that'll work out.
Via: "Will your friends will join us for it?"
Saito: "I can ask them. I've been worried about it, but has Vestris made any move to invade?"
Her face widens for a moment. That's a pretty big thing to say.
"No, they haven't acted any different than they have been in the past years. Should we be worried?"
Saito: "I'm not sure, I'm hearing that they might be pushing to gain more territory. Since this village is so close to them, I'm afraid for your safety. I could offer you refuge closer to Glarion's capital."
Via: "That's a really kind offer, but my husband will want the final word on this."
(I really hope I can convince him.)
Via: "Are you going to offer the same to the entire village?"
Saito: "I'd love if everyone could move, but I can't offer refuge to everyone. I don't have any home or piece of land on my own to offer."
Via: "In that case.. Convincing Trevor would be difficult. He's taken a leader attitude toward this village."
That's understandable. The protagonist also cares about everyone here, Trevor isn't wrong to want to protect them. But it does make his task significantly harder.
Saito: "I'll go talk to my party, I'll be back shortly."
Via: "Sure, take your time."
He heads out, walking back. Their eyes turn to him, and his turns to Sera.
She smiles in return. She heard everything again huh?
Borghild: "So boss, what's the plan?"
Saito: "We'll stay here for a couple days. Take this as vacation or as guarding duty, whether you prefer. I'll try to convince them to move closer to safety. If something does happen, we're already here so I feel a lot better."
Jeffrey: "So it's a vacation for you and guarding duty for us?"
There's nothing he can reply to that. It is his vacation.
Jeffrey: "I'm kidding, go have fun. I know you've been meaning to come around since a while."
Borghild: "Anything to do here?"
Saito: "I don't know. There is to be a goblin lair and bandits two years ago, but both has been dismissed.
Borghild: "Sounds boring. I'll take your best ale then."
Saito: "I'll try to see what they have, but this village isn't rich. I don't think you can drink as much as you want to."
He crosses his arms, disappointed.
Borghild: "I would've filled our wagon with wine had I known that."
They all smile. He's acting like a pouting child.
Saito: "Actually Sera, I have something for you to do."
Sera: "Hm?"
Saito: "You're good at eavesdropping. Think you can listen to Vestris's guards and tell me if you hear anything interesting?"
Sera: "Me? Good at listening in on conversations? I don't know what you mean but sure, I can try."
Jeff stares at her with a long face. (Liar. At this point it's your entire thing.)
She hops off her tree on a graceful fall.
"I'll see you guys later then."
They wave her off as she disappears in the village, heading toward the border.
Jeff: "I still don't trust you. She listens into everything."
Borghild: "She's probably still listening to you."
Jeff: "It's creepy stop that"
Saito: "She's equally valuable. It'd be a waste to just dismiss her because of suspicions."
Jeff: "I know..."
Noticing movement, our hero looks at the distance. Trevor and Chloe now standing by the entrance of their home. It doesn't take much for them to notice the horse and the wagon alongside the three of them. Trevor waves at them. Chloe quickly puts down the apples, running this way. His heart fluctuating with joy, Saito runs toward her. Finally reunited since a while, they hold themselves into a tight embrace, standing still for a while.
Jeffrey sighs.
Borghild: "No maidens?"
Jeff: "Please don't taunt me. It actually sucks."
Borghild: "Ehh trust me. You don't want that."
Jeff: "What's wrong with it? Look at that. They both look so happy."
Borghild: "It's the honeymoon phase I'm telling ya. They see each other once a month. Of course they'll miss each other. But the moment he settles down, they'll get sick of each other after a year. That's just how it goes."
Jeffrey: "I'd rather find out for myself."
The dwarf shrugs. (Don't say I didn't warn you.)
Their embrace followed by a kiss, Saito smiles, happy. His eyes lock gaze with his beloved for a moment.
Saito: "Let's go see your dad."
Chloe: "Sure. What about your friends?"
Saito: "They can join us in a bit."
He follows her back home. As she goes to pick up the apples, he does it just a little faster to stop her from having to carry it. She gives him a look, amused.
The hero walks in, leaving the basket of apples on the table.
Trevor: "How's my son-in-law?" Loudly speaks the man, visibly happy to see him.
He walks closer, giving his shoulder a friendly slap.
Saito: "Feeling a lot better right now. how're you?"
Trevor: "We've been having it good. Monsters are starting to settle around here. Some of us has been killing them for resources, selling those for money. I'd say this is the best we've been in a decade.
The father than gives him a look.
Trevor: "Looks like you got something to say."
Saito: "You know me too well."
Trevor: "Go on, spit it. What do you have to say?"
The moment didn't feel right. They looked so happy in this moment, dropping news that could change their way of life would completely destroy their mood. Saito glances at Via, hoping she stays silent.
Saito: "That can wait a bit. Right now I'm just happy to be here."
Trevor: "What about the people out there? Guests of yours?"
Saito: "Yeah, they're the people I travel with now. They're fun and quirky but they're easy to get along with.
Trevor: "Good to know you're well surrounded."
Via: "Dear, let's start making the food. That way we can have some for Saito's friends."
Trevor: "That works. Where are your friends staying?"
Saito: "Oh, they'll camp out."
Borghild has a pretty sturdy body and sleeps really hard. He could lay down in the middle of the road and fall sleep right there and then. Sera sleeps in a specific way. She doesn't sleep in beds, but rather, up trees at difficult to see areas. Like she's trying to completely hide herself before leaving herself valuable. Jeffrey would love having a bed.
Saito: "Maybe we can give a bed to Jeffrey."
Trevor: "Is that the brown haired one? I feel like I've seen that one before."
Saito "Yeah it's him. You probably have seen him."
He nods.
Saito: "I'll let you guys cook, I'll go spend some time with Chloe."
Trevor: "We'll tell you once we're ready."
Saito: "Sounds good."
